Teamwork and project management

2004

Teamwork and Project Management 4 Karl A. Smith 7 Karl A. Smith that didn't work," retorted my colleague. "Well, then I'd call my friends in other companies to see if any of them had solved it." Again my colleague would say, "Suppose that didn't work." "Then I'd call some vendors to see if any of them had a solution." My colleague, growing impatient at not hearing a problem solution, would say, "Suppose that didn't work." At some stage in this interchange, the engineer would say, "Well, gee, I guess I'd have to solve it myself." To which my colleague would reply, "What percentage of the problems you encounter fall into this category?" Engineer after engineer replied, "About five percent"! Acknowledgments Many people deserve credit for guidance in this project. Michael B. Mahler, a graduate student in civil engineering at the University of Minnesota who I've taught with and worked with on project management for many years, provided enormous insight into the process of what will work for students and was a source of constant support and encouragement. Robert C. Johns co-taught the project management course with me a Minnesota and provided lots of good ideas. Anthony M. Starfield, co-creator of the first year course, How to Model It, and co-author of the book by the same title encouraged me to use the questioning format of the How to Model It book to engage the reader. The five manuscript reviewers provided terrific assistance. Holly Stark and Eric Munson, McGraw-Hill; and Byron Gottfried, Consulting Editor, initiated the idea and provided guidance throughout. A special note of thanks to my daughters, Riawa and Sharla Smith, who helped with the editing and graphics. A special acknowledgment to Michigan State University, which provided me with a wonderful place to work on this project during my sabbatical leave. Another goes to David and Teamwork and Project Management 8 Karl A. Smith Roger Johnson (whose cooperative learning model provides the theoretical basis for this book) for their great ideas, generosity, and steadfast support. Most of all I thank the hundreds of students who learned from and with me in project management courses for their patience, perseverance, wonderful suggestions and ideas, and interest and enthusiasm in project management and teamwork.

The Project Team Features Effectiveness and Leadership

Risk in Contemporary Economy, 2017

The project team that is responsible for providing flexibility and innovation to this structure in order to enable organizations to remain successful (1). The very nature of the project team's work underpins a collective task much more complex than that assumed by other types of work teams. The aim of this paper is to explore the main factors that determine the project team effectiveness. The research methodology was the literature review. The main finding reveals that the organizational structure of projects and the project team should not be considered as a panacea for all problems of organizational effectiveness.

How Team Efficacy Beliefs Impact Project Performance: An Empirical Investigation of Team Potency in Capital Projects in the Process Industries

Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research), 2009

Team efficacy beliefs show promise in enhancing team performance. Using a model-based quantitative research design, we investigated the antecedents and performance consequences of generalized team efficacy (potency) in a sample of 56 capital projects executed by 15 Fortune 500 companies in the process industries. Empirical analysis of our field survey identified that generalized team efficacy beliefs were positively associated with an objective measure of project cost performance. Regression analysis revealed that team competence, empowering leadership, and performance feedback all predicted generalized team efficacy beliefs. Tests of mediation revealed that generalized team efficacy fully mediated between these three inputs and project cost performance.

An Empirical Impact of Project Management Competencies on the Project Success

International Journal of Science, Mathematics and Technology Learning, 2022

Project management competencies emphasis on the association of skills with the project environment. Numerous studies have examined project managers' capability to project success. The project manager must retain a set of competencies that can be useful according to the project situation. The efficiency of the project manager's competency depends on the project manager's connection with the project team that boosts experimentation and learning. The main purpose of this study was to discover the impact of project success. To this end, this study collected information on project management capabilities and project complexity. Data were collected through online surveys and logistic regression models were applied for data analysis. The first research question, namely, to what extent project management capability predicts project success, is answered. As expected, the findings provide evidence that the integration of project management capabilities and project complexity can predict project success. There was no statistically significant correlation between project management ability and project success being rejected. A second predictive model involving project management capabilities, project complexity, and project success is a good one.

Teams and Project Performance: An Ability, Motivation, and Opportunity Approach

Project Management Journal, 2020

This article analyzes the relationships between project performance and the team’s ability, motivation, and opportunity (AMO). We contribute to the project management literature by exploring which combinations of AMO factors are best for project performance at different levels of complexity. We test our hypotheses on a sample of 285 projects. Our study shows that in simple projects, ability is the key factor both as a main effect and as a constraining factor that acts as a bottleneck for project performance. In the case of complex projects, the multiplicative model is superior given the significant interaction effects of motivation.

FACTORS INFLUENCING PROJECT TEAM EFFECTIVENESS AS PERCEIVED BY PROJECT MANAGERS IN MALAYSIA – A PILOT STUDY

As more project teams are formed to help Malaysian organizations in achieving their objectives that individual efforts cannot achieve, there is a compelling reason to understand the critical factors that can influence project team effectiveness, because the effectiveness outcome can yield benefits to organizations. This study developed a research model underpinned on Cohen & Bailey’s (1997) Team Effectiveness Framework to empirically analyze some critical factors that influence project team effectiveness. Results show that project manager’s leadership roles are not directly influencing project team effectiveness, but they are directly influencing both team building & participation, and team shared mental models in which these two factors are directly and positively influencing project team effectiveness.

THE IMPACT OF PROJECT COMPLEXITY ON PROJECT SUCCESS WITH THE MEDIATING ROLE OF TEAM PERFORMANCE

IJBMS, 2023

Complexity in project management can lead to major problems for many projects. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify problems in project complexity so that managers can increase the likelihood of project success. this study assesses the influence of project complexity on project success using team performance as a mediator. The literature on Construction Industry is vast and hence reviewed from worldwide research work. To contribute to this wide array of research work, projects from the construction industry of Pakistan are targeted and data is collected through an adapted questionnaire. Through the data collected from 420 respondents, the results from SEM through PLS-3 revealed that Project Complexity has an impact on Project Success and Team Performance partially mediates the relationship between them. In conclusion, issues with team performance are a sign of project complexity in major construction projects in Pakistan. The complexity that occurs in various projects needs mitigation strategies to overcome project failure. There are negative consequences of project complexities that enforce project managers to increase the team performance to achieve project success. Future research can look at how leadership that is genuine, inspiring, empowering, and positive influences the relationship between project complexity and success.

Factors That Influencing Project Management Performance: A Review

w. International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences, 2021

Optimal project performance is vital to success and avoid delay. Assessing projects improve their performance by providing accurate feedback to team members and managers. To construct an assessment tool that is both valid and reliable, it is necessary to understand what should be measured .The purpose of this paper is to introduce a review on how to measure performance in the project and to determine factors that influenced the project performance. The present paper focuses on the importance of project performance and the factors that influence on project performance. It also offer valuable information to the researchers in the field of project management. The outcome of this study introduces a literature review for project performance according to the previous studies in the field of project management. The analysis of the literature contributes to the body of knowledge on the subject of project management and factors that influenced project performance.
