The translator's 'competence' has been a key topic of interest and debate... more The translator's 'competence' has been a key topic of interest and debate in translator education for many years now. A number of two-dimensional translator competence models have been published and referred to in numerous other publications; and far beyond the field of translation studies, 'competency-based teaching' seems to have become the key catchword of education in the new millenium. While acknowledging the potential value of these models for contributing to the understanding of the translator's skills and capabilities as static virtual entities, this article will propose adding a third dimension: time, which will be shown to be necessary for illustrating and better understanding the dynamic nature of competence development. Curriculum development work within the context of the European Graduate Placement Scheme provided a special opportunity for developing and applying a three-dimensionalmulti-vortex model on the basis of an emergentist pedagogical epistemology.

These days, under the influence of the Bologna Process, the development of the European Master&#3... more These days, under the influence of the Bologna Process, the development of the European Master's in Translation (EMT) network and the OPTIMALE project, translator training is in the process of changing considerably from rather purely academic and theory-oriented to more practice-oriented with a strong focus on professionalisation and em-ployability. This paper will outline a curriculum whose footprint was set up almost two decades before the signing of the Sorbonne Declaration in 1998 and the Bologna Declaration in 1999, but which is still highly relevant today as an example of a practice-oriented translator training curriculum and which fits well in recent views on translator training.

This chapter first gives an overview of existing interpretations of the concept of quality in org... more This chapter first gives an overview of existing interpretations of the concept of quality in organizations in general, as well as in the translation industry and translator training. This is followed by a discussion of quality assessment and how this is generally dealt with in the translation industry and translator training. Various perspectives are possible, but the focus is on translation as service provision as outlined in the translation services standards EN 15038 and ISO 17100. It is argued that implementing quality assessment of translation as service provision in translator training requires the introduction into the curriculum of quality management and quality assurance by students; a so-called skills lab is an ideal environment for this. Various suggestions are then given for assessing quality management and quality assurance while taking into account the requirements of validity and reliability.

Collaboration is generally understood as a form of working together between people,1 specifically... more Collaboration is generally understood as a form of working together between people,1 specifically in order to produce something, the latter distinguishing it from cooperation. Collaboration may take place in many domains. In translation-related domains, it may occur as, for example, collaborative translation, collaborative learning, or collaborative evaluation. In this article, I will focus on collaborative translation. The concept of “collaboration in translation” in the form of collaborative translation is highly relevant for translator training and fits well in Kiraly’s (2000, 2004, 2016) socio-constructivist approach to translator training with its emergentist perspective on learning. The term is not clear-cut in Translation Studies and may refer to “collaboration” but also to “cooperation”. The aim of the project is to test a method for analyzing semantic developments in neologisms and to see what dictionaries do with neologisms. The project consists of an analysis of 47 words and phrases in 13 different dictionaries. The total number of items of analysis (given and/or not given in thesc dictionaries) is 631. Hans Dorrestijn en Jean Paul Van Bendegem op een onderhoudende wijze hun relatie met vaktaal toe.

Wat hebben golfers met juristen gemeen? En wetenschappers met zeilers? En waarom tref je muziekliefhebbers in de buurt van liefhebbers van paardendressuur aan? Dit boek geeft op deze en tal van andere vragen een antwoord.

Het maakt de alomtegenwoordigheid en noodzaak van terminologie, van vaktaal duidelijk. Vaak maken wij van vaktermen gebruik, zij het onbewust, omdat het nu eenmaal onbegonnen werk is over dingen te praten waarvoor je geen naam hebt. Daarom ook is het belangrijk dat wij op alle domeinen en in alle situaties de dingen een naam kunnen geven, niet alleen wiskundigen en zeilers, maar ook juristen, golfspelers, muziekliefhebbers, schakers, economen, vrouwen, mannen die van kokerellen houden, enz. enz.

Warm aanbevolen aan iedereen die vindt dat wij het Nederlands voor de toekomst behouden moet blijven als taal en als moeder voor allerlei vaktalen.

This study was carried out as a PhD dissertation for Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The Netherland... more This study was carried out as a PhD dissertation for Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The Netherlands). It zooms in on the model for lexical structuring put forward by Alinei (1980a), called TCM for "Two-Cycle Model of Grammar". The model incorporates a number of disciplines, including Structural Semantics and an early version of Generative Grammar. Although syntax-based, it also has a number of elements that point towards Cognitive Linguistics, or at least that can -with a number of adjustments to the original model -be brought in line with it. The focus of this study is on the first cycle of the model, i.e. the Lexical Cycle, its lexical structuring principles and resulting structure of the lexicon. Parts of the adjusted model emerging from this study have been applied to other disciplines such as Lexicography, Terminology and Translation.
