In this prospective non-randomized study we evaluated the effects of Nd:YAG laser photoresection alone vs. Nd:YAG laser resection in combination with brachytherapy and EBRT on cough, dyspnoea, thoracic pain, haemoptysis, body weight loss, atelectasis, postobstructive pneumonia, endoscopic findings, disease-free period and survival rate in lung cancer patients. Only patients with Karnofsky index (KI) < or =50 were included. Sixty-four patients were divided into 2 groups: group I patients ( = 20) were treated only with Nd: YAG laser, and group II patients (n = 44) were treated with Nd: YAG laser followed by brachytherapy and EBRT. Group I patients showed statistically significant improvement in all investigated parameters but cough. Group II patients achieved significant improvement in a...

Since knowledge is the most powerful tool to combat any disease, the primary goal of our study was to assess patients' knowledge of tuberculosis and its relationship to their socio-demographic status. Methodology: This cross-sectional study included 1,067 respiratory patients who were surveyed between November 2021 and June 2022 at the Institute for Pulmonary Diseases of Vojvodina (Serbia). They completed a questionnaire designed for this study. Results: The majority of patients (53.7%) were female; over two-thirds (70.8%) were ≥ 60 years; every fifth (23.2%) was either with or without primary school; every third (33.3%) was financially poor. Although the majority of patients (97.8%) were aware that tuberculosis is an infectious disease, only 44.2% knew the etiology. Around 3/4 (72.6%) were aware of a tuberculosis vacc...

The main task of a pulmonologist oncologist is to establish a tumor diagnosis and, ideally, to confirm the stage of the disease with the least invasive technique possible. Materials and Methods: The paper will summarize published reviews and original papers, as well as published clinical studies and case reports, which studied the role and compared the methods of invasive pulmonology diagnostics to obtain adequate tumor tissue samples for molecular analysis, thereby determining the most effective molecular treatments. Results: Bronchoscopy is often recommended as the initial diagnostic procedure for LC. If the tumor is endoscopically visible, the biopsy sample is susceptible to molecular testing, the same as tumor tissue samples obtained from surgical resection and mediastinosco...

Research paper thumbnail of The effect of smoking on asthma prevalence and control

Medicinski pregled, 2018

Introduction. Determinants of asthma and its clinical course include the interaction between vari... more Introduction. Determinants of asthma and its clinical course include the interaction between various intrinsic and extrinsic factors, of which exposure to harmful tobacco particles is one of the most important preventable causes of increased morbidity and mortality related to asthma. However, it is surprising that the prevalence of cigarette smoking among patients with asthma is equivalent to prevalence among the general population. Smoking as a Risk Factor for Development of Asthma. Exposure to tobacco smoke stimulates the immune response that can co-occur with asthma, lead to the development of bronchial hyperactivity and chronic inflammation of the respiratory tract, thus favoring the onset of asthma during childhood, as well as adulthood. Asthma Control in Relation to Smoking Habits. Continuous exposure to noxious particles of tobacco smoke, dysfunction of small airways as well as an altered inflammatory response result in irreversible changes. The worsening symptoms and signs of illness can easily remain unnoticed since they develop gradually, so the patients are often unaware of the severity of illness. The Prevalence of Asthma Symptoms Among Smokers. Compared to non-smokers, smokers have more prevalent and severe symptoms at all stages of disease, which is usually related to body weight and overall duration of smoking. Cigarette Smoking as a Risk Factor for Asthma Exacerbation. Current and former smokers are almost twice as likely to have asthma exacerbations and frequent relapses over a short period of time which increases the risk of requiring intensive care treatment The Effect of Smoking on Lung Function. Reduced airway sensitivity to the application of standardized inhalation therapy and the need for additional medications to achieve disease control can lead to irreversible changes and the development of fixed bronchial obstruction.

The purpose of our study was to evaluate clinical findings and sonographic features of abdominal wall endometriosis and also to report its CT and MR appearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A computerized search of our institution's database over a 5-year period was performed, yielding 12 surgically proven cases of abdominal wall endometriosis that were retrospectively studied. All patients had undergone sonography including power Doppler examination. Additional CT was performed in one patient and MRI in four. Pathologic material was preoperatively obtained by sonographically guided puncture in six patients. The clinical data were analyzed, and the imaging studies were reviewed by two radiologists working in consensus. RESULTS. All patients had a history of at least one prior cesarean section. All presented with focal pain near the surgical scar, which was cyclic in three patients. Nine patients presented with a palpable mass near the scar. Sonography detected 11 lesions within the abdominal wall, with a mean diameter of 25 mm. All lesions were hypoechoic, vascular, and solid, with some cystic changes in one. The calculated frequency of abdominal wall endometriosis is approximately 0.8% of all women who had a cesarean delivery. CONCLUSION. Abdominal wall endometriosis frequently presents with noncyclic symptoms. Imaging findings of a solid mass near a cesarean section scar strongly suggest its diagnosis.

The aim of this paper is to present the similarities and differences between these diseases, as well as to describe two cases from our practice. Outlines of cases. The patient with lymphangioleiomyomatosis (43 years old) had pulmonary changes detected during a regular examination within the underlying disease ? tuberous sclerosis. Four years after starting therapy with everolimus, she was still respiratory asymptomatic, a slight radiological deterioration of cystic changes was registered, the diffusion capacity was declining (by 12%). The second patient (23 years old) was admitted due to bilateral radiological lung changes and symptoms in the form of dry cough, quick fatigue, and chest pain. Pathohistological examination of the transbronchial biopsy showed numerous large-core histiocytes, ...

Lung carcinoids are considered a rare and uncommon group of lung tumors, making about 1% of all primary lung tumors. Atypical carcinoids are more aggressive than typical ones, with higher metastatic potential and worse prognosis and a 10-year survival rate of less than 60%. Case outline. In 2012, a 61-year-old male underwent the right lower lobectomy and the histopathological finding was an atypical lung carcinoid tumor. At the beginning of 2016, radiological and bronchoscopic progression of the disease was reported. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed enhanced nodular lesions compatible with liver metastases. The patient received endoluminal brachytherapy. Subsequently, the first line chemotherapy according to the cisplatin/etoposide (PE) protocol was applied. In August 2016, the somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) revealed secondary deposits with somatostatin receptor (SR) expression in the liver and lungs. The treatment with lanreotide injections was initiated....
