E-learning platforms are essential tools used widely for teaching and learning English, especiall... more E-learning platforms are essential tools used widely for teaching and learning English, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. They are also used to communicate and interact with students, assess progress, evaluate assignments, and provide feedback. However, teachers of English face potential barriers when they use such platforms. This study examines the use of e-learning platforms in teaching English as a foreign language in Jordan. The study employed a quantitative research method. The findings revealed that using e-learning platforms for educational purposes is beneficial regarding accessibility when attending courses. E-learning enabled the students to practise more and to be more engaged in the learning process, which improved their language skills. Effective e-learning platform strategies significantly broaden students' perceptions and increase the opportunity to exchange information with their classmates. Nonetheless, several impediments may hinder the application of e-learning platforms, including teacher-related, technical, and technological factors. The study recommends that teachers use interactive methods, including images, sounds, videos, and multimedia, to engage learners with various needs and abilities. The study also suggests building codified standards when designing e-learning to develop students' skills at all levels and training teachers on using modern technological strategies in e-learning.

The key multilingual propaganda documents and media modes have been used as primary sources for I... more The key multilingual propaganda documents and media modes have been used as primary sources for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria's (ISIS) propaganda strategy. To further expand the discussion on the propaganda intentions by ISIS, the researchers demonstrated the study conducted that attempted to explore the role of miscontextualisation of Qur'anic verses through ISIS's linguistic propaganda strategy from a socio-political perspective. The study seeks to illustrate how ISIS utilised its miscontextualisation of Qur'anic verses through its linguistic propaganda strategy to justify its extreme actions for achieving the socio-political goals. It uses linguistic stylistics to demonstrate that ISIS made a piecemeal usage of the Qur'an by miscontextualisation of Qur'anic verses through its propaganda publications to justify its extreme actions. It systematically situates the particular Qur'anic passages that ISIS uses within the wider Qur'anic passages/chapters in which they originate. More specifically, this contextualisation highlights the discrepancies between the original contexts of these passages and their miscontextualisation by ISIS. The results of the study revealed that all linguistic strategies that comprise ISIS's discourse revolve around four main themes: Khilaafah, Imamah, Jihad, and Hijrah. These connections are important because they clarify the priorities inherent in ISIS's discourse as an instrument for achieving socio-political gains and agendas.

This paper aims at investigating the conceptual and connotative meanings of the black and white c... more This paper aims at investigating the conceptual and connotative meanings of the black and white colours as used in the Jordanian society in order to find out the role played by culture in shaping the meaning of lexical items. The results show that all the participants of the study interpret the target expressions according to their connotative meanings rather than lexical ones. The major finding of the study is white colour suggests positive meaning whereas black colour suggests negative meaning; however, few expressions do not follow this pattern such as, 'his eye is white', 'white death' and 'black horse'.

Shop signs are essential because potential customers see signs before they use the service that a... more Shop signs are essential because potential customers see signs before they use the service that a business offers. This study investigates how the promotion of goods or services is lexicalized in commercial café signs in the trendy Jordanian society. It investigates the linguistic material of café signs in a sample of 142 café sign boards in Irbid-Jordan. The signs were photographed and 20 cafés' owners were interviewed to better understand the factors that affect their use of café signs. The study employed the qualitative approach to analyse the observation and interview data. The results revealed that the café signage was largely dominated by the English language due to its vitality, globalization, economic motivations, and the customers' positive attitudes toward English. The study also revealed the lexicalization of trendy café names, lexical modernization, foreign cultural and pragmatic referents, such as superiority, religious, emotional, ethical, physical strength, color, historical, floral, celebrity reference which aim to heighten prominence. Different linguistic strategies including politeness strategy, personification, and metaphor were found in the signs to attract customers. The study would contribute to a better understanding of the use of English in lingua franca contexts in Jordan, and utilizing these commercial signs as a realistic source of learning linguistic strategies and pragmatics. Contribution/ Originality: Due to the scarce studies of café signs in Jordan, the current study analyses the use of different languages in the linguistic landscape which offers specifics about written communication between language users. The study contributes to a better understanding of the use of English in lingua franca contexts in Jordan.

English cultural bound color idioms to Arabic by Jordanian
students of English. English cultural bound color idioms are
used to describe those expressions which are connected with
western culture and may not have equivalents in Jordanian
culture. To achieve the aim, the researchers selected a sample
of 40 undergraduate English Jordanian students enrolled in AHU. The researchers designed a culture-based translation
test (CBTT) that consists of 20 statements as test items; each
statement contained a culture-bound color term within its
contextual meaning. The results of the study revealed that
AHU English majors’ performance in translating English
cultural bound color idioms is very poor as reflected by their
scores on CBTT. In addition, the results show that this poor
performance in this particular context is due to the lack of the
knowledge of English cultural bound color idioms, the absence
of Jordanian Arabic equivalence, and the inappropriate
selection of translation methods by the participants.
