This study was conducted to evaluate the effects on soil chemical properties and plant growth aft... more This study was conducted to evaluate the effects on soil chemical properties and plant growth after applying soldier fly compost (SFC). Treatments were as follows. No fertilizer (NF), control, SFC1 (SFC 250 kg/10a), SFC2 (SFC 500 kg/10a) and SFC3 (SFC 1,000 kg/10a). As compared to control in the pot test, organic matter (OM) and exchangeable sodium (Ex-Na) of SFC3 treatment were increased, and growth and nutrient uptake of young radish were not significantly different. Correlation coefficient between soil chemical factors like total nitrogen (T-N), OM, and CEC and uptake of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) was significantly positive (p≤0.05). Compared to control in the field test, electrical conductivity, T-N, OM, Av.-P 2 O 5 , and CEC was increased, and lettuce growth was not significantly different. Correlation coefficient between application amount of SFC and T-N, OM, and Av.-P 2 O 5 was significant positively (p≤ 0.05). These results indicated that the application of SFC improved nutrient availability of soil by increasing OM and CEC.

Super absorbent polymers (SAPs) are hydrophilic molecules that can absorb large amounts of water.... more Super absorbent polymers (SAPs) are hydrophilic molecules that can absorb large amounts of water. This study was conducted to investigate the enhancement of the physicochemical properties of sand soil blended with three SAPs imbibed with 100, 150, and 200-fold water. Three treatments were applied, namely, 100SAP, 150SAP, and 200SAP. The three SAPs were blended at concentrations of 0% (control), 3%, 5%, 7%, and 10% with sand. The pH, electrical conductivity, and cation exchangeable capacity (CEC) of soil blended with the three SAPs were pH 6.35-6.46, 0.09-0.65 dS/m, and 1.42-1.92 cmol c /kg, respectively, and their capillary porosity, total porosity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity were 21.0-29.3%, 39.2-48.7%, and 272-470 mm/hr. CEC, capillary porosity, total porosity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity of soil were positively correlated with the ratio of the SAPs (p<0.01). These results indicate that blending sand soil with SAPs increased CEC, capillary porosity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity, thus improving the nutrient-retention capacity, water-retention capacity, and permeability of the soil.

Light is an important factor that influences the growth and development of flowering plants. The ... more Light is an important factor that influences the growth and development of flowering plants. The present study investigated the effects of in vitro acclimatization to different light colors (white light (WL; control), blue light (BL; 447 nm), green light (GL; 519 nm), and red light (RL; 667 nm)) on the growth of petunia (Petunia hybrida) and of hardening cultivation of plant transferred form in vitro to a greenhouse under sunlight. Compared to the control, the shoot length and leaf width of Petunia increased by 42% and 11.7%, respectively, after acclimatization to BL and the shoot growth increased by 29.3% after acclimatization to RL. The chlorophyll and carotenoid contents after acclimatization to BL and GL were 16.7% and 11.3% higher, respectively, and 14.4% and 11.9% higher, respectively, than those in the control. During greenhouse cultivation, the shoot length increased by 16.7% and 11.3%, respectively, after acclimatization to BL and RL, respectively, and the leaf length and leaf width increased by 14.4% and 11.9%, respectively, after acclimatization to GL. While dry weight of root of GL and BL was not significant difference in vitro, increased by 59.0% and 22.9% ex vitro than that of WL. Thus, acclimatization to BL increased the shoot growth and leaf chlorophyll contents, and acclimatization to GL and RL enhanced shoot and root growth, in petunia.

Cellular conversions during differentiation and regeneration have been investigated using various combinations of phytohormones; however, studies on genes for reprogramming toward desired tissue identities have been limited. In this study, we isolated Petunia protoplasts and cultured them in the callus, rooting, or shooting stages, which were used to establish the optimal protoplast culture conditions and to identify genes that epigenetically function as tissue identifiers. The optimal conditions for plasmolysis and enzyme digestion to obtain healthy protoplasts were compared, in which combinations of Viscozyme, Celluclast, and Pectinex (VCP) enzymes were more efficient in isolating protoplasts when followed by 21 to 25% sucrose purification and washing processes. R... more Precision agriculture has been implemented in various cultivation operations for various crops. Recently, autonomous mower tractor with variable rate fertilization has been tried. Variable rate fertilization requires quantification of grass growth level. Objective of this study was to compare the performance of potential sensors under different growth levels and sensor operation conditions. A CCD camera, an ultrasonic module, and an optical reflectance sensor (i.e., Crop Circle) were tested at fields with different grass growth levels. Effects of sensor mounting height and angle were investigated. Effects of vehicle (i.e., mower tractor) vibration and traveling were also investigated: under static, vibration and no traveling, and vibration with traveling conditions. Results showed that sensor mounting height had a little effect on the sensor performance, and grass growth level was successfully quantified. Camera angle of 90° showed the best performance with less noise. The ultrasonic sensor could work with less deviation under static condition, whereas, CCD camera proved the applicability under all operating conditions. Operation condition of the optical reflectance sensor showed a little effect on the grass growth detection results. This study would provide information useful for automated grass growth mapping and variable fertilization recommendation.

Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the reducing effect of New Zealand spinach (NZS) on these androgenic symptoms by orally administering its extract to 26-week-old rats for four weeks. Biochemical blood testing was conducted, and the andropause symptoms-related indicators and muscular endurance levels were examined. In the NZS extract-treated rats, the decrease in muscle mass was suppressed, and immobility time was reduced in the forced swim test. In addition, the grip force and muscular endurance of the forelimbs were significantly increased compared to the control group; therefore, NZS extract exhibits a positive effect on the maintenance of muscle mass and improves muscular endurance. Food allergies are becoming an increasingly important global health issue. This study was undertaken to verify the effects of peanut sprout extract (PNSE) on the inhibition of allergic and anaphylactic responses using a peanut (PN)-immunized food allergy mouse model. Fresh peanut sprouts were germinated for 0, 3, 5, and 7 days using mature peanuts. Mice were then sensitized to cholera toxin plus PNE or PNSE by intragastric administration on days 0 and 7, and were then challenged with PNE or PNSE on days 21 and 35. After 5 weeks, we examined the mucosal mast cell degranulation, ear swelling, and systemic anaphylaxis stimulated by PNE extract, in comparison with PNSE. Subsequently, Ara h1, a biomarker of PNE allergy; serum levels; and Th1/Th2 cytokine production in supernatants of cultured splenocytes were measured. PNSE treatment significantly attenuated the secretion of anti-Ara h1 antibody, mucosal mast cell degranulation, degree of systemic anaphylaxis, and ear swelling and increased the production of IFN-γ and IL-10, with a decrease in IL-4 secretion. The results of this study show that the allergenicity of PNE could be reduced by germination, which caused downregulation of Th2 lymphocyte activity, systemic anaphylactic response, and mast cell-mediated ear swelling in PNE-sensitized mice.
