Despite various policies introduced, the RE deployment in Malaysia has been weak, especially individual RE uptake. Lack of policy support has been linked with inadequate policy awareness and information based on the knowledge deficit theory. This study investigates the support for the Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) and Net Energy Metering (NEM) policy of individual solar photovoltaic (PV) technology among landed residents in Malaysia and the effect of information provision on policy support. A Solomon-four-group design was employed to measure policy support and test the relationship between information provision and policy support using a set of Likert scale questionnaires and a poster of FiT and NEM policy prepared in layman's terms as an intervention. Results show that majority of the residents agree with the environmental mission of the policy, except for the reduction of fossil fuel usage. For the ...

In order to promote production of renewable energy in Malaysia, the government has introduced a Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme under the Renewable Energy Act 2011. This paper examines community readiness towards adopting Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) in Raub, Pahang, Malaysia through the FiT scheme. By using the Community Readiness Model proposed by the Tri-Ethnic Center, the analysis shows that the people in Raub are not ready to accept the FiT scheme and to adopt the BIPV system. The main reasons for this are the lack of information about the FiT scheme and high initial installation cost for the BIPV. The study concludes that more measures need to be done to increase community readiness to implement BIPV.

Primary data from interviews and secondary data from published articles were gathered and analysed using inductive and deductive thematic content analysis assisted by NVivo 10. Our results indicate that the three main threats for the species are human-elephant conflict, habitat loss, and poaching. The conversion of forests into plantations and human-dominated areas, including infrastructure developments, are the primary causes for human-elephant conflict and habitat loss. Meanwhile, the high demand and monetary return from ivory trade are the primary causes to illegal poaching

Malaysia has taken initiative in enforcing the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 20... more Malaysia has taken initiative in enforcing the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672) since 2011 to ensure the uniformity of law relating to the solid waste management and public cleansing. Despite the alarming issues on the increasing of solid waste generation, Malaysian government has made solid waste separation at source as mandatory starting 1 st September 2015 at eight states. Solid waste separation at source has been seen as the best practice of solid waste minimization where it eliminates and reduces the amount of solid waste produced by the society. The government has taken seriously in solid waste separation at source as the lifespan of disposal site has been decreased and limited space for the new disposal site due to the increasing cost of solid waste management. Hence, to overcome the increasing of solid waste generation, an integrated solid waste minimization through recycling should be implemented as it is involved in minimizing resource and off...

However, the expansion of economic sector and industrial process have inevitably jeopardised environmental quality and contributed towards degrading air quality and occurrance of haze. Consequences of economic activities on the environment have already been acknowledged and various measures have been introduced to regulate such activities. However, while the main focus of controlling air pollution has always been on regulating emission discharge, one important but less developed aspects of such control is pertaining to corporate environmental duties as well as liabilities. The notion of corporate’s legal duty to meet general environmental protection obligations is something relatively new to Malaysia but progressing. This can be seen from the introduction of strategies within environmental law that invoke either self-regulation or shared responsibility between gover...

In the case of Malaysia, activities relating to open burning have been identified to be among the contributors of air pollution and haze phenomenon that are causing a deteriorating quality of the atmosphere. However, a total prohibition on open burning may not be practicable in the context of Malaysia due to various factors including that concerning land-use practices. In this region, the land-use systems are relying on open burning as one of the methods of land clearing. Some agricultural and farming processes especially among the smallholders and subsistence farmers are still based on the traditional method of using fire. For the policy makers, these are factors that need to be taken into consideration when formulating a law on open burning in order to strike a balance between land-use management and environmental protection. For this reason, this paper seeks to h...
