With these practices they could support the outreach of local communities and understand the nuances of reusing archival content to contextualize their records. In order to sustain this claim, I present one case study in which a group of international writers and video makers join forces to re-use audiovisual archive material in Helsinki, Finland. I unfold the limitations and opportunities that a one-day event presented to artists, archivists and media scholars, while collaborating and creatively re-using audiovisual archival material. The discussion uncovers issues pertaining to the facilitation of creative re-use as means for integration, the multicultural representation of the archives, the development of media literacy in collaborative processes and the challenges in the practice of legally reusing archival material.

The aim of OurCity was to democratize design processes and to empower local residents to influence the redevelopment of their area. PD processes were a key component to the OurCity project and its activities, particularly in relation to the process of drafting an Alternative Master Plan (AMP) for the area. The plan competed with, and lost by a narrow margin to, the plan drafted by the Helsinki City Planning Department. The scope of PD was underestimated because AMP, the design object, was envisioned in isolation from the participatory process it entailed. Had PD been presented as crucial to the process, AMP would have greater impact. In this article, we argue that it is necessary to make PD processes more visible in the end products of participatory planning. We base this argument on firsthand experience as members of the OurCity team and on an analysis of printed media and digital texts.

Through the discussion of a case study of a government design lab, formerly inside the Finnish Immigration Service, the question of how design can help public sector organizations better respond to their pressing needs is addressed, in an attempt to explore the value of design as it is being used by the increasing population of policy labs in governments across Europe. While these labs have been charged to bring innovation to government, there are several factors that hinder their roles as "challengers" of the system. Given the temporal constraints and limited decisionmaking power of policy labs, cultivating a culture of design has been identified by the authors as a promising outcome, acting as a generative tool for organizational change through its capacity to mediate between the production and consumption of products/services.

Together with the elderly users of the home care service and the personnel of the home care crew we designed and implemented Palvelutupa (Service Cottage). Elders took part in communal actions once a week. These actions varied from recreational activities to lectures on daily issues such as nutrition or footwear advices. In addition to the social activities, a health check took place there. Participants took part in the development of the concept for this service and also in the participatory prototyping that was run in the city premises during 8 days along 2 months. The main elements of this service are transportation to the meeting place, taking part in structured activities, getting health care information and check, eating and spending free-time in a small group. Furthermore, participants had the change to influence in the fut...

These two workshops were organized as part of the research activities of the project Aanijalki. Clay pieces and models were used in the workshops to build a map of ideas and to describe future museum exhibitions accessible to visually impaired people. The analysis of the materials together with the participant's interpretations is an exploration into visually impaired people's perceptions. This analysis provides preliminary suggestions for planning future collaboration in the design of future museums with visually impaired people.

By attempting to understand what others do, we hope to better understand and articulate our own participatory practice and our role in the future. Our findings show that participatory designers are, in fact, still needed, even in contexts where other participatory practitioners play a more central role; it is important that we learn from and collaborate with those other practitioners.
