Apart from the main focus of producing oil and gas products, such uses will be considered as an added value in the overall assessment and evaluation of oil shale industry. It is possible to develop suitable equipment for the production of oil from oil shale, but with different conditions to control the temperature of the residue of retorted oil shale to enable the calcium carbonate to dissociate into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide which are the main materials for the production of sodium carbonate, ammonium sulfate and potassium sulfate. A schematic flow diagram will be presented to form the basis for the construction of a pilot plant that utilizes the process of producing oil on one fold and the production of the said products on the other fold. Further uses of spent shale in ...

This paper presents an experimental study on the identification and quantification of surface cracking of concrete heated to different temperatures ranging from 105 to 1250oC. In addition to the quantification of the residual compressive strengths of concrete after high temperature exposure, both initial surface absorption and total porosity were measured. The crack density was determined using a flat bed scanner and then images were treated using paint shop pro program. The total porosity was obtained using ASTM boiling. The mechanical properties of concrete were largely affected by temperatures beyond 500°C and were very feeble when temperatures exceeded 1000°C. The surface cracks' density, initial surface absorption and total porosity by boiling methods gave a rapid indication on concrete durability.

Research paper thumbnail of Modeling the Influence of Limestone Filler on Concrete: A Novel Approach for Strength and Cost

Jordan Journal of Civil Engineering, 2009

Production of composite cements has caused a necessary shift in the manufacture process used in the cement industry. Now, it is known that the separate grinding and mixing technology is more convenient in order to produce these cements, called market-oriented or tailor-made cements. However, their optimum formulations require the help of methods of experimental design. In this study, the incorporation of limestone fines and their optimal is analyzed in concrete, where Portland cement was replaced by up to 42 %. The fillers were chosen to be of various particle sizes. The resulting concretes are compared for compressive strength, cement consumption and economic viability. The results obtained indicate the advantage of incorporation of limestone fines in the concretes, as for the same compressive strength at 28 days, savings up to 23% in the consumption of cem...

In order to evaluate the coupled effect of high temperature and heating time on the residual strength of concrete, a series of compressive and indirect tensile tests was performed on normal and high strength concretes. The effect of incorporating polypropylene fibers in high strength concretes was also investigated. Cubical concrete specimens were exposed to different target high temperatures (100, 300, 500 and 700 oC) for 3, 6 and 9 hours and then cooled in air. Compressive and flexural strengths of these concrete samples were compared with each other and with the unheated samples. Experimental results indicate that concrete strength decreases with increasing temperature and heating time. The grade of concrete affects the residual compressive and flexural strength; the decrease in the strength of ordinar...

The probability density functions of both variables were developed; then the stability of slopes is determined by employing the Swedish method of slices. It is concluded that shear strength and the uncertainty in evaluating the factor of safety for the stability of slopes follow normal distributions.

Development of SCC in Jordan is highly needed to overcome many problems in the construction sector. Trial concrete mixes have been carried aiming at studying fresh and hardened concrete properties. Local crushed limestone and Portland cement were used in addition to fly ash and limestone powder. Additives in the form of carboxylated ether based super plasticizers and viscosity modifying agents were employed. Properties of fresh concrete were evaluated using slump cone, L-box, U-box, V-funnel tests and sieve stability analysis. Performance of hardened concrete is determined by the classical strength tests. It is expected that results of this study will introduce a guidelines and recommendations to serve the concrete industry sector in general and to ready mix plants in particular.

Realizing the objectives of this research and with the scope of this study, the use of processed natural and locally available raw materials were used. The physical and mechanical properties of such materials have been recorded and documented. The experimental investigation has dealt with the fresh properties of the concrete mixes as well as the mechanical properties of the hardened concrete by testing specimens in compression, direct tension, splitting and flexure. The obtained results have been compared with the well know empirical code formulas. The color of the produced concrete can only be judged by inspection. An added value to this study is an attempt to outline the cost analysis by using the coloring pigments in lieu of using the similar imported ones. In addition to that The microstruct...

It is applied on specimens of normal concrete (NSC), high strength concrete (HSC) and high strength concrete with Polypropylene fibers. Results obtained are compared with the peer values of wet concrete ratios of air voids. As compared with other ASTM procedures, it is concluded that this method may have superiority over other methods due to its simplicity, low cost, less time and no need of skilled technicians. It is recommended to be used for hardened concrete as well as rock specimens.
