ASSBs based on sulfide solid electrolytes (SEs) have attracted much attention because of their high ionic conductivity and wide electrochemical windows of the sulfide SEs. Here, we study the electrochemical performance of ASSBs using composite electrodes prepared via two processes (simple mixture and solution processes) and varying the ionic conductor additive (80Li2S∙20P2S5 and argyrodite-type Li6PS5Cl). The composite electrodes consist of lithium-silicate-coated LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC), a sulfide SE, and carbon additives. The charge-transfer resistance at the interface of the solid electrolyte and NMC is the main parameter related to the ASSB’s status. This value decreases when the composite electrodes are prepared via a solution process. The lithium silicate coa...

It helps to maintain the skin's integrity and its barrier functions. Recently, magnetic masks that seek to improve the properties of the skin have been developed and have become a new cosmetic trend. However, scientific proof of their stated properties is lacking. To test whether iron oxide contained in a face mask with magnetic properties in an oily matrix with a freeze-dried aloe-vera base increases moisturization of the skin and improves skin barrier function. Formulations were prepared containing an oil phase (67.3% wt.) and a solid phase (32.7% wt.). The moisturizing properties of the mask were tested by measuring in vivo electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, contact angle, and visual appearance. Meanwhile, human panel tests were performed to evaluate the sensory perception of potential users. The moisturizing effect of the iron oxide mask is clearly superior to that of the other tested samples. Water retent...

Early recognition of HAND is crucial, and usually requires thorough neuropsychological testing. Neurological soft signs (NSS), i.e. minor motor and sensory changes, a common feature in severe psychiatric disorders, may facilitate early diagnosis. NSS were examined using the Heidelberg NSS Scale in 18 patients with ANI, 21 with MND, 28 HIV positive patients without HAND, and 39 healthy controls matched for age, gender, and education. The highest NSS scores were obtained in the MND patients (13.3 ± 10.0, p < 0.0001) followed by those with ANI (11.7 ± 10.6), the HIV positive subjects without neurocognitive deficits (8.0 ± 4.1) and the healthy controls (3.8 ± 3.2). This result was confirmed when age and years of school education were entered as covariates. No significant correlations between NSS and CD4 counts or any othe...

Relationship with revascularization therapy Background: Persistence of depressive symptoms after myocardial infarction (MI) is associated with an adverse outcome. The relationship between depression and Invasive Revascularization Therapy (IRT) is not yet fully understood. Aim: To compare the frequency of depressive symptoms and other psychosocial variables among patients with MI, undergoing or not undergoing IRT. Material and Methods: Prospective evaluation of 45 patients aged 58 ± 11 years (87% males) with a diagnosis of MI (Killip I and II). On admission to hospital and at follow up 3 months after discharge, all patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Zung Anxiety Inventory (ASI), and the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) social support survey. Depressive symptoms were considered to be present if the BDI score was over 10. Results: Thirty seven percent were hypertensive, 15% diabetic and 44% smokers. Sixty four percent of patients underwent IRT (11.1% revascularization surgery and 53.3% coronary angioplasty). Forty four percent of patients scored over 10 in the BDI at baseline assessment and 26.5% at 3 months follow-up (p < 0.01). At baseline BDI score was 10.2 ± 5.1 and 9.1 ± 4.4 among patients subjected or not subjected to IRT, respectively (NS). The figures at 3 months of follow up were 9.9 ± 5.6 and 4.1 ± 2.5, respectively (p < 0,01). At baseline and three months BDI, anxiety and perceived social support were significantly correlated. Conclusions: Depressive symptoms were frequent after MI in this group of patients, and decreased at follow up only among patients not subjected to IRT.

Nevertheless, its usefulness depends on a previous knowledge of the system metal/media in study. In this work, the evolution of the OCP of cobalt immersed in a carbonate/bicarbonate solution was analyzed by means of a rotatory disc electrode (RDE); the effect of mass transport, and the reactions that can explain the dissolution of the metal in this media were considered. It was observed that the time necessary to reach the stationary value of the OCP is a function of the mass transport. Also, the OCP evolves towards more positive values as the rotation of the electrode is increased. It was confirmed that the corrosion process of the metal is controlled initially by oxygen reduction (cathodic reaction). However, after some time of exposure, i.e. the necessary for the first corrosion products to appear, the formation of a non-pas...

Methods Clinical features, education, age, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were evaluated in 82 patients with SLE and 22 healthy controls, all Chilean women. The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB eclipseTM) assessing attention, spatial memory, and learning and executive function domains was applied. Cognitive deficit definition: a cut-off for definite impairment was defined as a score below -2 standard deviations in at least one outcome measure in two or more domains. ANCOVA with stepwise selection evaluated influences of health status (SLE or control), age, education, and HADS depression and anxiety scores on cognitive outcomes. To avoid overfitting, a shrinkage method was performed. Also, adjusted p-values for multiple comparisons were obtained. Results Cognitive deficit affected 16 (20%) patients, an...

In general, the detection of these symptoms is low, which explains the need for detection systems appropriate to the clinical reality of the oncology team. The objective of this study is to evaluate for the first time the usefulness of an ultra-brief screening instrument [distress thermometer (DT)], in a group of Chilean oncology patients. A total of 166 outpatients were evaluated at the Cancer Center of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, before starting chemotherapy. Two screening instruments were applied: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and DT. The application of HADS resulted in a prevalence of 32.7% of anxiety symptoms (HADS-A ≥ 8), 15.7% of depression symptoms (HADS-D ≥ 8), and 39.8% had a total score of HADS-T ≥ 11...

The relationship between depression and Invasive Revascularization Therapy (IRT) is not yet fully understood. To compare the frequency of depressive symptoms and other psychosocial variables among patients with MI, undergoing or not undergoing IRT. Prospective evaluation of 45 patients aged 58 +/- 11 years (87% males) with a diagnosis of MI (Killip I and II). Thirty seven percent were hypertensive, 15% diabetic and 44% smokers. Sixty four percent of patients underwent IRT (11.1% revascularization surgery and 53.3% coronary angioplasty). Forty four percent of patients scored over 10...

Research paper thumbnail of Prevalence of emotional symptoms in Chilean oncology patients before the start of chemotherapy: potential of the distress thermometer as an ultra-brief screening instrument

Ecancermedicalscience, 2014
