In particular, the adoption of Western military technology, military strategy, and shipbuilding techniques from the very beginning of European expansion in the region belies the longstanding claims that the Vietnamese bureaucracy was blinded by Confucian dogmas to the real potential of Western technology in state-building and national defence. In fact, expressing strong interests in and understandings of Western material life in the early nineteenth century even as the Western threat was looming, the Vietnamese leadership was far from being introverted and anti-modernist, contrarily to the common belief.

In this paper, effect of YAG:CE particle size on lighting performance of Multi-chip White LED (MCW-LEDs) is considered like an innovative method for improving their lighting performance. Main approaches of this work are: 1) using MCW-LEDs with high color temperature (CCT) near 8500 K, 2) investigating and demonstrating the effect of YAG:CE particle size on lighting performance of Multi-chip White LED with CCT 8500 K. Firstly, the phosphor layer mechanism of real MCW-LEDs with flat silicone coating is simulated by using LightTools 8.1.0 program. Then by varying YAG:CE particle size, ∆CCT, CRI and lumen output of MCW-LEDs were calculated and analyzed. The simulation and experimental results showed that ∆CCT, CRI and lumen output of MCW-LEDs of 8500 K MCW-LEDs are significantly influenced by varying YAG:CE particle size. These results can be a prospective ideal for future improving white LED manufacture.

Research paper thumbnail of Fast automatic saliency map driven geometric active contour model for color object segmentation

Proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Pattern Recognition, 2012

Segmenting objects from color images to obtain useful information is a challenging research area ... more Segmenting objects from color images to obtain useful information is a challenging research area recently. In this paper, a novel algorithm by combining a saliency map with an extension of a geometric active contour model is proposed to automatically segment the object of interest. The saliency map is first generated from the input image by a histogram based contrast method. The most salient regions are then detected as dominant parts of the object. After that, a contour is initialized using salient regions determined. Finally, by applying a geometric active contour model, the contour starts evolving iteratively to segment object boundaries. Experimental results attained on various natural scene images have shown that our proposed method is able to not only replace manual initialized contour and improve the accuracy, noise robustness of segmentation but converge to an optimal solution earlier than recent active contour models as well.

We sought to evaluate the effectiveness of household-contact investigation, as compared with standard, passive measures alone, in Vietnam. We performed a cluster-randomized, controlled trial at clinics in 70 districts (local government areas with an average population of approximately 500,000 in urban areas and 100,000 in rural areas) in eight provinces of Vietnam. Health workers at each district clinic or hospital were assigned to perform either household-contact intervention plus standard passive case finding (intervention group) or passive case finding alone (control group). In the intervention districts, household contacts of patients with positive results for tuberculosis on sputum smear microscopy (smear-positive tuberculosis) were invited for clinical assessment and chest radiography at baseline and at 6, 12, and 24 mo...
