This is distinguished by its high performance, its bright red and very spicy fruit. 'Mayan Kisin' originated from four selection cycles carried out on landraces collected in the region of Valladolid, in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. Although the center of origin of Capsicum chinense is located in South America, in the area located between southern Brazil and eastern Bolivia, western Paraguay and northern Argentina (Aguilar-Rinc on et al., 2010), the Yucatan Peninsula is recognized as a center of genetic diversity of the species C. chinense Jacq. (Latournerie et al., 2001). In this region there are orange, red, yellow, and purple fruits of this species. It is said that the habanero pepper grown in the Yucatan Peninsula can be distinguished from habanero peppers grown in the region of the world, by its peculiar aroma, taste, and more particularly, its high level of pungency. Probably, the combination of soil and climate in the Yucatan Peninsula, located in the Mexican southeast, confers the habanero pepper cultivated in Yucat an Peninsula with characteristics that set it apart from habanero peppers cultivated in any other region of the world. These attributes allowed it to qualify for the Denomination of Origin Habanero Pepper of the Yucatan Peninsula, published by the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF: 4 June 2010). Paradoxically, the cultivars of habanero, cultivated in the region, are characterized by their low yields, small and orange fruits, as well as the high variability

El 75 % de la población mundial lo incluye en su dieta alimenticia diaria y puede superar, en algunos casos, el consumo de otros cereales como el maíz y el trigo (1, 2).

The experiment was performed in asbestos cement gutters with a microjet irrigation system under organoponic conditions. The percentage of heterosis and narrow-sense heritability was estimated. The study of heterosis enabled to identify those hybrids showing a better behavior than their cultivars of origin, regarding many important characters for the producer, reaching the highest yield values at the Top cross, and yield as well as fruit number at the Biparental one. Every character showed high values of heritability, except yield per plant with mean values.

The experiment was performed in asbestos cement gutters with a microjet irrigation system under organoponic conditions. Results from the Main Components analyses showed those quantitative characters contributing the most to the total variation, standing out fruit number per plant, average fruit weight and polar as well as equatorial diameters in component 1, whereas in component 2 stood out yield per plant and days to flowering and maturity of studied cultivars; meanwhile Biplot and Cluster Analysis Dendrogram representation allowed to identify cultivars LMN-64, Vyta, Amalia, Floradel AN-104-1 and A4 with the highest differences among themselves in the evaluated ...

It is oftentime consuming as breeding a new cultivar takes between eightand ten years and even then, the release of improved cultivaris not guaranteed. Hence, breeders are extremely interested innew technologies that could make this procedure moreefficient. Marker-assisted selection, often simply referred toas Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) offers such a possibilityby adopting a wide range of novel approaches to improvingthe selection strategies in crop breeding. Molecular markersare powerful research tools that make it possible to determinethe genetic makeup of plants; for that it is possible the selectionby plants genotype. In this paper, we refer the significantadvancements towards application of molecular markertechnology for crop improvement in the last decade, in tomato. Finally, we discuss reasons why the greater adoption of MA...

A scaleand an index that permits described the intensity and severityof sunspot damage. Additionally, we realized a histological, quality and nutritional study. The 80 percent of evaluated fruitwas affected by sunspot, with law intensity but a maximseverity in the scale. The histological in healthy and damagedfruits show different between pericarp cell sizes and morphologic. The quality values not show affectations, butthe lycopene concentration decreased in fruits with sunspot(92 to 74 ¿g/g). Results allow confirm the present of sunspot disorder, characterized by aberrant ripening and low lycopeneconcentration in the tomato shoulder fruits. Theseobservations provide a basis for comparing sunspot inuniformly ripening tomatoes with other blotchy ripeningdisorders.

At present, plant breeding for disease resistance or tolerance constitutes one of the most promising ways to reduce damages caused by this virus, since most existing tomato seedlings are susceptible to it. This study evaluated the agromorphological characteristics and resistance to TYLCV of eight tomato genotypes introduced in our country. From the agromorphologic viewpoint, a phenotypical variability was detected in all materials evaluated. Except the susceptible control, every accession was asymptomatic to the virus; however, viral concentrations were recorded just in some sampled plants of these accessions.

At present, several genes related to resistance have been described. Ty-1, Ty-2 and Ty-3 are the most widely used genes in plant breeding programs. In Cuba, there is only one Ty-1 gene-carrier called Vyta. This work identified the presence of the band related to Ty-2 gene resistant pattern in two characterized materials. For Ty-3 gene, all genotypes showed the susceptible pattern.

Together with other families of viruses, the begomoviruses cause great damage for producers of fresh and processed tomatoes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of 11 resistant genotypes to Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) when infected by the begomoviruses Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV) and Tomato yellow spot virus (ToYSV) under greenhouse conditions. Tomato plants were inoculated by biobalistic method when displaying two true leaves. Viral infection was confirmed by visual observation of symptoms and by dot blot hybridization. Genotypes STY2, STY5, STY6 and L7 were selected as promising due to the absence of symptoms and very low viral concentration for both viruses. The resistance genes Ty-1 and Ty-2 were not effective against the viral species used in the study. The lines TY52, H24 and CLN2116B, carrying these genes, exhibited a s...
