Feeling and coping with pain in different cultures. In: Essays in Medical Anthropology. The Austrian Ethnomedicla Society after Thirty Years. Eds.: Ruth Kutalek and Armin Prinz. Wiener ethnomedizinische Reihe. Bd 6 Wien (2009) 321 - 328, 2009

The experience of pain depends on the somatic or emotional concept of pain, the family orientated or the individual orientated locus of control, and the educated or cultural influenced coping of pain. A narrow-minded ethnocentristic view can lead towards difficulties in communication and a misjudgement with the treatment of foreign patients.

The research was done in twelve countries among 20 cultures and some of their subcultures by using both qualitative and quantitative methods. While collecting quantitative data the A. employed a standardized approach. He reached his conclusion by means of multidimentional scaling and cluster analysis. The A. presents the results of his research on cognition. He describes the development and questions the cognitive medical anthropology as it was unterstood by him

The items of research were the conceptions of the body and of diseases which were rated by the respondents. Multidimentional scaling reveals the primary dimensions of the cognitive order. Cluster analysis, on the other hand, permits the discovery of cognitive dimensions. A practical guide for collection and evaluation of data from ethnographic field projects is given

The structure of perception of the body within the two researched Europeans groups puts -aside from topographical dimensions of exterior perception: exterior - interior and cranial - caudal- a strong emphasis on interior dimensions of perceptions: effectiveness of the body parts within their autonomous-self-determined motion and the functionality in the dimensions of control-supply. The perception of the body of the European groups shows structures of interior perception that realizes dynamic structures of the body. This is a capacity of the reason and cannot be deduced from a sensory perception of the exterior. The functions of the organs gain in importance. Such a cognitive classificati...

The Cabunguenos experience illnesses mainly through cognitive dimensions of perception. They classify diseases according to topographic dimensions of cognition (exterior-interior) and by the dimensions of time. The duration of a specific illness defines its cause, meaning and prognosis. The same illness is thought to have different origins due to its duration. The longer an illness lasts the more serious it is. The conception of diseases is dynamic. The perception of diseases through time enables this ethnic group to choose their treatments and healers

The structure of body perception and the body feeling of the Kankanaey-Igorots are dependent on exterior dimensions of perception. The classification of parts of the human body employs the dimensions cranial-caudal and interior-exterior. In the drawings done of the human anatomy as well as in their cognitive perception-structures mystical explanations are present. These explanations are not only visible in their cultural values but also in their patterns of perception. The liver is seen as a very special part of the body. The symbolism of the different organs is demonstrated. The methods of how to analyze and interprete the MDS analysis are demonstrated

The structure of body perception and the classification of the body concept among the inhabitants of Cabuntog consist of the three dimesnsions of the spatial perception: cranial - caudal, dorsal - ventral. Classifications regarding interior perception cannot be found. Their idea of the human body in its different parts resembles the fish anatomy

Exterior and interior sensory perceptions are ordered through cognition schemes in such a way that they appear within our perception as objects of the external or internal world and are imagined as conceptions within our thinking. These conceptions are ordered by dimensions of cognition which are identical to the dimensions of perception. The A. describes the dimensions of interior and exterior perception, the cognition of diseases as well as cognition and language. The importance of the contributions for the theory on cognition will be discussed

The thick black lines indicate the present boundaries o f the provinces. In general, the Kankaney Igorot we visited were in good health. Conspicuous were foot deformities with toes curved medially (inward), which I eagerly documented and whose cause I have not found out to this day.
