This purpose is in alignment with the Portuguese National Health Service pillars that has established health care services as an universal service for all population. Despite there have been improvements on the national health care services, access to health care services continues to be an inequality issue in the Portuguese society. In the mainland, health services are clustered at the littoral while depopulated interior regions still suffer from lack of prompt specialized and adequate health services, especially in urgent situations. The present study, supported by data from two last census (2001 and 2011), focuses on how mortality is related to health services distribution – facilities and professionals – and how populations’ characteristics influence this situation. The results clearly exhibit a strong association between mortality and health services distribution, an association that is stronger in aged and illiterate populations. These results also suggest that public policies design should be reformulated according to the specificities and needs of each region population. This is a relevant issue to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, namely to accomplish the SDG 10: “Reduce inequalities within and among countries”.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development defines the goal SDG3 as “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”. The promotion of health equity faces challenges of political, social, economic and environmental nature, which are interrelated and influenced by environmental and socioeconomic determinants. Health determinants are intrinsically linked with all SDGs, thus, this work proposes a tailored made index SEHVI - SocioEconomic Health Vulnerability Index aiming to analyse the Portuguese population health and well-being in a quantitative manner.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In this context, health care access equity in mainland Portugal continues to be a challenge for public health policies, with a littoral territory where health services are concentrated and interior depopulated zones, stripped of health services and isolated in physical and social terms. Based on 2011 data from PORDATA , the present article studies how mortality is related to the distribution of health services - namely hospital infrastructures, health centres and health professionals - and with population characteristics related to illiteracy and ageing. The results show a strong association between mortality and the distribution of health services, highlighting increasing mortality in the context of decreasing health services, worsening when related to population illiteracy and ageing. Results reveal the importance of...

Nowadays, children under 6 years old become more interested in TV, computers and in Internet which can lead to difficulty falling asleep. Parent knowledge about child sleep hygiene can influence parent capacity to promote healthy sleep habits, and should be supported by accurate information. Objectives To analyse parents knowledge of children sleep practices. Methodology A convenience sample of parents (n = 201) of children from three schools in a northern city of Portugal completed the "Sleep Ideas" Parent Survey on child sleep habits and parental basic sleep knowledge, beliefs and attitudes regarding sleep as a health behaviour. Results Of the 201 analysed surveys (response rate 67 %), 33.8 % are from parents of children aged under 3 years old, 19.4 % of children with 3 years older, 24.4 % of children with 4 years old, 16.4 % of children with 5 years old and 6.0 % of children with 6 years...

Objectives Designed in the scope of the Portuguese National School Health Program, the objectives of this project were to promote adequate sleep routines, raise awareness of children’s sleep deprivation and to the consequences of an abusive contact with technologies. At the end of this activity, children should be able to recognize the importance of these dimensions. Methodology The formative activity, performed by 2 school nurses, was applied to 104 children (from 3 different schools from a northern city of Portugal), with 4 (41.3 %), 5 (44.2 %) and 6 years old (14.4 %), and lasted 45 minutes. The project comprises 4 stages: the first one relates to nurses and project theme presentation; the second one is the implementation of a theatre where major issues of the pro...

This article presents results from the application, at the local level, of the environmental indicator Env_WeGIx that combines several variables that translate the environment conditions of Portuguese municipalities. This composite indicator was developed based on methodological procedures used for the construction of other indicators. Preliminary results show that municipalities from Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas are located at the bottom of the ranking due to waste production, pollutant emissions and fossil fuel consumption for transports. The municipalities located in the archipelagos, Alentejo, and Algarve regions are at the ranking top. This work's main conclusions highlight that environmental issues have direct consequences on populations' living conditions with more emphasis on urban territories, and that public policy design should take into account solutions for the environmental challenges of urban spaces. This study allowed for the development of an urban environmental sustainability indicator through a multi-scale analysis across the Portuguese territory. This indicator provides qualified knowledge for the choice and enhancement of public policies on environmental issues.

Hypertension is a silent disease, inductive of other noncommunicable diseases (chronic, metabolic and degenerative) with special attention to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases which, in turn, are responsible for a high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Diseases of the circulatory system are the leading cause of death in adults in Portugal, and in all European countries. Lifestyles (physical activity, dietary pattern, smoking, alcohol and caffeine habits), condition health, including the values of blood pressure. With the increase of life expectancy these phenomena become increasingly visible and therefore will reveal the need for a more urgent resolution, because the more age progresses the more significant are the comorbidities with ever earlier demonstrations. It is essential to invest in the rehabilitation of lifestyles that promote health and quality of life. The sooner the formative process is implemented, the higher will be the guarantees of its success. XXII Objectives: 1. To characterize the socio-demographic data, personal end family medical history of the disease, blood pressure, anthropometry and lifestyles (physical activity, smoking, alcohol and caffeine, and nutritional intake) in young adults (18-40 years) residents in Oporto city. 2. To evaluate the effect of socio-demographic data, personal history of disease and anthropometric measurements (weight, height, body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumference) in the variation of blood pressure levels in young adults (18-40 years) residents in Oporto city. 3. To evaluate the effect of physical activity on the variation in blood pressure levels in young adults (18-40 years) residents in Oporto city. 4. To evaluate the effect of the habits of alcohol consumption, smoking and caffeine ingestion on the variation in blood pressure levels in young adults (18-40 years) residents in Oporto city. 5. To evaluate the effect of nutritional intake on the variation of blood pressure levels in young adults (18-40 years) residents in Porto city. Study Description: An epidemiological study was conducted, cross-sectional and analytical, in order to characterize and evaluate the effect of lifestyle on the variation of blood pressure levels in the group of study participants: young adults residents in Oporto city, of both sexes, aged 18 to 40 years. This investigation will allow us to assess the magnitude of the relationship between each of these factors and the variation in blood pressure levels in this age group, and will provide the knowledge that should underpin the development of appropriate preventive strategies for this population, focusing on the rehabilitation of their lifestyles, according to the results found. XXX sodium in 2nd and 3rd quartiles. Only women with average daily calcium intake for the last quartile have a protective effect in relation to the variation of BP before and after adjustment.
