Risk assessment is probably the most important issue in occupational safety. Risk assessment facilitates the design and prioritization of effective prevention measures. Neural network were applied for predicting the severity of accidents, which is an important to assess risks. Data sets were obtained from the official accident notifications in the manufacturing sector of Andalusia in 2011. The results confirm that neural networks are useful in risk factor estimation. Association analysis was used to identify the most important risk factors within the predicting variables. Diagnostic array analyses show that for preventive purposes it is better to use a reduced data set with a casecontrol approach in order to improve the specificity and the sensitivity.

Results from the initial situation in the company are compared to those provided by a heuristic method and by a novel neighbourhood search method. An ARENA simulation model is developed to test the different proposals. The model was validated by comparing the simulation results from the initial company scenario with the real operation results. Consequently, the extension to the developed proposals allows us to select an adequate assembly line for the company, resulting in a greater productivity level and a more balanced line with respect to the operation times in the stations and the activity of the workers. The company has subsequently implemented our proposed schedule, obtaining remarkable improvements in its productivity.

Organization Engineering, more commonly referred to as Industrial Engineering in the English-spea... more Organization Engineering, more commonly referred to as Industrial Engineering in the English-speaking world, is a widespread discipline that covers fields from Economic Analysis to Production Management or Operational Research. Our objective with this paper is to describe the historical evolution of this discipline, star ting from the strive of the Industrial Revolution for efficiently planning and managing the new production means. We discuss the main cornerstones in this evolution, star ting with the works of F.W. The development of online sampling systems assists in the recognition of the behaviour patterns that occur in the offices. This paper presents a methodology specially designed and developed in order to make easier knowledge extraction and representation, in this way it possible to make decisions about the comfort in buildings. The methodology used provides important and useful information to select the comfort set-point of the rooms of a central HVAC system without the need to use fixed values based on programmed time schedules or any other methodology. In this methodology, the users are evaluated by using a standard set of key questions in order to measure the level of satisfaction respect to environmental factors, thanks to a questionnaire of imprecise answers. We seek an improvement in the building users, regardless of their particularities. Keywords : comfort; HVAC; expert...

The estimation of pollutant emissions related to urban freight activities suffers from the same d... more The estimation of pollutant emissions related to urban freight activities suffers from the same difficulty faced when trying to estimate the characteristics of individual urban freight routes or demand parameters. The great variety of urban freight practices forces to attain this objective only through strong hypotheses and simplifications. We propose here a methodology based on the generic characterization of urban freight routes, identifying the main features of each route type and the type of commercial activities typically served by each one of them. This results in an estimation of the overall urban freight route patterns in a city, which in turn can be used to derive aggregate emission values. The methodology is applied to the city of Seville, in the South of Spain, showing promising results.

However, since healthier and more comfortable environments are needed, the best solution is a well-balanced relationship between these two issues. The present article exposes a methodology for a multiobjective analysis which takes into account the consumption and energy efficiency as well as the thermal comfort, based on a field study in non-residential buildings and the application of fuzzy logic. As a result, an improvement related to energy saving and lower costs for buildings’ owners without detrimental to occupants’ thermal comfort and productivity is expected.

Research paper thumbnail of A discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm to operate distributed energy generation networks efficiently

International Journal of Bio-Inspired Computation

This paper deals with the optimisation of the operating costs in a distributed electric and heati... more This paper deals with the optimisation of the operating costs in a distributed electric and heating energy generation network. The network considers different options to supply the electric and heating demand of a large consumer building: the electricity can be directly bought from the grid, can be taken from renewable energy sources or can be produced from gas using a combined heat and power system. In the same line, the heating can be taken from a thermal solar renewable system, from the boiler or from the combined heat and power system. In addition, the large consumer has batteries to store electricity excesses and thermal storage systems to store the heating excess. The multicommodity flow mathematical formulation of the problem couples both electric and thermal models by considering cogeneration systems. The model is solved by a particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm that is compared to the optimal solutions provided by Gurobi optimisation commercial software and a Monte Carlo algorithm. The PSO algorithm proved a very efficient performance in the available short time to provide the energy commands to the systems outperforming the alternative approaches.

They are the main mechanisms of public and private initiatives for the promotion of research, development and innovation, and technology transfer. The main goal of this type of institutions is not a purely economic benefit, but also social and cultural, which makes them an appropriate investment from the public institutions' viewpoint. They promote the creation of companies and agreements with universities and research centers, generate employment, and attract technology-based companies. Therefore, they require in-detail assessment to understand their operation to generate action plans and models that new parks or those who are still in their initial growth phase may follow. This study establishes a series of models-or operation strategies-to identify the strategies of successful parks; that is, parks that have overcome the initial stage and handle high revenue volumes, high rates of land occupation, and a large number of employees.
