Many factors contribute to the salinity problem, consequently affects the plant physiology, growth as well as production. Therefore, this research aims to determine the effects of betaine-rich Nano fertilizer on physiological parameters of sweet corn (Z. mays var. saccharata) and A. thaliana under salt stress. In this study, plants were grown in a controlled plant growth room. Five salinity levels (S0:0 dS/m, S1:2 dS/m, S2:4 dS/m, S3:6 dS/m, and S4:8 dS/m), two concentrations of betaine (B0:0 mM and B1: 50 mM) and the application of Nano fertilizer (N0: without Nano fertilizer and N1: with Nano fertilizer) were tested in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates. Data for chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence (F V /F M), and leaf relative water content (RWC) were recorded. The results were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Duncan posthoc test. Sweet corn and A. thaliana under salt stress showed a significant increase in chlorophyll content and leaf RWC, but not in F V /F M. Therefore, it is anticipated that betaine-rich Nano fertilizer could reduce salt stress by improving the physiological parameters in sweet corn as well as in A. thaliana.

Polypyrrole (PPy) coated saw dust as a novel coagulant was prepared via in-situ polymerization of pyrrole (Py) monomer using FeCl3 oxidant in aqueous medium in which saw dust particles were suspended. The zeta potential of coagulant and C. vulgaris and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis of coagulant were characterized. PPy maintain predominantly positive charge over a wide pH range (2-10) with an isoelectric point 10.4 while, C. vulgaris maintained negative surface charge from pH 5 and onward with isoelectric point 3.8. The microalgae showed the highest separation efficiency at pH 10. The maximal recovery efficiency reached more than 90% for microalgae at a stirring speed of 120 rpm within 7 min. The maximal adsorption capacity of C. vulgaris was 28.8 mg dry biomass/mg-saw dust coated PPy. The concentration factor obtained is higher than 32 which save energy and time associated with microalgal harvesting and allows a reduction in the equipment size necessary for biomass dewatering and improves the feasibility of using these microorganisms in biofuel or wastewater processes.

The antioxidant activity of the essential oil was determined by using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity while the content of total phenol was determined by using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. Aluminium chloride colorimetric method was used for flavonoid content determination while photo-protective potential was determined by using Mansur's sun protection factor (SPF) value. The extracted essential oil was found to contain low levels of total phenolic contents (2.30±0.003µg/g as garlic acid equivalent) and total flavonoid contents (254.99±0.64 µg/g as quercetin equivalent) respectively. DPPH free radical scavenging activity of the essential oil was40.73%±1.32 at 200µg/ml. The Mansur's equation of sun protective factor showed that the essential oil possesses some sun protective potentials. This study suggests that the essential oil from Etlingera elatior could be potentially used as a new source of natural antioxidant and ingredient that can be incorporated into the sunscreen cosmetic products.

This retrospective study investigated the statistical association of these variables from a retrieved registry. Methodology and results: Cross-tabulation using SPSS was used to analyze 1394 cases of confirmed typhoid patients admitted to various hospitals in Kelantan state over a six-year period. Fourteen age groups with a five-year range interval were generated. There was a significant association between typhoid infection and sex of subjects, whereby females were generally more susceptible than males. Ethnicity and district of typhoid patients did not show significant association. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: The observation of an increased number of typhoid cases with a male predominance in the age group 5-14 and female predominance in the 20-60 age group calls for improved hygiene, continued public health education, together with better laboratory diagnostics to identify carriers, are some measures to control this disease.

Two plots of 0.1 ha were established at the inland forest and coastal forest of the island. As the result, a total of 387 trees ≥ 5 diameters at breast height (DBH) were recorded. The coastal forest recorded 167 individuals representing 48 species from 37 genera and 26 families while the inland forest had 220 individuals representing 50 species from 43 genera and 25 families. Shorea glauca (Dipterocarpaceae) was the most important species at the coastal forest with a Species Importance Value Index (SIV i) of 10.5 % while Dipterocarpus costulatus (Dipterocarpaceae) was the most important species at the inland forest with 13.8 %. Dipterocarpaceae was the most important family in both forest plots with FIV i at 20.4 % in the coastal and 21.5 % in the inland forest. The Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index (H') was considered high in both forest plots with 3.4 (H' max = 3.9) at the coastal forest and 3.5 (H' max = 4.0) at the inland forest. Sorenson's Community Similarity Coefficient (CCs) showed that tree species communities between the two forest plots had moderate similarity with CC = 0.5. The Shannon Evenness Index (J') in the two forest plots was 0.89. The total above ground biomass at the coastal forest was 491 t/ha and at the inland forest it was 408 t/ha. From all the species recorded in this study, 11 species were listed as threatened species by IUCN Red Data Book, of which four were listed as endangered and critically endangered, six were listed as lower risk and one species was listed as vulnerable.

(Cypripedioideae: Orchidaceae) was in a state of taxonomic chaos for almost a century after the name was first established by Linnaeus. The beauty and scarcity of the plants has encouraged many taxonomists and botanists to investigate the relationships within Cypripedium. However, the studies often conflicted with each other and contributed towards difficulty in identification. In this study, a molecular phylogenetic analysis has been conducted on the two plastid DNA (rbcL and matK) and the nuclear DNA (ITS) in order to test the monophyly and intrageneric relationships in Cypripedium. The plastid data was combined with the nuclear ITS to further resolve the relationships among 38 investigated taxa of Cypripedium. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses indicated that the genus is monophyletic and C. irapeanum is sister to the rest of Cypripedium taxa. The phylogenetic results presented provide reliable information of intrageneric relationships in Cypripedium to be applied for future conservation studies. The present study confirmed the distinctiveness of all Endangered (C.

Germplasm in Terengganu and Phylogenetic Relationships of Dioscorea spp. using Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS). ABSTRACT Dioscorea hispida Dennst. is a source of carbohydrates and is also important for medicinal purposes. However, the distributions and phylogenetic relationships of D. hispida were not-well documented in the state of Terengganu. D. hispida germplasms were collected from the seven districts of Terengganu between the months of April 2012 to June 2012. During the samplings and survey, a few of the ecological parameters were measured such as the intensity of light, humidity and temperature as well as chlorophyll content. The locations of the distribution of D. hispida were mapped using the DIVA-GIS software. Subsamples of seven accessions were used for DNA fingerprinting. In phylogenetic analysis, these D. hispida germplasms were subjected to PCR amplification using DNA barcode such as internal transcribed spacer (ITS). The...
