Their cultural characteristics comprised common choices and styles of execution, with a central meaning and functionality attached to ‘doing things a certain way’, over an enormous geographical area. However, recent evidence suggests that the reality was much more varied and diverse. The central question of this book is the extent to which notions of ‘uniformity’ and ‘diversity’ have caused a wider shift in archaeological perspective.

Using the LBK case study as a starting point, the volume brings together contributions by international specialists tackling the notion of cultural diversity and its explanatory power in archaeological analysis more generally. Through discussions of the domestic architecture, stone tool inventory, pottery traditions, landscape use and burial traditions of the LBK, this book provides a crucial reappraisal of the culture’s potential for adaptability and change.

Papers in the second part of the volume are devoted to archaeological case studies from around the globe in which the tension between diversity and uniformity has also proved controversial, including the Near Eastern Halaf culture, the North American Mississippian, the Pacific expansion of the Lapita culture, and the European Bell Beaker phenomenon. All provide exciting theoretical and methodological contributions on how the appreciation of cultural diversity as a whole can be moved forward. These papers expose diversity and uniformity as cultural strategies, and as such provide essential reading for scholars in archaeology and anthropology, and for anyone interested in the interplay between material culture and human social change.

It unites a group of archaeologists from France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, who belong to different research traditions. Our first meetings stressed the need for a cross-border dialogue and a common language for lithic analysis, including raw material analysis, blank production and tool production. We began by highlighting the differences and proximities between the different approaches, the potentialities to bridge these differences, the archaeological goals and the training needed. Our project, therefore, aims to harmonise our study practices in order to promote international communication and collaboration.

Partly as a result of poor-quality data, previous studies on Upper Palaeolithic (UP) societies of North-Western Europe prior to the LGM have focused on socio-cultural traditions and diversification to outline the diachronic processes through which technological behaviour changed. This study addresses the adaptive trade-offs brought about by the general climatic downturn towards the LGM in North-Western Europe, by investigating the impact of local climate and habitat characteristics on the behavioural variability that characterises Gravettian technological organisation compared to the previous Aurignacian, based on two assemblages from Walou Cave, Belgium. This site is one of the rare well-stratified sites in North-Western Europe with evidence for multiple occupation events accompanied by a fine-grained palaeoenvironmental record. We us...

We...

The settlement is located at a distance of at least seventeen kilometres from the nearest outcrops of chert hearing rocks. lts inhahitants practised a procurement strategy different from that known at Bandkeramik sites in flint-bearing regions, such as Hienheim. This strategy involved a more careful selection of raw material at extraction sites. However, there was no evidente for a dearth of raw material, nor for parsimonious behaviour once the chert had arrived at the settlement.

These plans were developed by the Municipality of Maastricht and the Province of Limburg after a change of course, announced in 1998 by the museum, which would henceforth focus exclusively on visual arts. The need for a bridging exhibition for the archaeological collection soon arose, so that at least part of the collection could remain accessible to a wide public. The choice for a subject was quickly made: the Roman bridges of Maastricht. The exhibition could thus become a pilot project for the Archaeological Center de Wiebengahal, which would, after all, exhibit archaeological finds in the context of archaeological monument preservation and current archaeological research. In 1999, research by diving archaeologists from the Netherlands Institute for Ship and Underwater Archeology (Lelystad), supported by Rijkswaterstaat, had provided fascinating data about the location, conservation status and dating of the bridge remains. This allowed the previously discovered finds to be placed in a new light. These so-called 'Meuse stones' have been the center of gravity of Maastricht's archaeological collection since 1963, both literally and figuratively. The exhibition 'Over.Bruggen' in the Archaeological Center de Wiebengahal from May 3, 2000 until well into 2001 was the only time that the Roman Meuse Stones of Maastricht were exhibited together and in their historical context. After that, everything was – for good (?) – placed in storage, because that Archaeological Center the Wiebengahal never came to be.

a new name for an old phenomenon (concept and meaning):

The fertile strip of land stretching between the French Channel
coast at Boulogne s.M. (Dép. Nord / Pas-de-Calais), to Bavay,
Henegouwen, the Haspengouw, Tongeren (Belgian Limburg),
Maastricht, Heerlen, (Dutch Limburg) and the Rhineland at
Cologne (Germany), have within living memory, been the selfevident geographical surroundings where people settled and
achieved an intensive exchange of persons, goods and ideas.
That was already the case in the far prehistory when groups of
hunters and gatherers coming from the east stayed here and in
the younger Stone-age when the first farmers settled down. The
Romans formalised this natural connecting area by building the
first great infra-structural backbone, the Roman paved military
road from Northern Gaul and the Channel coast to the Rhine,
which subsequently acquired great military and economical
importance.
