Such networks belong to the category of networks with accelerated growth but their shortest path length appears to reveal the network size dependence of different functional form than the ones known so far. We thus compare the networks created from literary texts with their artificial substitutes based on different variants of the Dorogovtsev-Mendes model and observe that none of them is able to properly simulate the novel asymptotics of the shortest path length. Then, we identify the local chain-like linear growth induced by grammar and style as a missing element in this model and extend it by incorporating such effects. It is in this way that a satisfactory agreement with the empirical result is obtained.

Both cytoplasmic and nuclear immunoreactions for nm-23H1 were observed in cells of FTCs, FTAs and NGs. In oxyphilic adenomas cytoplasmic staining was observed. Eleven (91.7%) cases of FTC, 55 (98.2%) cases of FTA and 14 (82.4%) cases of NG were found to be positive for nm23-H1 protein. There were no statistically significant differences in the mean percentage values of immunopositive cells between carcinomas and adenomas. A significant increase in the number of cases with high percentage (more than 50) of positive cells was found in both carcinomas (FTCs) and adenomas (FTAs)--mainly microfollicular ones, in comparison with nodular goiter. It can be concluded that highly positive immunoreaction for the nm23-H1 protein in the cells of carcinomas (FTCs) and microfollicular adenomas indicates for a high proliferation rate of these tumors.

Material and methods: Material included 690 cases of malignant and benign thyroid lesions with primary histopathology established in 1985-1999. These cases were selected to multicentre study. The studies were sent from centres which agreed to participate in the project and than coded in the independent centre-Department of Nuclear Medicine and Endocrine Oncology. 40 pathologists from 25 centres provided their diagnoses which were compared with the reference ones. Results: 10 547 diagnoses were evaluated, both on their accuracy of the distinction between malignant and benign lesions and on their accuracy of cancer histotype definition. The reference diagnosis was made by an agreement between four expert pathologists (D.L., S.S., J.S. and A.K.). The participants diagnosed 21% of cases differently than experts. Concerning the diagnosis of cancer histotype, the difference between participants diagnosis and the reference one was even higher. The best concordance was achieved in the diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer, however, on the cost of cancer overdiagnosis by some participants. Follicular cancer was diagnosed accurately only in 75.4% of cases. Conclusion: The study documents a high inter-observer variability of thyroid cancer diagnosis and confirms the lesser accuracy of diagnosis of follicular cancer.

Among follicular carcinomas, 11 out of 12 examined cases (91.7%) were positive for P161NK4A protein. Among follicular adenomas the percentage of immunopositivity was 76.5% (45/57) and among nodular goiter cases it was 19.3% (13/17). Overexpression of P16INK4A protein was found in 66.7% (8/12) of follicular carcinomas and in 19.3% (11/57) of follicular adenomas; the values of this parameter were statistically significantly higher in the follicular carcinoma group (p < 0.005). No P16INK4A protein overexpression was noted in nodular goiter cells. High immunohistochemically-detected expression of P16INK4A protein in follicular thyroid carcinoma cells suggests that the altered expression pattern of P16INK4A protein may disturb the regulatory mechanisms of thyreocyte cell cycle and plays a significant role in the formation of benign neoplasms and their malignant counterparts derived from follicular thyroid cell.

A role of apoptosis and BRCA1 germ-line mutation in breast cancer appearance was investigated in this study by both apoptosis frequency analysis and mutation screening of BRCA1 among breast cancer cases. Blood was obtained from 40 women with node-negative and node-positive ductal breast carcinomas with uniform tumor size. The blood samples from age matched healthy women (n=42) served as control. BRCA1 gene mutations were determined by PCR-RFLP methods. The apoptotic peripheral blood cells were detected by agarose gel electrophoresis. The apoptotic cells were identified in 30% (12/40) of the patients. There were no significant differences in apoptosis frequencies between patients and controls (P > 0.05). Three mutations of BRCA1 gene were identified in apoptosis positive samples from breast cancer women; one Ex20insC and two ExII17delA. Our study implies that apoptosis may be involved not only in sporadic breast carcinoma without BRCA1 mutations, but also in BRCA1-associated breast carcinoma.

In this study we analyzed, using immunohistochemical methods, the expression of cyclin D1 and Rb proteins in material from medical archives (12 cases of follicular thyroid carcinoma, 57 cases of follicular adenoma and 17 nodular goiter cases). A positive nuclear reaction for cyclin D1 was observed in 83.3% (10/12) of the follicular carcinomas, in 96.5% (55/57) of the follicular adenomas and in 23.5% (4/17) of nodular goiters. Overexpression of cyclin Dl (more than 50% of positively staining cells) was noted in 25% (3/12) of the follicular carcinomas and in 22.8% (13/57) of the follicular adenomas. No overexpression of cyclin D1 was noted among nodular goiters. The number of carcinoma cases with cyclin D1 overexpression did not differ statistically in any significant way from the follicular adenoma group (p = 1.000). A positive nuclear reaction for Rb protein was noted in 100% of the follicular carcinomas (12/12), in 96.5% of the follicular adenomas (55/57) and in 47.1% of the cases (8/17) of nodular goiter. Rb protein overexpression (more than 50% of positively staining cells) was found in 83.3% (10/12) of the follicular carcinomas, in 68.4% (39/57) of the follicular adenomas and in 11.8% (2/17) of the nodular goiters. The number of cases with Rb protein overexpression in the follicular carcinoma group did not differ significantly from that in the follicular adenoma group (p = 0.486). A positive correlation was found in the groups studied between the expressions of Rb protein and cyclin D1. However, the correlation was statistically significant only in the nodular goiter group (Rs = 0.567; p = 0.018). In the follicular carcinoma group, that correlation was borderline (Rp = 0.437; p = 0.072) and, in the follicular adenoma group, it was statistically insignificant (Rs = 0.217; p = 0.105). Our results confirm the existence of mutual regulation mechanisms of Rb and cyclin D1 protein expressions, which are observed in cells from various carcinomas.

However, a text composed exclusively of such sentences looks technical and reads boring. The text composed of long ones, on the other hand, demands significantly more effort for comprehension. Studying characteristics of the sentence length variability (SLV) in a large corpus of world-famous literary texts shows that an appealing and aesthetic optimum appears somewhere in between and involves selfsimilar, cascade-like alternation of various lengths sentences. A related quantitative observation is that the power spectra S(f) of thus characterised SLV universally develop a convincing `1/f^beta' scaling with the average exponent beta = 1/2, close to what has been identified before in musical compositions or in the brain waves. An overwhelming majority of the studied texts simply obeys such fractal attributes but especially spectacular in this respect are hypertext-like, "stream of consciousnes...

The role of MSI in familial predisposition to colorectal cancer was investigated in this study by microsatellite analysis among familial cases. PCR-based microsatellite analysis was performed in blood obtained from 30 members from HNPCC families. Blood samples age matched healthy individuals (n = 28) served as control. MSI was studied at five loci containing single- or dinucleotide repeat sequences and mapping to different chromosomal locations: BAT-25 (at locus 4q12), BAT-26 (2p16), D2S123 (2p16-p21), D5S346 (5q21-q22) and D17S250 (17q11.2-q12). MSI frequency was higher in member of HNPCC families (40%) than in control (10.7%) cases. Out of the 30 samples tested, 12 were found to be MSI positive, 9 MSI high and 3 MSI low. The present study suggest that microsatellite instability seem to be a risk factor of colorectal cancer in subjects belonged to HNPCC families with hig...

The aim of this report was to analyse cases of fetal malformation, which might have been caused by EARS. A retrospective analysis of 3173 autopsies performed within a span of 14 years (1989-2003). Among 744 cases of malformations 14 cases of fetuses and newborns presented developmental anomalies, which probably were the consequences of EARS. The EARS is probably more frequent than it is generally presumed, but it is very often impossible to find remnants of bands and sheets. Nevertheless, the presence of at least two typical anomalies excludes a different cause than early amnion rupture and amniotic bands.

It was established that this anomaly is an extremely rare complication of multiple pregnancies and very uncommon congenital malformation disclosed in fetuses and newborns. Acardiac "recipient" fetuses may have different morphological forms and often their birth weight is higher than that of the "donor" fetuses. The latter represent morphologic features of circulatory overload due to the necessity of supplying blood to the amorphous acardiac fetus. They are usually born preterm with circulatory insufficiency, intrauterine hypoxia and with developmental anomalies. Survival of one of the "donor" fetus implies the necessity of early diagnosis to detect pregnancy pathology, possible intrauterine intervention and monitoring of the healthy twin.

According to the recent reports nowadays tumor front grading (TFG) is one of the most reliable methods of estimation of the progress of the changes in the peripheral part of tumor and it seems to be one of the technics, which is able to assess the dynamics of the tumor growth quite precisely. In this sudy it was presented direct relation between morphological features of tumor front and survival. The authors have analysed 120 cases of patients who were operated on the laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma in ENT Department Medical University of Lódź between 1995-2000. Features of the morphologic tumor front grading was performed on H&E-stained sections in the peripheral parts of a tumor. Dependence on tumor grade G, tumor size T, lymph node metastases and survival were analysed. Our stud...

Recent study indicated that hamartoma may be associated with a chronic inflammatory diseases. Histochemical analysis of the expression profile of growth-relevant was shown the upregulation of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in hamartomas and surrounding lung parenchyma. We investigated polymorphism G/C at position -173 promoter gene of MIF, pro-inflammatory cytokine in pulmonary hamartoma. This polymorphism of the MIF gene are association with increased production of MIF and have been found to confer increased risk of susceptibility to chronic inflammatory diseases. DNA samples were obtained from hamartoma tissue fixed with formalin, embedded in paraffin, from 52 patients and from blood samples of 123 sex and age matched healthy person served as control. The G/C polymorphism of MIF gene was determined by PCR-based AluI restriction fragment length polimorphi...

Between 1990 and 2004 in Polish Mother's Health Institute gastroschisis was diagnosed in 108 cases. Basing on information from the Department of Pathology, Department of Pediatric Surgery and Department of Fetal Therapy, the patients were divided into 2 groups: 1) miscarried fetuses, still born neonates and non-operated live newborns who died within several hours after delivery (31 cases); 2) live born operated on newborns (77 cases). Until 1999 gastroschisis was diagnosed prenatally only in 30% of patients, while after 1999 the defect was diagnosed in 70% of cases. From the year 2000, due to close cooperation with obstetricians, newborns with gastroschisis have been operated on directly after delivery at the same...
