LULC mapping and change detection provides land planner and environmental scientists a better understanding of the land surface processes occurring in a given landscape so that they can come up with a strategy for sustainable development keeping degradation of natural environment from anthropogenic activities at bay. This study utilized remote sensing data products and software’s for LULC mapping and LULC change. Landsat data has been utilized in ENVI for the classification of LULC and LULC change detection during the period 1991-2020. The LULC classification was achieved through Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) which is a widely preferred classificatory method. Image change detection was achieved through ENVI thematic change workflow. On top of that ArcGIS version 10.2 was used for preparing all map layouts. Results reveal that the study area has undergone s...

A health facility is a facility where quality health care access is provided. The number and quality of health facilities in a country or region is common measures of that area’s prosperity and quality of life. Therefore, health infrastructure is one of socio economic indicators of an area. As per the guideline of the WHO, the Doctor Population ratio should be 1:1000 but in case of India it is very pathetic as the ratio stands at 1:1456 (Economic survey 2019-20) and the state of Assam is more pathetic i.e 1:1800. A health status of a region is dependent on the health care availability provided in the region. The district Kokrajhar is situated in the westernmost part of Assam and is lacking far behind in health care facilities as compared to other districts of the state. Most of the families belong to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category and their PCI is also one of the lowest. The reason for poor health car...

Landsat images were utilized for LST retrieval, land-use land-cover (LULC) classification and the normalized difference built-up index mapping. Surface Energy Balance Algorithms for Land and support vector machine methods were used in the study. Results showed that the city has gone through massive changes in its LULC pattern with a high degree of urbanization during the period 1992-2015. The built-up area (BUA) increased to 87.8 km 2 in 2015 from 11.6 km 2 in 1992 while vegetation decreased from 143.3 to 76.6 km 2. Open spaces and water bodies decreased from 14.5 to 5 km 2 and to 6.6 km 2 from 6.7 km 2 , respectively. Conversely, an increasing trend of LST was observed. The mean LST which was 18.5 °C in 1992 rose to 29.03 °C in 2015. Linear regression used in quantifying the relationship between urbanization and LST showed a positive relationship between LST and BUAs in the city.

The conflict which erupted between the Bodos and the Adivashis during the nineties and again between the Bodos and the emigrant Muslims in the beginning of 21st century displaced more than 300,000 and 400,000 people respectively from their habitats, forcing them to stay in the temporary relief camps in the most dehumanized conditions. These groups of people who were displaced due to ethnic conflict were not given the status of refugee, as they had not crossed any international border. Therefore they were deprived from receiving the assistance and protection that the refugees receive world over. As per the guideline of the United Nations, to be recognized as refugee, one has to cross the international border and live in the relief camps. The significance of the paper is that the conflict between the c...

The Santal colony was created way back in the year 1881 with Thakurpur under the then Dingdinga Gaon Panchayat as it’s headquarter. The term Thakurpur means ‘Village of God’. The Santal Colony Tribal Block has been upgraded to a full-fledged Colony by the Assam government on 24 August 1977 with 57,930 bighas of land and has been renamed as Santal Colony Tribal Block. Today, the Santal Colony Tribal Block is comprised of 45 villages with it’s headquarter at Grahampur. The Santal Colony Tribal Block is populated by various communities such as Santals, Oraons, Mundas, Rabhas, Telis, Bengalis etc and majority of the Santals are the followers of Christianity in the colony. In the beginning this colony was dominated by two major communities such as Bodos and Santals. But the conflict between the Bodos and the Santals in the western pa...

Of these, the cropping pattern is one such indicator that signifies how developed the farming system of a region is. To assess the cropping pattern, a number of statistical indices are available—cropping intensity, crop combination, crop concentration, and crop diversification. This research seeks to evaluate the cropping pattern in Assam, India and examines the status of its agricultural sector. It was found that the cropping intensity increased at a gradual rate of 3% per decade. A total of nine statistical indices were used to estimate crop diversification. These indices were compared amongst themselves to determine the most optimal method for the study area. It was found that the ogive and entropy methods were best suited to Assam in an evaluation of its crop diversification. Further, these ...

Educational Inequality is the unequal distribution of educational attainment including educational opportunities and achievement within a particular region. The educational attainment between men and women always varies in our society. The literacy gap between male and female is not only found in Dhubri district alone but in the state of Assam as well. The educational achievement and work participation of women is less than men in the Dhubri district of Assam. The educational achievement and work participation gap between male and female are very high in the district of Dhubri as compared to the other districts of the state. This is mainly because of various factors such as socio-cultural background of the communities; limited access to high quality education, School environment, lack of awareness etc. The study area is populated by various communities such as Muslims, Bengalis, Rabhas, Garos, Bodos, Raj...
