In this paper we examine whether simulated state-level impacts of trade policy changes obtained from an applied general equilibrium model explain recent US Senate votes on trade bills. We find that simulated gross state product effects are good predictors

Because of the ability of farmers to adapt , however, these changes are not likely to imperil world food production. Nevertheless, world production of all goods and services may decline, if climate change is severe enough or if

We use the USAGE-ITC model, an applied general equilibrium model of the United States. Our simulation suggests that the immigration surplus due to undocumented workers is about $20 billion, which is about 0.19 percent of GDP. Additional calculations with the GTAP model of global trade suggest that ignoring the international implications of immigration and remittances might underestimate the immigration surplus due to undocumented workers.

Further work may supplement this quantitative analysis with country-specific disaggregated analysis to assess the environmental impacts of trade liberalization at the sub-national level. The approach applied by is promising.

The parametric, restrictions implied by a cost-of-adjustment model are rejected. A less restrictive, disequilibrium model is accepted; this is a model of partial and interrelated adjustment among inputs and outputs. The results suggest that adjustment in quasi-fixed inputs is slow affecting the adjustment in variable inputs and outputs.

Simulated impacts suggest that a 30 percent reduction in farm and food tariffs would benefit U.S. farming in terms of output, net exports and income. The U.S. processed food sector would decline, but net exports of processed foods would increase. A 30 percent reduction in farm tariffs coupled with tariff de-escalation in farm-processed foods trade would strengthen further the U.S. farm economy as well as net exports of processed foods. The U.S. processed foods sector would gain the most when a 30 percent reduction in farm tariffs is coupled with elimination of tariff escalation in farm-processed foods trade.

Special features include recent estimates of applied tariffs and TRQs and explicit treatment of those policies in the model. Estimates of welfare impacts suggest that policy reform agreed in the URAA and continuation of such reform would lead to significant welfare gains for the world as a whole and for most regions. Further work may include alternative liberalization scenarios to identify and prioritize policy options regarding market access.

A number of studies have evaluated effects of climate change on world agricultural systems. Most however used methods that did not permit explicit incorporation of land resources into the analysis. We integrate the GTAP database and the additional information with a quadratic mathematical programming model that (a) minimizes the deviation of the resulting new data set from the original GTAP data, (b) ensures that supply and use balance for each sector and every country, and (c) keeps all sectoral bilateral trade flows in the GTAP database constant. Bilateral and aggregate reliability indexes are computed for each GTAP sectors and end use categories which are used to control the relative amount of adjustment for each end-use categories within each original bilateral trade flows from the GTAP database. The new database covers 63 countries/regions and 41 sectors for 2004 and 2007 two years.
