The weight and volume of electric drive systems are of primary concern in aerospace applications.... more The weight and volume of electric drive systems are of primary concern in aerospace applications. Here, a high power density axial-flux permanent magnet machine is developed. A compact stator winding with rectangular wire is proposed. The stator coils are connected along the machine inner diameter (ID). The ID connections help to reduce the machine weight and volume and meet the application targets. A detailed winding design procedure is presented considering manufacturing constraints. An electrostatic analysis is also performed to define the wire insulation thickness and the minimum spacing between conductors to assure the insulation system is free of partial discharges. Additional half turns are added to three coils of the winding to place the three-phase terminals at the machine outer diameter (OD). The resultant electromagnetic impact of these three coils is assessed.

Apresenta conceitos fundamentais acerca do planejamento dos servicos em unidades de informacao e reflete sobre a importância de se considerar os estudos de usuarios nesse planejamento. O artigo apresenta pesquisa exploratoria qualitativa sobre o tema e avaliacao das propostas de planejamento dos servicos de informacao. A analise das metodologias de planejamento permitiu constatar a relevância dos estudos de usuarios no planejamento dos servicos de informacao em Bibliotecas.

Historical records document medieval immigration from North Africa to Iberia to create Islamic al... more Historical records document medieval immigration from North Africa to Iberia to create Islamic al-Andalus. Here, we present a low-coverage genome of an eleventh century CE man buried in an Islamic necropolis in Segorbe, near Valencia, Spain. Uniparental lineages indicate North African ancestry, but at the autosomal level he displays a mosaic of North African and European-like ancestries, distinct from any present-day population. Altogether, the genome-wide evidence, stable isotope results and the age of the burial indicate that his ancestry was ultimately a result of admixture between recently arrived Amazigh people (Berbers) and the population inhabiting the Peninsula prior to the Islamic conquest. Objetivo: Analisar a influência da cinta abdominal elástica na mecânica respiratória em pacientes... more Objetivo: Analisar a influência da cinta abdominal elástica na mecânica respiratória em pacientes cirróticos após paracentese. Material e métodos: Foram realizadas medidas espirométricas de Capacidade Vital Forçada (CVF), Volume Corrente (VC), Freqüência Respiratória (f) e Volume Minuto (VMin); e pressóricas da Pressão Inspiratória Máxima (PImax) e Pressão Expiratória Máxima (PEmax), antes e após paracentese e utilização de cinta elástica em 5 pacientes. Resultados: A análise dos resultados demonstrou uma tendência de melhora na CVF após a retirada de líquido ascítico, e também quando associada à cinta abdominal elástica. Evidenciou diminuição da f, manutenção do VC e conseqüentemente redução do VMin. A PImax apresentou tendência à elevação após a paracentese e principalmente com a cinta abdominal. A PEmax não apresentou alterações. Conclusão: A paracentese e a contenção abdominal podem influenciar a mecânica respiratória de pacientes com ascite.Palavras-chave: paracentese, músculos...

We have previously shown that low birth weight (LBW) rats exposed to intrauterine malnutrition ha... more We have previously shown that low birth weight (LBW) rats exposed to intrauterine malnutrition have an impaired lung inflammatory response and reduced levels of inflammatory mediators; however, circulating leptin levels were not increased. We evaluated long leptin receptor isoform (ObRb) expression in lung endothelial cells from low birth weight rats and examined its role in the production of lipid mediators and cytokines. Lung endothelial cells were obtained from normal birth weight (NBW) rats or LBW rats subjected to intrauterine malnutrition. These cells were stimulated with leptin (10 ng/mL), LPS (lipopolysaccharide, 1 g/mL), or leptin plus LPS. Six hours after stimulation, the production of inflammatory mediators (PGE, LTB, IL-1, and IL-6) was evaluated using commercial ELISA kits, and Western blotting was performed to investigate p38MAPK, NF-B, and ObRb expression. In the treatment study, good BP control was achieved compared with baseline (143/86 Ϯ 2.8/1.4 versus 174/103 Ϯ 4.1/1.9 mm Hg; p Ͻ 0.01) with significant regression of LV mass index (124 Ϯ 3.4 versus 145 Ϯ 3.8 g/m 2 ; p Ͻ 0.01). Endocardially assessed indices of LV systolic function were not significantly different. Cardiac output was 4.34 Ϯ 0.19 l/min after 6 months compared with 4.48 Ϯ 0.26 at baseline. MWS improved with regression of LVH (21.9 Ϯ 0.84, 18.7 Ϯ 1.19%; p Ͻ 0.05), post treatment MWS being similar to that of normal subjects. These results show that MWS is depressed in LVH compared with normal subjects. Depressed MWS has been shown to be an independent predictor of an adverse outcome in hypertensive subjects, particularly in those subjects with LVH so the improvement with therapy is an important observation.

Thirty-nine Schiff bases were synthesized by performing microwave-assisted condensation of the co... more Thirty-nine Schiff bases were synthesized by performing microwave-assisted condensation of the corresponding aldehydes and aromatic amines. Their reactive nitrogen species (RNS) scavenging activity and inhibitory effects against cancer cell growth were then subsequently investigated. Additionally, the interaction between the calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) and selected Schiff bases was evaluated using fluorescence spectroscopy, and their binding parameters were determined. The yields of the various compounds ranged from moderate to excellent (43-99%) after only a 2-min reaction. The hydroxylated Schiff bases 2, 8, 15, 16, 18, 20, 29, 32, 34, and 37 were found to be potent scavengers of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals with half-maximal scavenging concentration (SC50) values lower than that of the positive control, resveratrol. Indo-European, spoken across northern and central India, and also in Pakistan and Bangladesh, has been frequently connected to the so-called "Indo-Aryan invasions" from Central Asia ~3.5 ka and the establishment of the caste system, but the extent of immigration at this time remains extremely controversial. South India, on the other hand, is dominated by Dravidian languages. India displays a high level of endogamy due to its strict social boundaries, and high genetic drift as a result of long-term isolation which, together with a very complex history, makes the genetic study of Indian populations challenging. Thus, the present work aimed to assess the interaction process between the bioactive compound 11a-N-tosyl-5-carba-pterocarpan, (LQB-223), that presents antitumor activity, with DNA, employing spectroscopic techniques, electrophoresis, viscosity and theoretical studies. Through UV-vis and molecular fluorescence spectroscopy, it was possible to infer that the preferential quenching mechanism was static, characterized by non-fluorescent supramolecular complex formation between the LQB-223 and DNA. The binding constant was 1.94∙10(3)Lmol(-1) (30°C) and, according to the thermodynamic parameters, the main forces involved in the interaction process are hydrophobic. O câncer leva à óbito milhões de pessoas, sendo que a estimativa mundial para o ano de 2020 indic... more O câncer leva à óbito milhões de pessoas, sendo que a estimativa mundial para o ano de 2020 indica que poderá levar cerca de 10,3 milhões de indivíduos a morte. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a avaliação da atividade antineoplásica dos compostos de coordenação de platina frente às células neoplásicas. O desenvolvimento do projeto consiste na avaliação da citotoxicidade e da indução de apoptose mediada por 8 compostos de coordenação de platina em células neoplásicas. As células de origem leucêmicas humanas (JURKAT e MOLT-4), de melanoma humano (SKMEL-5) e melanoma murino (B16-F10) serão tratadas com diferentes concentrações dos composto de coordenação de platina (25µM, 50µM, 100µM, 200µM, 400µM e 800µM). Será realizado microensaio colorimétrico de MTT para avaliar a citotoxicidade dos compostos em células neoplásicas e em células normais humanas (PBMC). A análise da indução de apoptose será avaliada através de microscopia de fluorescência após coloração por laranja de acridina e brometo de etídio. A linhagem mais sensível aos compostos será analisada também por ensaios de Sub-G1, JC-1 e anexina V-FITC por citometria de fluxo. A toxicidade dos compostos será avaliada, in vivo, pela determinação da DL50 em camundongos C57BL/6 e BALB/c NUDE. Os resultados demonstram que os compostos PtHBPA e PtβHBPA foram capazes de reduzir a viabilidade da célula leucêmica MOLT-4. O composto PtHBPA apresentou-se citotóxico, reduzindo a viabilidade celular em 85% após 36 horas de tratamento na concentração de 25µM. O composto PtβHBPA apresentou 85% de eficiência em 400µM nas mesmas condições de tratamento. Os resultados preliminares desse estudo indicam que a linhagem celular MOLT-4, mostrou-se sensível aos complexos de coordenação de platina estudados. Além disso, podemos concluir que as estruturas dos complexos têm grande influência sobre sua atividade biológica.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup L2 originated in Western Africa but is nowadays spread acros... more Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup L2 originated in Western Africa but is nowadays spread across the entire continent. L2 movements were previously postulated to be related to the Bantu expansion, but L2 expansions eastwards probably occurred much earlier. By reconstructing the phylogeny of L2 (44 new complete sequences) we provide insights on the complex net of within-African migrations in the last 60 thousand years (ka). Results show that lineages in Southern Africa cluster with Western/Central African lineages at a recent time scale, whereas, eastern lineages seem to be substantially more ancient. Three moments of expansion from a Central African source are associated to L2: (1) one migration at 70-50 ka into Eastern or Southern Africa, (2) postglacial movements (15-10 ka) into Eastern Africa; and (3) the southward Bantu Expansion in the last 5 ka. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o conhecimento dos conceitos de gene e DNA por alunos ingressantes da Universidade Federal de Alfenas-MG (UNIFAL-MG), bem como avaliar a efetividade da dramatização como estratégia inovadora de ensino. A proposta foi avaliada pela determinação do ganho de conhecimento e do desempenho escolar. Os resultados demonstraram que os alunos ingressantes na UNIFAL-MG apresentam deficiência nos conceitos de gene e composição e estrutura do DNA, provavelmente, decorrentes de falhas no processo de ensino-aprendizagem prévios ao ingresso na universidade. A dramatização apresentou-se como estratégia eficiente para induzir ganho de conhecimento e melhora do desempenho escolar de turmas com bom nível de conhecimento inicial....

To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Brazilian version of the Pediatric Quality of Lif... more To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Brazilian version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL 4.0) Generic Core Scales and measure the quality of life of healthy children and adolescents and patients with rheumatic diseases. We followed the translation methodology proposed by the developer of the original English version of the PedsQL 4.0. The instrument was administered by interviews in two groups: 240 apparently healthy children and adolescents from São Paulo (SP, Brazil) and 105 patients with chronic rheumatic diseases matched by age, as well as their respective parents or caregivers. The parent proxy-report was administered to the children's parents or caregivers separately on the same day. Cronbach's alpha values were between 0.6 and 0.9 for all dimensions, demonstrating adequate internal consistency. Patients with rheumatic diseases reported significantly lower PedsQL scores on all dimensions when compared to the healthy control group (p < 0.0...
