Research paper thumbnail of Innovation pedagogy – learning through active multidisciplinary methods

Innovation pedagogy introduces how the development of students' innovation skills from the very beginning of their studies can become possible. The core of innovation pedagogy lies in emphasising interactive dialogue between the educational organization, students, and surrounding working life and society. It aims to develop the student's innovation competencies which are the learning outcomes which refer to knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for the innovation activities to be successful. It is defined as a learning approach that defines in a new way how knowledge is assimilated, produced and used in a manner that can create innovations. The purpose of this study is to first present the concept of innovation pedagogy and later give examples of the methods used in Turku University of Applied Sciences to implement this pedagogical concept into the everyday life of the university. Innovation pedagogy has been developed in Turku University of Applied Sciences where it also forms part of the strategy in the university. The multidisciplinary projects of applied research and development respond to the customer needs and are integrated with education in a flexible way.

Micropiles are typically used for underpinning, whereby a separate load transfer structure is often provided between the micropiles and the existing superstructure. The present article introduces a classification of the various kinds of load transfer structures. In addition, the article proposes a new way of modeling underpinning using an adapted UML (Unified Modeling Language TM) sequence diagram. The adaptation of UML modeling allows the linking of the installation process and its various stages with the structural descriptions of, e.g., structural members and force diagrams. The classification can be used to support planning decisions, or to estimate costs or duration from the owner´s point of view.

Cohesive piles were popular in the 19 century and at the beginning of the 20 century under foundations, where clay layers are more than 15 m thick. End bearing piles became more popular in the 1950 ́s and use of end bearing wood piles continued up to the 1970 ́s until pre-cast concrete piles came into common use. Decay of wood piles has been observed in several cases due to lowering or contaminated ground water. The buildings may settle either due to decaying wood piles or due to settling of cohesive piles, sometimes as a combination of these factors. A decay model has been developed to classify the phenomena in Turku for wood pile foundations, based on observations in the DATU database. The classification model can be utilized when designing micropile types or load transfer structures for underpinning. The type of micropiles and load transfer structures has influence on the costs and duration of underpinning...

In Finnish underpinning, only retrospective analysis of costs has been available for the owner’s decision process. In order to develop tools for pre‐tender cost estimating and for comparison of different design solutions and evaluation of tenders of the underpinning project, two different cost models have been developed for research. In both models developed, the minimum data required is the pile length. In the more detailed model, the assessment is based on the design solution, including known pile types and the load transfer classification. Both models are easy to use, and the percentage of explained variance is fairly good in the more detailed model.
