20th & 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium, 2020

Lund** A joint case-control study in Norway and Sweden on the risk of breast cancer upon longterm use of oral contraceptives (OC) is recently published (I). In Norway detailed information about the use of OC and other potential adverse side-effects were gathered concomitantly. 105 women with breast cancer and 410 age and otherwise matched controls were interviewed according to a specific questionnaire form. 63.3% of all women interviewed were ever users of OC. Data were collected for each continuous period of use of the same brand. Events which may reflect side-effects were found in 55.6% of the 629 periods of use. Most common were increased body weight (17.8%), irregular bleeding (14.0%), nausea {8.9%) and breast tenderness (8.8%). In addition depression, aggressiveness, reduced libido, beadache and migraine were reported. The pattern of sideeffects varied according to the combinations of sexual hor~nes in the different brands of OC. Manifest side-effects and fear of future reactions were the most common reason for stopping OC use, e.g. 31.6 and 7.4% of all periods of use, respectively. The amount of side-effects was higher in the first period of use (62%) than in the second or later periods (48.1%). Likewise side-effects related to 39.6% of all stops in the first as compared to 21.7% upon the second and later periods. These findings probably indicate a selection of longterm users of OC, depending on the experience (and fear) of side-effects in the first period of use. I. Berg~an r P-H. Groopr A. Reunanen and T. Klaukka. Marked and stable variation in the use of antidiabetic drugs has been observed a~ong the Nordic countries. The use of antidiabetic drugs in Sweden and Finland is twice as high as the use in Norway and Denmark and four times as high as in Iceland. The aim of the study was to evaluate possible causes for the variation in the use of antidiabetic drugs. Data was collected from existing studies from the five Nordic countries. Special attention was paid to prevalence of aiahetes, prevalence of risk factors such as age and obesity, therapeutic traditions and reccmmendations for the management of diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes is highest in Finland, consistent with a higher prevalence of obesity in the population aged 45-74 years compared to other Nordic Countries. Even if the Swedish prevalence of diabetes does not reach the sane level as in Finland the prevalence is higher than in Norway and Denmark. Iceland has the lowest prevalence. The age distribution varies between the countries. 15% of the Swedish population is >65 years old ccmpared to 13% in Norway and Denmark and 9% in Finland and Iceland. Higher recummended doses of oral antidiabetics was found in Finland and Sweden than in the other countries, and in agrem, ent with this higher prescribed daily doses of individus~ drugs was found in these two countries. In conclusion, differences in prevalence of diabetes, reosmmendations for the treatment of diabetes and therapeutic traditions may partly explain the great variation in the use of antidiabetic drugs among the Nordic countries. Furthermore, different prevalence of risk factors such as age and obesity, may contribute to explain the differences in prevalence of diabetes.
