The PJBL STEM approach is a learning approach that combines several scientific disciplines and co... more The PJBL STEM approach is a learning approach that combines several scientific disciplines and combines the learning process using a project model. Through this approach, it is hoped that it can improve thinking skills, therefore this research was conducted to determine the effect of the steam approach in improving critical thinking skills. The method used in this research is quantitative with a pre-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest with a population of fifth grade elementary school students. Research data was taken using critical thinking and observation questionnaire instruments. From the research results, it is known that the STEAM approach has a significant influence in improving the critical thinking abilities of fifth grade elementary school children. This increase is reflected in critical thinking indicators which show improvement compared to learning that does not use the STEAM approach. From the research results, it was obtained that the average percentage of each indicator during the pre-test was 43.56% and after treatment, the post-test results for each indicator were obtained with a percentage of 65.98, so that if you look at the average percentage for each indicator, there was an increase in ability. critical thinking of 22.42%.

The t-test shows that t obs = 7, 51 66 and t (0,05;40) = 1,74 8 7 , so t obs > t (0,05’40) that t hit DK , therefore H o is rejected. Eventually, it can be concluded that the developed textbooks is eligible for teaching learning.

This type of research is a quasi-experimental research. This research was conducted through categorizing an experimental group by textbook thematic based character education and a control group by using the conventional learning textbook. The population in this research was 61 fourth-grade students in total. Sample determination was conducted by using simple random sampling. In this research, data collection techniques were test and observation. Data analysis techniques were descriptive statistics and t-test with SPSS 21.0. The result of calculation shows that the t-result is 9.162 with which the significance level is less than 0.05 that is 0.000. The results can be concluded that: 1) students responses toward the textbooks development on preliminary field testing are 80.24%, and include in a good and feasibility category; 2) the students learning achievements on main field testing before and after the thematic textbooks utilization are increased. Also based on t-test show the result of 105,222. Eventually, it can be concluded that the developed textbooks is eligible for teaching learning.

Through this approach, it is hoped that it can improve thinking skills, therefore this research was conducted to determine the effect of the steam approach in improving critical thinking skills.
