The ion density in the cigar-like structure exceeds by more than an order of magnitude that of the background plasma, while the density in the plasma tail outflowing from the cigar-like structure is of the same order as that of the background plasma. The Ba(+) outflow rate is determined. The results agree with observed cloud motion and with the estimates following from Dzubenko et al. (1983).

The motion of the guest (benzene) molecule has been studied through the changes of the frequencies and the shapes of the bands due to CH out-of-plane vibrations. It was found that one of these bands (the one at around 985 cm−1), splits at LNT, the splitting being dependent on the volume of the tetragonal unit cell. From the recorded FT-IR and Raman spectra of these clathrates, we have made an attempt to calculate some of the anharmonicity coefficients, Xij, for the C-H out-of-plane bending vibrations in Ni(NH3)2Ni(CN)4·2C6H6 and Cd(NH3)2Ni(CN)4·2C6H6 Hofmann type clathrates. The interaction of the guest (benzene) molecules in these two lattices has been discussed in terms of the calculated anharmonicity constants and the data were compared with the available data for liquid benzene.

The influence of a gradual loss of the benzene molecules from the host lattice in these partially debenzenated clathrates was studied by infrared spectroscopy. For this purpose, a series of partially debenzenated en-Td-type clathrates was prepared and their infrared spectra recorded. The loss of the benzene from the host lattice did not cause any changes in the frequency of the bands due to the vibrations of the benzene molecules. However, considerable changes in the bands due to the vibrations of the host lattice, M(en)M′(CN)4, were detected. These changes are most evident in the region of the stretching and out-of-plane bending NH2 vibrations. Most of the bands due to these vibrations are no longer present in the vibrational spectra of the “empty clathrates” (clathrates in which the benzene has left the host lattice). One explanation for this behaviour could be the existence of an interaction between the guest molecules and the host lattice.

Clinical and Laboratory Haematology, 1998

IL-6, or cytokines of the IL-6 family using gp130 as transducer chain receptor, have been suggest... more IL-6, or cytokines of the IL-6 family using gp130 as transducer chain receptor, have been suggested to play a role in certain B lymphoid neoplasia. The presence of cell membrane gp80 and gp130 IL-6 receptors was studied in 98 patients with various leukaemia and non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma using flow cytofluorometry and immunohistology. Except neoplasia of immature B cells which expressed neither of the receptors, the majority of B cell tumours expressed one or both of them, mantle cell lymphoma being found to express the highest density of receptors. Using IL-6-dependent XG myeloma cell lines and mAb recognizing various gp80 and gp130 functional epitopes, it has been shown that IL-6 activation leads to a modified expression of some epitopes. In particular, the decrease or the disappearance of a gp130 epitope called A1 signed gp130 dimerization which is the first step of the gp130 activation pathway. Gp80 and gp130 epitope analysis was achieved in 17 of the patients. In four, an epitope phenotype compatible with a cytokine-induced activation was found. The cells of five B-CLL patients which expressed both gp80 and gp130 receptors were incubated with IL-6 to induce activation. In three of the cases they were found to rearrange their receptors in activated forms but not in the two others, showing that cells able to be activated or not can be found. These results confirm that gp130 signalling might play an important role in the pathogenesis of certain B cell neoplasia.

Hydrodynamic and optical properties of dilute solutions of polydecamethylene-terephthaloyldi-p-ox... more Hydrodynamic and optical properties of dilute solutions of polydecamethylene-terephthaloyldi-p-oxybenzoate (P-10-TOB), polypentamethylene-terephthaloyl-dip -oxybenzoate (P-5-TOB) and polytetramethylene-terephthaloyl-dip -oxybenzoate (P-4-TOB) in dichloroacetic and trifluoroacetic acids were investigated by translational diffusion, velocity sedimentation, viscometry and flow birefringence. The results of hydrodynamic investigations are interpreted from the standpoint of theories taking account of the draining effect in macromolecules. It is shown, on the basis of hydrodynamic and optical data, that the equilibrium rigidity of molecules (the Kuhn statistical segment) is several times higher for P-10-TOB, P-5-TOB and P-4-TOB than for polyethyleneterephthalate.

Research paper thumbnail of Kerr effect in solutions of a thermotropically mesogenic alkylene-aromatic polyester

Electric birefringence (EB, Kerr effect) has been investigated for solutions of fractions of ther... more Electric birefringence (EB, Kerr effect) has been investigated for solutions of fractions of thermotropically liquid-crystalline alkylene-aromatic polyester (PE-10) and of its monomer. A very specific dependence of EB on the molecular weight (M) of the polymer was tbund: for low molecular weight substances the Kerr constant is negative, changes its sign with increasing M and, in the range of positive values, increases with M. These data are in quantitative agreement with the dependence of K on M predicted by the EB theory for kinetically rigid worm-like chains in which the longitudinal components of dipole moments of monomer units are "'accumulated" with increasing chain length. The detected relationships show that in PE-10 solutions the Kerr effect is due to the large-scale chain motion in which the behaviour of a dipole molecule is similar to the motion of a kinetically rigid particle rotating as a whole by the action of the field.

AG of high purity and silver or copper doped aluminium was investigated during anodization in an aqueous borate electrolyte (ABE) and solutions of ammonium salicylate and ammonium adiinate in dimethylformamide (DMF) and ethylene-glycol (ffi). The brightness characteristics proved to be different for the aqueous and the non-aqueous electrolytes. For the latter, the AG-brightness was found to be about hundred times higher than that for pure Al in ABE, and depended neither on the ionogen concentration, nor on the metal purity. Moreover, the AC&spectrum in the non-aqueous electrolytes proved to be characteristic for the nature of the solvent (DMF and EG). On the contrary, in ABE the well-known increase of AG-brightness with doped Al was observed, the spectra having been found characteristic for the metal impurity. The findings are explained on the baais of a hypothesis about the origin of luminescent centers. Aocordii to it, both the metal impurities and the ions or molecules from the elcztrolyte can penetrate into the anodic film, acting there as luminescent centers. Brightness and spectral distribution of AG will then be determined by those centers, which supply the prevailing light flux.

At low anodizing cd, j , the capacitance was found to decrease with increase of pH of the forming solution. This dependece was proved to be due to both the oxide film greater thickness and smaller dielectric constant e of the film at higher pH and lower j . The relation e(pH, j ) indicates corresponding differences in structure or composition (or both) of the barrier-type alumina films formed under different conditions. Some points of the dielectric behaviour of the system Al/Al 2 O 3 /electrolyte were also investigated and compared with the behaviour of Al/Al 2 O 3 /Al sandwiches.

In immunoblots, MAbs A1D8 and A5B6 reacted only with full length molecules of PVA coat protein (CP). Pepscan tests with overlapping octapeptides representing the whole sequence of PVA CP showed that the epitope detected by MAb A5B6 is contained in its N-terminal octapeptide. MAbs A9A4, A3H4 and A6B8 reacted with CP molecules that lacked about 5 kD of sequence at their end(s) and detected epitopes at residues 52 to 62,64 to 73 and 75 to 82 respectively, all of which lie in the protease-resistant core of the CP. The epitope which reacts with MAb A3H4 is in a region predicted to be hydrophobic and is not detected in intact virus particles, indicating it is a cryptotope. In contrast, MAbs A6B8 and A9A4 reacted with freshly purified PVA particles but more strongly with partially degraded ones. Pepscan tests w.th polyclonal antibodies to PVA isolate B 11 identified five additional immunogenic sequences in PVA CP and showed that regions at the N-termini of the intact and core molecules are immunodominant. PVA isolate B11 was not transmitted by aphids, and its CP N-terminal octapeptide contains the sequence DAS, which is associated with aphid-nontransmissibility in other potyviruses. MAb A5B6, which detects this region, reacted strongly in ELISA with three out of four other aphid-non-transmissible PVA isolates but only weakly with three aphid-transmissible ones, suggesting that differences in N-terminal sequence may underlie most of the differences in aphid transmissibility.
