However, the impact of tourist ethnocentrism (TE) on tourism and hospitality-related behaviors has mainly been overlooked in previous research. Hence, the objective of the present study is to propose a comprehensive TE model by exploring the influence of TE and risk perception on the domestic hospitality and tourism industry in Israel.Design/methodology/approachA convenience sample of 204 Israeli respondents 18 years of age or older took part in the study. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to assess hypothesized relationships in the proposed model.FindingsThe data confirmed five out of the eight hypotheses tested. The study findings suggest that TE is unrelated to willingness to pay (WTP) a price premium for local travel or dine in local restaurants. Similarly, the authors found no association between risk perception and willingness to dine in loc...

Using a novel conceptual model based on risk perception and destination image theories, we used an experimental setting to examine whether different types of jellyfish risk messages influenced people's travel intentions and behaviours. In addition, the study tested the influence of worry and culture. We sampled 415 prospective visitors to two of the world's most successful beach tourism destinations, the Costa Brava coastline of Spain and the Great Barrier Reef region of northern Australia, both adversely affected by the presence of jellyfish. At these unique destinations, contact with jellyfish can be painful and deadly. Early in the Covid-19 pandemic, fictitious vignettes were posted on an internet Travel Forum containing two different jellyfish risk messages, one informal and the other official. Participants' responses to these communications were tested. We found that risk messages influenced destination image but not travel intention. People from risk-averse Germanic European countries were more inclined to alter their behaviour by avoiding the water than other cultures. These findings add to the body of knowledge about the relationship between risk communications, risk perceptions and destination image. This study suggests that wildlife-associated risk communications can influence people's risk perceptions, but not sufficiently to change their travel plans. This knowledge is important in policy-making and managing responses to risk at tourism destinations. It is also important in building visitor trust and confidence, whereby tourists know that their safety and enjoyment are valued and are paramount to the destination.

MIC 2017: Managing the Global Economy; Proceedings of the Joint International Conference, Monastier di Treviso, Italy, 24–27 May 2017, 2017

Today's economy is market-driven and is seeking new strategies and business models in order to adapt to the challenges present in the environment. The main market drivers are societal, economic and technological. The sharing economy has emerged as a powerful force, changing the traditional ways of doing business. Sharing economy has grown due to several factors: decreased importance of purchasing power, the increase of urbanization in most countries and sustainability aspects that resulted in stronger environmental regulations as well as a change in buyer's habits and perceptions. One of the first industries impacted was transportation due to reduced private and public spending after the 2008 crisis and deficiencies in public infrastructures which resulted in changes in customer behavior. Thus different business models have appeared in mobility like carsharing, ridesharing and bikesharing. With different business models-B2C, P2P, non-profit cooperative-but pursuing the same philosophy: customers pay for the time the vehicles are used, the distance covered or a combination of the two. Another very impacted industry is tourism where sharing economy is changing destination choice, increase in travel frequency, length of stay and type of activities developed among others. Most previous research asserted that sharing economy could produce a big impact in tourism in the near future with huge economic, environmental and societal benefits. Thus, everything looks bright. However, some authors opine that not all is gold that is glittering. Sharing economy has also some undesirable impacts, threatening existing business models, reducing safety in travel, crowding cities and creating precarious by destroying safe employment. Therefore, this work is a thorough literature review that attempts to put on the table lights and shadows in order to make a critical analysis to identify the maximum possible advantages and positive impacts in society. Thus, researchers as well as practitioners will benefit from a complete overview on this new and demanding topic.

A survey was conducted to find strategies and measure the impacts suffered by tourism companies during the last financial crisis. Regarding strategies, apart from analyzers, the sample included all three other archetypes. Prospectors were the best prepared to withstand an economic downturn, with defenders scoring second. Reactors were the worst performers. The conclusions highlight that it is wise for owners/managers of tourism companies to select a strategy that suits the environmental situation.

Two universities in two different cultural settings (Germany and Peru) coordinated the lecture times of their classes on cross-cultural competencies in such a way that after a few theoretical introduction sessions, classes were jointly taught through the use of videoconferences. Empirical evidence showed that the main achievements of the videoconferences were a better understanding of the other culture (including stereotypes) and awareness of differences in communication patterns, differences between low context and high context, and different value orientations in regards to monochromic and polychronic use of time. In contrast, the main challenges were technological and administrative in nature.

Male and female owners of travel agencies were interviewed to indicate their crisis readiness and measures taken to confront the crisis. Gender based differences in strategic decision-making were detected. Whereas men and women were equally successful to overcome the crisis, their strategies differed. Women were on average significantly younger, employed measures focusing on price, kept social measures intact and employed to a lesser extent drastic measures to reduce costs (layoffs, dismissals). Men used drastic measures most. The differences in strategic choice can be attributed to a gender specific leadership style.

Tourism, specifically the hospitality industry, is important for the economy of Southern European countries, where the crisis has been the worst. Spain especially depends on tourism as important source of GDP. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify the contributing factors to better manage the crisis impacts and anticipate future impacts. Design/methodology/approach The authors examine the performance of a sample of 7,293 Spanish hospitality companies based on data from 2008 to 2011. Depending on their cultural background the interviewees associated very different feelings with the historical character shown in the cartoon. Additionally, the articulation and the style of the underlying music were perceived in different ways by both cultures. However, the results show that even though the commercial and the lyrics are differently understood and interpreted, the targeted marketing message is equally conveyed. The differences in perceptions observed are correlated with the Hofstede indexes for cross-cultural dimensions. This study is the first one to analyse perceptions about the same historical celebrity used in advertising among different countries and to correlate them with the Hofstede dimensions. It can thus give answers to the applicability of a certain type of advertising in different cultures, given that Hofstede dimensions are available for the selected countries.

This can only be achieved through actively promoting women in business. Various HR instruments are available to support a gender diversity strategy, one of which is mentoring. This chapter ascertains in what way mentoring is a sustainable instrument for the promotion of women in business specifically in Germany, by analyzing mentoring programs in various German companies from the points of view of both mentees and mentors.
