The stratification and hybridization of cultures, societies, and palimpsests, can be highlighted by visual paths, which offer possible keys of interpretation. The article suggests two visual paths created during a CIVIS Summer School to read the Esquiline neighbourhood in Rome, a crossroads of cultures and transformations. The results allow evaluating critically the visual description of complex urban contexts.
