Este estudo defende que o comportamento aleatório pode tornar-se legítimo objeto de estudo de uma... more Este estudo defende que o comportamento aleatório pode tornar-se legítimo objeto de estudo de uma ciência do comportamento. Analisamos inicialmente algumas considerações que B. F. Skinner formulou sobre o comportamento aleatório em suas Contingências do Reforço. Segundo Skinner (1969/1975), o comportamento aleatório "não apresenta interesse como processo de comportamento". Apresentamos uma rigorosa definição de "comportamento aleatório". Sustentamos que o comportamento aleatório pode constituir objeto de análise funcional, examinando alguns estudos empíricos que se têm conduzido sobre o comportamento aleatório. Apresentamos ainda algumas dificuldades empíricas e teóricas que podem afetar as investigações nessa área. Concluímos que o comportamento aleatório é um fascinante e importante tópico para uma completa ciência do comportamento.

The present paper reviews the concept of operant behavior and emphasizes that differentiation is the behavioral process that demonstrates an operant relation. Differentiation is conceived as change in the overlap between two probability distributions: the distribution of reinforcement probability as a function of some response property (S distribution) and the probability distribution of the response property itself (R distribution). This concept implies that the differentiation process can be measured only if S distribution and R distribution are both established on the same response property. O objetivo desse estudo foi investigar se a variabilidade comportamental pode ser funcao da histo... more O objetivo desse estudo foi investigar se a variabilidade comportamental pode ser funcao da historia de reforcamento. Ratos foram submetidos a reforcamento contingente a emissao de sequencias de quatro respostas de pressao a barra (barra direita -De barra esquerda - E). Na fase CRF, reforcava-se toda sequencia; nas demais fases, o reforcamento foi intermitente, sendo contingente a variabilidade da sequencia (VAR) ou independente desta (ACO). A variabilidade foi considerada em relacao a distribuicao de respostas D ou E, dentro da sequencia. Metade dos sujeitos foi exposta a essas contingencias na ordem CRF-VAR-CRF-ACO-CRF-VAR (grupo I) e os demais a CRF-ACO-CRF-VAR-CRF-ACO (grupo II). Os resultados mostraram que os indices de variacao foram sempre altos nas fases VAR. Nas fases CRF e ACO, o comportamento foi pouco variavel quando essas contingencias foram implantadas antes de VAR e intermediarios quando estabelecidas apos VAR.
