Opposing views as to the validity of body image disturbance as a diagnostic criterion for anorexi... more Opposing views as to the validity of body image disturbance as a diagnostic criterion for anorexia nervosa are discussed in relation to diagnosis, prognosis, and the treatment mode. The various methods used to assess body image disturbance are examined and a recommendation that the occupational therapy literature should be investigated to enable a proposal for treatment of the more severe instances of anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION The observation and assessment of behaviour is fundamental to the teaching and pract... more INTRODUCTION The observation and assessment of behaviour is fundamental to the teaching and practice of occupational therapy; the assessment of residual capabilities and potential in those with physical or psychological problems; student performance on written examinations, practical activities or on clinical placements; selection interviews to become a student occupational therapist, or, if qualified, for positions of responsibility. There are difficulties however, in the making of reliable, accurate and valid assessments of the behavioural abilities and potential of other people. Despite the fact that these problems are numerous and specific, very little appears to be done in the teaching of skills and consideration of effective techniques to assess behaviour.

A 10-year analysis of the British Journal of Occupational Therapy was performed to investigate st... more A 10-year analysis of the British Journal of Occupational Therapy was performed to investigate structural characteristics, authorship patterns and topics of most concern. The results of the survey showed that the journal had increased both in size and in the number of articles published per annum. There was an increase in the use of references from 2.5 to 6.5 per article, and single clinical authors wrote 63% of the articles. The topic of most concern continued to be physical occupational therapy, with the subsequent most popular areas being psychiatry, equipment/aids and teaching subjects.

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is a relatively new and complicated procedure for patients with... more Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is a relatively new and complicated procedure for patients with a range of malignant and non-malignant disorders, including aplastic anaemia, leukaemia and severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome. To date, there has been little discussion of the occupational therapist's role in BMT. This article outlines six stages of BMT, and discusses occupational therapy assessment, treatment and long-term follow-up in order to highlight the contribution occupational therapy may make in the care of these patients.
