However, there is still a scarce amount of empirical research addressing issues such as defining localization in relation to translation, what localization competence entails or how to best incorporate intercultural differences between digital genres, text types and conventions, among other aspects. In this paper, we propose a foundation for the study of localization competence based upon previous research on translation competence. This project was developed following an empirical corpus-based contrastive study of student translations (learner corpus), combined with data from a comparable corpus made up of an original Spanish corpus and a Spanish localized corpus. The objective of the study is to identify differences in production between digital texts localized by students and professionals on the one hand, and original texts on the other. This contrastive study allows us to gain in...

In scientific communication, selecting a term often means highlighting a more or less prototypical feature of a concept, revealing an intention from the issuer or even a certa...

En este trabajo se describe un proyecto de cooperación en el que se elaboraron materiales didácticos bilingües con el objetivo de fomentar el desarrollo de la población indígena mayahablante desde el reconocimiento de su idiosincrasia lingüística y cultural. Palabras clave: interculturalidad, lengua maya, acceso a la salud, materiales multimedia, mediación lingüística y cultural. Access to healthcare for the Mayan-speaking indigenous population of Mexico: creation of educational materials from an intercultural perspective Abstract: Several international laws establish the individual's right to access healthcare services and to speak their native language; indigenous peoples, however, are vulnerable populations that do not always enjoy thes...

Their micro and macrostructural design should be oriented towards what user groups need to know about words and the uses that will be made of such knowledge. One specific use for dictionaries is the activity of translation. From the perspective of professional translators, dictionaries should allow for creativity and dynamicity in text production, providing solutions for changing communication needs. Dictionary-making for such a purpose can and should benefit from insights into words and meanings from other fields. Interdisciplinarity in Lexicography is just one example of how other fields interact in Translation Studies. In this paper we analyse how working in an interdisciplinary way is crucial to developing useful lexicographic and terminographic tools for translators and how methodologies, such as corpus-based work and experimental methods should be combined to offer converging evidence of different aspe...

Within the context of the design of a translation course in an e-learning context, the teacher must bear in mind that the student is faced with tasks that require the previous design of aids that help both in the translation process and in the acquisition of field knowledge to carry them out. Furthermore, the design should reflect the new multimedia structures that the information society has brought about. We present a series of activities generated with both visual and textual material implemented in the design of e-learning courses in audiovisual translation (subtitling and multimedia), technical and scientific translation. One of the courses is accessible through the WebCT e-learning platform, another uses the BSCWTM collaborative learning platform and the...

By acknowledging the fundamental role of Vygotsky in determining his approach, Kiraly brought translator training in line with the established, broad-based humanistic approach to Foreign Language Learning; by drawing on Stevick and Schön, among others, he made this debt explicit. In this article, we apply the social constructivist approach through blended e-learning environments in courses offered to final year undergraduate students of translation. Our objective is to determine the success of combining technology and social constructivist pedagogy in promoting effective learner-centered learning. In Kiraly’s terms, we have “scaffolded” our instruction by applying instruments such as rating scales of criterion-referenced descriptors; textual and visual aids; and learner generated corpora. Our qua...

A three-step analysis was carried out on a 60-million-word corpus to detect and characterize the most typical medical terms used in a cancer forum by means of (1) keywords contrastive, (2) co-text-guided, and (3) semantic analyses. More than half of the 1000 words analysed were medical terms according to the co-text-guided analysis carried out. Most of them (73%) were dictionary-defined medical terms, followed by co-text-defined terms (9%) and medical initialisms (8.5%). The semantic analysis showed a higher number of terms within the fields of Anatomy, Treatment, Hospital and Symptoms. Our findings suggest that medical terms are commonly used in cancer forums, especially to share e-patients' concerns about treatment, symptoms and hospital environment. The method followed is efficient and could be applied in future studies. Altogether, this art...

To meet these new challenges, translation teachers must place special emphasis on the importance of the non-textual informa-tion evolving around multimedia texts and adopt a more dynamic approach towards audiovisual translation (AVT). In this paper, we argue for the in-clusion of graphic information as a new focus for AVT, and present the results of a research project aimed at designing teaching materials for audiovisual, scientific and technical translation. These materials highlight the potential benefits of audiovisual resources for all users in the acquisi-tion of subject field knowledge and terminology and the constraints im-posed on translation by visual and acoustic material.
