The research covered the hysteresis of pretravel of one-stage triggering probes equipped with a switching transducer (represented by TP6 probe), and two-stage probes equipped with a piezoelectric transducer (e.g. TP200 probe). The effects of stylus length, measurement pressure and approach speed to the measured surface have been included in the performed tests. The variance analysis methods have been used to evaluate the effects. The results, obtained in various conditions and using different probes, have been compared. As a result, optimum values of tested parameters have been estimated, as far as they concern the operation accuracy of the probe.

Research paper thumbnail of Two-Axial Measurement of the Angular Microdeflection of a Laser Beam Using One Single-Axis Sensor

The majority of current methods for measuring the angular deflection of a laser beam enable measu... more The majority of current methods for measuring the angular deflection of a laser beam enable measurement only in one selected plane. However, there are tasks in which measurements of laser beam deflections in 3D are required. In this paper, we present a way of enabling two-axial measurements of the deflection of a beam based on a single-axis sensor. The key idea is to direct a laser beam alternately into one of two arms of a measurement system. In the first arm, the beam is transmitted directly to the angular sensor, while in the second, the beam is directed to the sensor via a special optical element that rotates the plane of the beam deflection; in other words, this element changes the deflection in the horizontal plane into a deflection in the vertical plane, and vice versa. To alternate the path of the beam, a variable phase retarder and a polarising beamsplitter are used. The proposed technique is experimentally verified, and the results confirm its effectiveness.

The concept is based on measurements of the distance between reference and triggering points in various directions. The reference points are established by the rotation axis of a precise rotary table. The advantage of this method relies on easy realisation with application of a commercial device for roundness error measurement. The accuracy of the presented method is much higher in comparison with the existing procedures of CMM probes calibration. The mathematical principle of the method has been presented and used for evaluation of its uncertainty. The validity of the method was experimentally confirmed by means of one-and two-stage type probes.

A design of a new, absolute sensor for measurement of an angular micro-displacement is presented.... more A design of a new, absolute sensor for measurement of an angular micro-displacement is presented. In this sensor deflections of incident laser beam generate changes of the constant of the interference fringes that are created by the double arm special interferometer. Fringe constant is determined using a CCD camera and proposed analysis algorithms. Sensor’s operating principle and metrological properties are presented. Sensor was tested using reference interferometer. Obtained measurement uncertainty is equal to ±10 μrad in the multi-milliradian range. The concept of a two-sensor system for increasing twice the measuring range is presented.

Research paper thumbnail of Interference fringe detection system for distance measuring interferometer

Optics & Laser Technology, 2012

A novel photodetection system for a homodyne distance measuring interferometer by means of fringe... more A novel photodetection system for a homodyne distance measuring interferometer by means of fringe counting method is presented. The system is based on applying compact size integrated photodetector operating with fringe pattern having fixed, finite period. 13-element integrated photodiode arranged in novel signal processing scheme receives interference fringes movement. Additional lens is used to adjust the fringe period to photoelements' distances. Due to the proposed configuration of the photoelement's signal processing and the applied lens the system has reduced sensitivity to interference fringe period errors caused by the angular misalignment of interfering beams. The theoretical analysis and experimental verification of the system metrological feasibilities are presented. Comparison of performance of examples of standard and novel detection systems is shown finally.

To decrease interferometer sensitivity to inaccuracy of the grating guide, application of divergent light beam is proposed. The effect of the interferometer geometry on the direction and constant of fringes is analyzed. Comparison is drawn between results of applying plane and spherical wavefronts. The advantages of spherical wavefront application are theoretically evaluated and experimentally proved. An acceptable value of the angular instability of the grating illuminated by spherical wavefront is equal to about +/- 3 arcmin.

A novel laser diode (LD) wavelength stabilization system based on an optical wedge interferometer... more A novel laser diode (LD) wavelength stabilization system based on an optical wedge interferometer is presented. The proposed system uses an interference pattern from an external wedge etalon to detect frequency changes via a differential photodetector. Based on the etalon photodetector output signal, the feedback electronic circuit controls the LD current so as to obtain the LD wavelength as close as possible to the value set as a reference. Theoretical basis, design of the prototype system and metrological feasibilities of the device are presented. The absence of wavelength modulation during frequency stabilization, simplicity and low cost are the main advantages of the proposed technique.

Regression analysis method is applied for data transforming and error evaluation in sine-approximation method (SAM) for the calibration of vibration pick-ups by laser interferometry. To make a more valuable comparison of this modified SAM with other techniques, i.e. fringe counting method (FCM) and minimum point method, the resolution of the measuring system is increased by using double optical path difference homodyne interferometer. Additionally the uncertainty of FCM is suppressed by implementing the procedure of fringe phase analysis in the turn points of the vibration cycle. Theoretical analysis and the exemplary experimental results for all applied methods are given. The expanded measurement uncertainties about 0.2% of acceleration measurement and about 0.5% of sensitivity measurement (with a 99% confidence level) have been obtained.

Research paper thumbnail of Laser beam angular stabilization system based on a compact interferometer and a precise double-wedge deflector

Review of Scientific Instruments, 2018

To increase the laser beam pointing stability required for precise interferometric measurements, ... more To increase the laser beam pointing stability required for precise interferometric measurements, we designed an active laser beam angular stabilization system. We used two recently proposed techniques: an interferometric measurement method of laser beam angular deflection which allows compact sensor design and a double wedge-prism beam deflector for precise laser beam steering. Our system provides long-term angular stabilization independently in the horizontal and the vertical planes, providing a hundredfold reduction of the output beam deviations. First, we describe the compact sensor setup with a new measurement algorithm prepared specifically for our stabilization system. Then, the system is introduced, and experimental evaluation is described. The test results show a good performance for the proposed design. We reached a reduction in beam angular deviations amplitude down to 100 nrad/h (in terms of double standard deviation of beam fluctuations).

To decrease interferometer sensitivity to inaccuracy of the grating guide, a laser diode beam is focused on the grating surface. The effect of the interferometer geometry on the direction and period of the fringes is analyzed. In addition, the influence of the system geometry on the optical path difference is evaluated. Methods of adjustment of the fringe direction and period and also the zero value of the optical path difference in the interferometer are proposed. The theoretical analysis is verified experimentally by analyzing separately the influence of selected geometrical parameters on fringe direction and fringe constant. The experimental results are compared with regression models obtained by theoretical analysis. More than 92% results variability is caused by the theoretically predicted model of functions.
