This paper introduces a probabilistic framework for concrete bridge LCC estimation based on dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) modelling that stakeholders can consult in projects' preliminary stages for proper decision-making. Firstly, probability distributions of material quantities and construction costs for the superstructure and foundation are estimated. Subsequently, the maintenance costs of deck expansion joints are illustratively presented, as they are considered vulnerable bridge elements with frequent repairs. The proposed DBN contains continuous and time-dependent variables thoroughly registered over multiple time stages. The DBN is formulated using actual records of 60 concrete bridges' construction, inspections, condition and maintenance from the Egnatia Odos motorway in Greece. The presented approach is an effective tool for bridge management enhancement owing to stochastic dynamic interdependencies among parameters and continuous information updating.

Infrastructure assets are preeminently multi-components systems with existing dependencies between their components. The extant literature approaches generally the issue of maintenance models in multi-component systems without referring to specific items or deals mainly with systems of machinery and equipment. This research aims to conceptualize the necessary steps for determining the remaining economic status of infrastructure assets by calculating their "Service Value" via a probabilistic dynamic integrated predictive system and implement appropriate maintenance plans that can prohibit false life-cycle cost estimation. The model will be introduced on road bridges as ones of the most critical and difficult to analyze structures in road infrastructure systems. The proposed framework guarantees the financial sustainability of the project, its uninterrupted operation and unplanned traffic delays reduction, thus preventing adverse productivity, mobility and economic impacts.

Research paper thumbnail of Exploring of the Consequences of Human Resources Multitasking in Industrial Automation Projects: A Tool to Mitigate Impacts

Multitasking affects significantly human productivity. This reduction in productivity has as a direct result the delay of the primary task which may cause an overall delay to the project with cost and time overruns. A project should be seen in a global environment that of the company, where resources are shared among its portfolio of projects. Although multitasking might have negative results, it is something that cannot be eliminated, but it can be mitigated by project managers. This work presents the effects of multitasking in human productivity, especially when the tasks are complex, like PLC/SCADA software development. Using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, a simple tool is created to be used by project managers, in order to assist them in decision making. Criteria that influence these decisions are referenced and their priority vectors are proposed. Also, some real examples are given. A project manager faces a complex situation when they asked to decide allocation of resources and priorities among different projects. Parameters that are difficult to predict in real situations may have a significant role in the decision making process. There are a lot of published works based on AHP applications in different fields, but there is a gap in the field of industrial automation projects and the related project manager's decision making. This study focuses on these decision making process which determines which tasks should be paused or not for a better allocation of resources, taking into account the global environment of a technical company. The tool can be implemented with changing criteria and priority vectors to adapt to different type of projects. Future research could identify additional criteria and sub-criteria with different priority vectors, depending on different project specifications.

This paper introduces a comprehensive systematic literature review focusing on CBA’s methodological perspective for identifying its current modelling approaches and scrutinizing their key features and encompassed tools. Fifty-six relevant studies were extracted from Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar from 2005 until 2020. Initially, the bibliometric analysis presents an overall illustration of the most significant CBA concepts. The descriptive statistics determined eight distinct modelling categories used for CBA implementation, each encompassing three different modelling approaches for capturing the data risk assessment (deterministic or probabilistic), CBA’s parameters interactive behavior (static or dynamic) and the considered economies (microeconomic or macroeconomic). In-depth content analysis led to the interpre...

Construction equipment is the largest capital investment for construction companies. Proper maintenance is of major importance for efficiency, productivity, minimization of equipment costs, and environmental management. The aim of this study is to propose an integrated smart system that will monitor the condition based on productivity of the equipment and will provide diagnostic data, helping to optimize the production process, achieve timely maintenance and increasing the expected “economic” life of the equipment. At the same time, it will positively provide the concept for sustainable or green construction with the minimization and elimination of harmful effects on the environment and on the human. The system will include sensors, placed on specific construction equipment components, and wil...

Construction equipment is an integral part of every construction project, and its contribution during construction determines any project’s completion. It also represents a significant capital investment for companies in this sector. A major strategic goal for such companies is the increase in the equipment’s productivity, which is affected mostly by its operators. The aim of this research is to recognize and prioritize the criteria affecting the performance of construction equipment operators. Scientometric analysis, using VOSViewer software, was implemented for the formation of different kinds of bibliometric networks, proposing a holistic approach to this research field. Those networks delineated the field with regard to construction equipment operators and revealed the correlations between the network’s items, which were formed because of previous research, and finally, conclusions were d...

Fleet management (FM) is a feature that allows companies to avoid or minimize the risks associated with investing in equipment, efficiency, productivity, overall transportation costs, impartial compliance in legislation. FM can include a variety of functions such as equipment acquisition, maintenance, licensing, accident management, replacement, equipment tracking, health and safety management, and many others. Internationally, there have been developed many Fleet Management Software (FMS) that offer a company with several functionalities. In this research the functions of the most globally used FMS are analysed and evaluated according to their qualitative characteristics. A questionnaire was distributed among significant large construction companies and public construction institutions in Greece, in order to evaluate those characteristics. ...

Research paper thumbnail of Hierarchizing the Criteria of Construction Equipment Procurement Decision Using the AHP Method

Fleet managers, contractors, and technical companies search for maximum equipment profitability during the economic life of a machine. Decisions on when to replace a piece of equipment are characterized by many uncertain factors that are difficult to quantify. A literature review and a scientometric analysis are conducted, revealing a gap in the global research, concerning the hierarchy of the criteria in decision making, when coming to procure a CE. The purpose of this article is to address that void in the extant literature by proposing a holistic equipment procurement decision model. A scientometric analysis of the last 25 years is performed to investigate the use of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) in the thematic area. A modified decision model based on the AHP is developed to prioritize factors that determine decisions on equipment procurements. Unstructured interviews with academia, experts, original equipment manufacturers, and practitioners in the field are conducted in conjunction with an extensive literature review to determine the critical “soft” and “cost” factors incorporated in the model. It seems that this is the first integrated attempt to prioritize the “key” factors that determine decisions of equipment procurement.
