Research paper thumbnail of Writing on and Reading about Cultures: Ethnography as a Literary Response to a Scientific Challenge

Taking the ethnographical text as a paradigm, the principal problems arising from its reading make it as tricky to analyze as the one––already well-studied––of the writing. It is shown that, both in the writing and the reading, the textual transmission of knowledge implies an important imaginative and linguistic effort that has some similarities with what can be observed in the writing and reading of literature.

Research paper thumbnail of The evolution of VET systems as a combination of economic, social and educational aims. The case of Swiss VET

Hungarian Educational Research Journal

These different aims find their roots in different socio-cultural and economic contexts and their importance in the functioning of the systems evolves according to the times. Our contribution proposes a reflection on the centrality of the notion of aims in order to better understand and describe the functioning of VET systems. By adopting an exploratory approach based on discourse analysis, we will show the interest in using this notion to build a theoretical framework that facilitates international comparisons between VET systems and also the description of their evolution from the past to the future. To exemplify the relevance of this exploratory approach, the contribution will propose a description of the evolution of the Swiss VET system from 1880 up to 2030, based on the articulation of economic...

However, materializing this postulate still poses problems at the political and institutional level, where the fragmentation of educational system due to Switzerland's federal structure does not foster wide-scale reform; in certain programs at the secondary school level, where disciplinary logic remains predominant; and in teachers' everyday practice, which is only slowly adopting an interdisciplinary posture. Following a presentation of the specifics of the Swiss educational system and an attempt to define the notion of interdisciplinarity, this contribution will offer an analysis of developments in the discourse surrounding interdisciplinarity in Switzerland from the 1970s onwards and present the most noteworthy initiatives in this field.

This is reflected in sometimes significant differences between the cantons, particularly with regard to participation in dual VET. Based on a historical reconstruction of the institutionalization process of the Swiss VET system, our contribution first explains the institutional conditions under which cantonal differences are possible; secondly describes their evolution; and finally identifies the main factors which influence their appearance. In more detail, our contribution begins with a reconstruction of the development of VET in Switzerland and in three cantons (ZH, GE, TI) during the decisive period for the Swiss VET system from 1950 to 1970. This reconstruction is based firstly on a historical analysis of sources (laws, messages, statistical data...

Beside the Confederation and the Cantons, the third main actor in this institutionalisation process can be identified in professional associations in the craft sector. On the contrary, trade unions play a minor role in the all process. The paper presents the main reasons that could explain the discreet presence of trade unions in the process of institutionalization of the domain and analyses the consequences of this on the first laws on VET and on the successive evolution to the present day.

The author emphasizes a certain dilution of the notion of fiction, today commonly used as simply synonymous to “construction.” Certain aspects stress that link to unexplored notions of fiction, in an effort to define more sharply the modalities of construction of knowledge in human sciences and to explicate the epistemological implications of the constructivist approach that, during those last decades, seems to prevail in this area of research.

Some decades earlier, from 1850 on, Switzerland witnessed the development of its official statistics. However, experts and politicians had to wait until 1935 for a first complete and updated set of national data concerning the VET domain. The analysis of this delay shows that the development of statistics on VET had to overcome several difficulties: not only technical problems of data collection due to the youth of the discipline of statistics, but also problems raised by an unstable and evolving domain, requiring the redefinition of certain statistical categories. For instance, the category of 'apprentice', with its ambiguous identity between worker and learner, caused major problems for data collection in those days. Only the implementation of the first federal law of 1930 provided a stable framework for the development o...

Firstly, from a historical viewpoint, the importance of the constructivist paradigm, which started a profound revision of the disciplinary frontiers and opened a dialogue between theses disciplines, is stressed. Secondly, an important feature that these three disciplines seem to share is underlined: history, literature, and philosophy require linguistic innovation; often their aim is to find new words for expressing something that has not been said before."
