Clinically and radiologically we suspected a pulmonary excavated right lower lobe neoplasia, but unsustained by fiber-bronchoscopy and thoracic computer tomography. By this reason the patient underwent exploratory thoracotomy and the diagnosis was confirmed by the biopsy of the resected specimen: pulmonary epidermoid carcinoma. The short term outcome was favourable.

One of the patients was diagnosed with pulmonary carcinoma, and directed to the oncology department. The other one was diagnosed with pulmonary abscess, treated with antibiotics and improved.

The aim of the study was to assess the risk of TB disease among HIV infected persons, based on different clues for tuberculosis9 positive diagnosis, in a TB burden area, Constanta County. Design: Prospective study started in 01 February 2009, ended in 31 January 2011. Material and methods: Evaluation for TB disease diagnosis was done in 51 HIV patients with initiated active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) after 1996 and included medical history, physical examination, Mantoux Tuberculin skin test, chest X-ray, Bactec 9050 blood culture results, bacteriological exam (Acid Fast Stains smear and Lowenstein Jensen cultures). All 51 HIV infected patients were monitored 2 years in order to diagnose the active TB diseases. Results: The stu...

Both of them have important effects on vascular system and their major complications are caused by alterations of vasculature. Arterial hypertension and type 2 diabetes are frequently associated. Beyond classical risk factors implicated in both diseases, in recent years some novel markers of vascular involvement have been studied, such as intima – media thickness (IMT) and parameters of arterial stiffness. Women seem to have an increased vascular risk associated with diabetes than do men but this is not clean from the current literature. The aim of our study was to determine the consequences of hypertension and of hypertension associated with diabetes on intima media thickness and arterial stiffness in women. Patients and methods. We studied 30 women with hypertension (group 1), 33 with diabetes mellitus and hypertension (group 2) and 21 healthy controls (HC), matched for age. We evaluated some c...

The authors tried and also succeded to achive the goal of the study: to create a malignancy probability calculation model using a batch of 87 patients admitted to Thoracic Surgery Ward, Marius Nasta Pneumology National Institute between January 2001 and September 2006 with utmost smaller or equal to 3 cm solitary pulmonary nodules at plain chest radiograph. Using t test method, χ2 Pearson test and logistic regression were selected a few parameters to obtain a model that describes a very good relation between independent variable and the dependent variable, malignancy feature by obtaining a malignancy probability resulting a model, SPN Bucharest statistical model which was validated by appling to the SPN Bucharest batch the Swensen mo...

The outcome of this study served its purpouse successfully showing the betterness of PET-CTi investigational approach.

Thus appears the great necessity of prevention, of a more efficient treatment and the developing of new methods for early detection. The first screening trials for lung cancer had negative results. None of the studies had no prove in decreasing of mortality by screening for lung cancer. The lack of sensitivity of thoracic radiographs and sputum cytology was leading the investigators to use the monoclonal antibodies in detecting the neoplastic changes in sputum, the spiral computerized tomography with low dose of radiations, the autofluorescence bronchoscopy and more recent the positron emission tomography, offering the possibility of reducing mortality by early detection in lung cancer.

Data overview Smoking status declared by patients must be objectively validated by biochemical tests to determine biomarkers of tobacco exposure. The main biomarkers utilized by practitionners are: carbon monoxide in expired air and plasma, saliva, urine, hair and intranasal cotinine. More recently, researchers have studied also the role of some new biomarkers: anatabine, anabasine, thyocianate, serum uric acid and nitric oxide in expired air. We present up to date data about advantages and disadvantages of each such biomarker and practical details on clinical use, as some of them are also markers of chronic airway inflammation. Conclusions Laboratory tests for tobacco biomarkers offer the opportunity to measure constituents of tobacco smoke and to show exposing t...

He presented a pneumonia with Pneumocystis carinii during hospitalization. Death was due to a colon perforation with secundary peritonitis. Miliary tuberculous lesions in liver, spleen and colon were revealed at necropsy and cytomegalovirus was identified in necrotic samples also.

Materials and methods: A cross sectional study using anonymous questionnaire was performed in 2017 among 400 university students from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Results: 95.5% of the participants had heard about e-cigarettes and 43.7% of these had tried e-cigarettes during their lifetime, while 8.9% declared using cigarettes in the previous month (one out of five students who had tried them during their lifetime). Half of the students had smoked during their lifetime and one third had smoked in the previous month. Eighty-five percent of participants had experimented alcohol intoxication during their lifetime and 45% had done so in the previous month, while illicit drug use during their lifetime and the previous month was 34% and 9.5%, respectively. The results of the linear regression analyses ...

Our paper aimed to investigate the efficiency and the reliability of a hierarchical pooling approach for large-scale PCR testing for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis. To identify the best conditions for the pooling approach for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis by RT-qPCR, we investigated four manual methods for both RNA extraction and PCR assessment targeting one or more of the RdRp, N, S, and ORF1a genes, by using two PCR devices and an automated flux for SARS-CoV-2 detection. We determined the most efficient and accurate diagnostic assay, taking into account multiple parameters. The optimal pool size calculation included the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2, the assay sensitivity of 95%, an assay specificity of 100%, and a range of pool sizes of 5 to 15 samples. Our investigation revealed that the most efficient and accurate procedure for detecting the SARS-CoV-2 has a detection limit...

The present study investigates the current pharmacological prescribing practices in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) according to the 2017 GOLD guidelines, to determine the level of pulmonologist adherence and to identify possible factors that influence physician adherence. Materials and methods: This retrospective study took place between 1 February and 30 April 2018 in Pneumophtysiology Clinical Hospital Cluj-Napoca. We included 348 stable COPD outpatients classified according to the 2017 GOLD strategy in the ABCD risk groups. Pulmonologist adherence was defined as appropriate if the recommended pharmacological therapy was the first- or alternative-choice drug according to the guidelines, and inappropriate (overtreatment, undertreatment) if it was not in line...
