Methods: Retrospective data analysis of 118 consecutive patients who underwent mechanical valve replacement. The early and late morbidity and mortality were analyzed at our institution, from January 2001 to December 2008. Results: Hospital mortality was 2.5% (3 patients). Complications recorded during the follow up study include: prosthetic valve endocarditis (3.4%), bleeding (3.4%), stroke (3.1%), and reoperation (.8%). No structural valvular dysfunction and no valvular thromboses were reported. Conclusion: Our data show that valves replacement with mechanical valve may be performed with low morbidity and mortality.

The tricuspid valve and the right ventricle were small. Successful surgical repair was performed, with significant improvement of the patient's clinical status. The use of exercise testing with pulse oxymetry monitoring aided in the decision of timing for closure of the iatrogenically created atrial septal defect.

The early and late morbidity and mortality were analyzed at our institution, from January 2001 to December 2008. Early and Mid-term Evaluation of Aortic Valve Replacement 503 Our results showed hospital mortality was 3.1% (2 patients). Complications recorded during the follow up study include: prosthetic valve endocarditis (6.2%), bleeding (6.2%), stroke (3.1%), and reoperation (1.6%). No structural valvular dysfunction and no valvular thromboses were reported, and we concluded that aortic valve replacement with mechanical valve may be performed with low morbidity and mortality.

Acute myocardial infarction was induced in 99, adult (250-350 g BW), male nude rats strain Crl:NIH-Fox1 RNU .

Both patients presented with angina pain. None of the 2 patients had pressure symptoms (cough, shortness of breath or superior vena cava syndrome) or Myasthenia Gravis symptoms. Total thymectomy with dissection of perithymic fat was performed on both cases. No radiotherapy was given. No recurrence of the tumor was seen in 2 years follow up. These cases are presented to emphasize the occurrence of this tumor.

Complete blood count, total and differential leukocyte counts, plasma total protein, albumin, glucose, urea, creatinine, total bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase were determined before (time zero, T0), 1, and 5 days following experimental induction of AMI. Lactate dehydrogenase, creatinine kinase (CK), and creatinine kinase MB fraction (CK-MB) were determined at T0, 6, and 24 h following AMI. There were no significant changes in the hematological parameters at any sampling point. Among all plasma biochemical parameters studied, only CK and CK-MB were significantly elevated 6 h following induction of AMI. These data will aid scientists and researchers in the interpretation and better application of their results when using nude rats for AMI studies.

Twenty-two adult, male nude rats (strain Crl:NIH-Fox1 RNU ) were used to induce diabetes using streptozotocin. A single, 150 mg/kg STZ was injected intraperitoneally. Severity of the induced diabetic state was assessed by daily monitoring of body weight, clinical signs, and blood glucose levels. C-peptide was assessed before ADSC injection (T0) and at 3, 5, and 21 days after ADSC injection. Eight rats (40%) developed DM within 24 h after STZ injection. Of the eight rats that developed DM, five were given 2 million freshly prepared ADSC intraventricularly under echocardiography guidance 10 days after STZ injection and three were only given sterile saline for comparison. Surviving rats were humanly sacrificed 21 days after ADSC injection. The average weight of diabetic rats decreased significantly after STZ injection. ADSC injection had no effect on the body weight of rats. Non-fasting serum glucose levels increased significantly in both groups. In diabetic rats, C-peptide decreased significantly before ADSC injection and seemed to return to normal 21 days after ADSC administration. Results of this preliminary study might suggest a beneficial effect of using hADSC for the treatment of STZ-induced diabetes in adult nude rats.

The therapeutic effects of Sidr honey on second-intention healing of contaminated full-thickness ... more The therapeutic effects of Sidr honey on second-intention healing of contaminated full-thickness skin wounds in dogs were investigated. Povidone-iodine was used as a standard treatment and served as a control. Healthy adult (two-to-four-year-old) mongrels, comprising six dogs and two bitches, were divided into four equal groups in order to obtain multi-aged wounds at the end of the study. Four 2cm × 2cm full-thickness skin wounds were created on both sides of the back area of each dog under general anaesthesia adhering to aseptic technique. Contaminated wounds were then divided into two treatment groups: Group 1, Sidr honey treated (right side wounds) and group 2, povidone-iodine treated (left side wounds). All wounds were evaluated grossly daily at the time of treatment application and digitally photographed once every week. Images were analysed using ImageJ software. The parameters of unhealed wound area and length of advancing epithelium were obtained. The epithelialisation areas, percentage of wound area, and wound contraction rate were then calculated. No significant differences were found between the two treatment groups in any of the parameters studied. Overall, both honey treated and iodine treated wounds healed well within the time period of the study (28 d). However, the study showed a beneficial effect of Sidr honey on second-intention healing of full thickness contaminated wounds in healthy dogs and the effect was comparable to that of Povidone iodine.

Pulmonary rheumatoid nodule is one of the most common extra-articular manifestations of which can result in spontaneous pneumothorax, especially on patients on methotrexate or leflunomide treatment. We present the complicated course of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis in whom a recurrent right side spontaneous pneumothorax had occurred, which had been treated with insertion of multiple chest tubes and chemical pleurodesis.

In the past few years, however, it has been increasingly challenged by percutaneous coronary intervention. The increasing tendency to report interventional treatments being based on "patient or physician preference" is both inadequate and inappropriate, discussion of all interventions by a multidisciplinary team should be a minimum standard of care. In this report we present a patient with coronary artery disease who underwent coronary catheterization and stenting many times, and finally the decision was to do a coronary artery bypass grafting in which the saphenous vein anastomosis to the distal right coronary artery was done over an old stent.
