Warehouse design and operations have undergone major changes over the past decades. In particular... more Warehouse design and operations have undergone major changes over the past decades. In particular, with the onset of e-commerce, the complexity of warehouse operations has increased multi-fold with the storage of large SKU assortment in small quantities, volatile demand patterns and primarily single-line customer orders. They have grown in size due to consolidation, new and fast identification and communication technologies have found their way into the warehouse and process automation technologies have progressed improving speed and operational efficiencies. In line with these developments, this special issue pays attention to new technologies and methods and how they impact warehouse design and management.

A variety of factors can trigger changes in an organization. The initiatives of change can be political, economic, technological and social-cultural factors. Changes due to political factors could result from government legislation, international laws, and taxation and union activities. The economic dimension results from the actions of suppliers, competitors, economic policies, wage rates and global economic conditions. Social-cultural change can be initiated by demographic trends, lifestyle changes, availability of skills, business ethics and the attitudes to diversity. In learning institutions, technology is an element that ought to be implemented in classrooms settings. In Saudi Arabia, the education system is characterized by strong religious presence. Both gender learn the same curriculum and take similar annual examinations. Quality education is the foundation of the country's prosperity and development. The nation has however not incorporated technology into its cotemporary classroom activities. A shift to digitize the learning is a positive step towards student centered learning that the country hopes to achieve. The IT infrastructure will position the nation to produce learners that can fairly compete on the global platform. By incorporating technology the country stands to empower its learners to exploit the massive resources the internet offers and convenience in learning. The nation is known for its reluctance to acquire foreign concepts that may erode its culture. Technology however if used in the correct way does not pose a risk to the character of the students.
