In this context, there is not only a lack of collection, evaluation and presentation of relevant data, but also a lack of a general, recognised concept of which aspects sustainability in tourism should encompass and how these can be methodically linked to form an overall system. The creation of a concept for the empirical evaluation of sustainability in tourism, including the identification of relevant data sources, is the task of the project. The aim is to develop a measurement system that provides a meaningful and comprehensive overview of the sustainable development of tourism over time and in relation to the economy as a whole.

There is concern that the existing volume and variety of labels has become a barrier to consumer choice, which in consequence may lead to lost opportunities to increase the competitiveness of the European tourism industry. The study analyses the possibility of the introduction of an EU standard(s) for tourism services through the initiation of a harmonised EU certification system and the potential for the establishment of a single European tourism label.
