Agricultural ecosystems management is directly connected with the biotic part of the soil, which contains diverse type of efficient microbes with beneficial effects on soil quality, soil health, as well as growth, yield and grape and wine quality. Within a given soil type, resident plants exert selective forces on soil microorganisms, shaping their structure. At the same time, plants are also sensitive to microbial activity and may experience either enhanced or compromised performance depending on the activities of associated microbes. Furthermore, soil microbes possess novel enzymes for scavenging and releasing nutrients from organic to mineral forms. The exudation and re-uptake of compounds by p...

The area studied is in Sicily (Italy), and two stands were compared 40 years after planting. The differences among soil profile developments in the two stands were investigated by chemical and biochemical methods to understand the different levels at which the processes of pedogenesis acted in the study area. The chapter analyzes some chemical and spectroscopic characteristics of HAs, separated from two selected pedons. The results showed that the evolution of soils differed under the two tree stands, both in the formation of different humus forms and in different C storage in the forest floors. The HA chemical composition showed differences in the interactions between HAs and inorganic matter in relation to the tree species and depth. Because the pedogenetic factors were the same for the two pedons and the HA extracting procedure adopted was the same for all samples, the data suggest a different role for the microflora and plant coverage in the soil profile evolution of the two stands, which could address the pedogenesis process.

This 2 local cultivar is characterised by a high nutraceutical compounds content showing anti-inflammatory, anti-cholesterol, anticancer and antioxidant properties. As all vegetable crops and Allium spp., 'Rossa di Tropea' onion is affected by several viruses. Among these, the species Onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV, genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae), represents the most limiting biotic stress, inducing severe symptoms. OYDV effect on tissues architecture in whole bulbs was investigated using magnetic resonance microimaging (MRI) technique, which allows the interior of samples to be imaged noninvasively and non-destructively and yields quantitative information on physico-chemical parameters describing water mobility (T1 and T2 relaxation times). The use of such tool allowed to determine how OYDV alters plant physiology by inducing water accumulation in bulb tissues as well as causing ultrastructural modifications of cell wall, highlighted by MRI. All these effects resulted in an increase of free water in plant tissues, and consequently relevant water losses during post-harvest storage, seriously affecting bulb quality, marketability and shelf life.

It comprises knowledge about SOM properties from different perspectives and their connection with the SOM biodegradability. The highly complex structure of SOM made necessary the search for new methods that can report the SOM chemical, physic-chemistry, thermal, and biological properties in order to evaluate the C sequestration capacity in base on the concept of SOM quality and its resistance to be degraded. Calorimetry can play an important role in the assessment of the biological stabilization of SOM since it can directly measure the CO2 and heat rates of SOM decomposition to yield calorespirometric ratios of the SOM biodegradation processes. Calorespirometric ratios are linked to the nature of the substrate being degraded and can inform about changes in SOM nature after a ce...
