We tested the existence of these hybrid work orientations in a sample of 959 adults aged from 18 to 71 years old (M = 40.61, SD = 9.54). A cluster analysis showed that the best result consisted of four profiles: “Career-Calling”, “Career-Job”, “Pure Job”, and “Indifference”. Theoretical and practical implications of profile approach to the study of work orientations are discussed at the end.

Research paper thumbnail of Quality apprenticeships: a manual for placement providers

ApprenticeshipQ, 2020

The project “Mainstreaming Procedures for Quality Apprenticeships in Educational Organisations an... more The project “Mainstreaming Procedures for Quality Apprenticeships in Educational Organisations and Enterprises” (ApprenticeshipQ) will support educational institutions and placement providers to offer high-quality education to their apprentices. We consider educational institutions here as Higher Vocational Education and Training Institutions, and Professional Higher Education Institutions as Universities of Applied Sciences and Colleges, as well as Academic/ Research-oriented Universities). The project’s proposed assessment of quality will make these processes more manageable and will benefit all stakeholders. These benefits include lifelong learning for teachers, professors and tutors, enhancements for placement providers, improvement of apprentice’s skills development and overall higher quality of the learning experience. The activities of ApprenticeshipQ will strengthen the cooperation and networking between educational institutions and their training partners’ site (placement providers), by providing them with innovative practices to enhance or establish quality management documented information that was developed and tested during the project. The aim is to develop management tools that support educational institutions and placement providers to offer and direct high-quality apprenticeships. These management tools shall be recognised as a model to improve the quality of the apprenticeships and will serve as a basis for the development of formal international standards and guidelines. This guide is structured as follows: The guide starts by giving an introduction to the ApprenticeshipQ project, containing definitions of the research, which led to this guide. Guidance on how to use this guide follows. This section provides a more detailed description of the present document and its objectives. The quality criteria developed in the project are listed with the corresponding measurement indicators in chapter 5. Each criterion is supplemented by a short description and an example. The examples are taken from their own project qualitative interview survey with numerous placement providers. Also, a link to documented information is provided for each quality criteria. How these criteria can be implemented is explained in Chapter 6 using a PDCA (PlanDo-Check-Act-Cycle) model

Transport in Human Scale Cities, 2021

The (re)turn to human scale cities is inseparable from the shift of mobility paradigms towards su... more The (re)turn to human scale cities is inseparable from the shift of mobility paradigms towards sustainable modes of transport. As car dominance steadily transformed what was once public space into road space (Sheller and Urry, 2003), growing congestion and pollution have decreased the quality of life and equity among citizens. Non-motorized transport, and especially cycling, is associated with higher levels of happiness and emotional wellbeing (Zhu and Fan, 2018). It has been framed as a means to democratize the city (Cox, 2019) and as a convivial tool that increases opportunities for social relationships (Illich, 1973, 1974), in addition to other widely recognized environmental and economic benefits. Cycling, therefore, establishes and ensures mobility on a human scale (Quee and Bijlsma, 2018). Nevertheless, despite the growing policy and academic interest in cycling, when compared with other modes of transport little attention has been paid to it (Heinen et al., 2010), and analysis and planning methods have not kept pace with demand (Kuzmyak et al., 2014). Promoting a modal shift towards cycling is a complex process, particularly in cities dominated by the car-centric paradigm, which cannot reproduce the path of champion cycling cities such as Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Starter cycling cities combine poor cycling conditions with low cycling rates (Dufour, 2010), where the lack of cycling culture and technical know-how limits strategies to sporadic interventions (such as hastily planned infrastructure or symbolic bike sharing systems). Long-term commitment is also weakened as cycling provision lacks the high profile of other infrastructure investments (such as, for example, the metro) and is associated with being 'cheap' (Aldred, 2013).

Research paper thumbnail of Additional Evidence That Common Low-Level Features Of Individual Audio Frames Are Not Representative Of Music Genre

Proceedings of the SMC Conferences, Jul 21, 2010

The Bag-of-Frames (BoF) approach has been widely used in music genre classification. In this appr... more The Bag-of-Frames (BoF) approach has been widely used in music genre classification. In this approach, music genres are represented by statistical models of low-level features computed on short frames (e.g. in the tenth of ms) of audio signal. In the design of such models, a common procedure in BoF approaches is to represent each music genre by sets of instances (i.e. frame-based feature vectors) inferred from training data. The common underlying assumption is that the majority of such instances do capture somehow the (musical) specificities of each genre, and that obtaining good classification performance is a matter of size of the training dataset, and fine-tuning feature extraction and learning algorithm parameters. We report on extensive tests on two music databases that contradict this assumption. We show that there is little or no benefit in seeking a thorough representation of the feature vectors for each class. In particular, we show that genre classification performances are similar when representing music pieces from a number of different genres with the same set of symbols derived from a single genre or from all the genres. We conclude that our experiments provide additional evidence to the hypothesis that common low-level features of isolated audio frames are not representative of music genres.
