Research has shown that working with others makes students retain more information than if working individually, and at the same time promotes critical thinking. Students learn best when they are actively involved in the process and this results in a more satisfaction towards the class. To guarantee interesting and fun classes, teachers should prepare activities in which students are responsible for each other's learning as well as their own. The Centro de Estudios en Inglés Conversacional (CEIC) from the Universidad Nacional in Costa Rica promotes collaborative learning in its conversational classes due to its efficiency and success. Classes in this institute focus on students communicating the language through different activities such as role plays, dialogues, games, debates, presentations, information-gap activities and so on. This methodology really helps learning because by having fun, students need to use the language in real-life situations and in a spontaneous way. The following are some of the characteristics of the CEIC program: Outreach program Part of School of Literature and Language Sciences Initiation (beginning 90's) Levels (Intro A/B 1-10) Number of students (900) Number of teachers (30) Growth (70% last 10 years) Need for the language (job requirement, personal need)

The attitudes of academic coordinators, teachers and students of different Costa Rican language schools offering Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, and Italian classes were examined. These insights were gathered through questionnaires completed by 272 people at Intercultura, Centro Panamericano de Idiomas, INTENSA, Instituto San Joaquin de Flores, Alianza Francesa, Dante Alighieri and the Fundacion de Cultura, Difusion y Estudios Brasilenos. In these institutes there was a variety of teachers: native, non-native. However, not all of them hold the necessary degrees or certifications to be language teachers. In general, the native speaker fallacy notion exists in these schools’ populations because most coordinators, teachers and students still believe the ideal language teacher is a native speaker of that language. Therefore, it becomes necessary to create awareness reg...

It describes the Think, Share, Act (TSA) project whose main objective is to raise social awareness in students by providing them with opportunities to get involved in social projects of their interest. The TSA was created by professors Chaves, Solano and Villalobos in the Language School at Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica, during the first term of 2009. Based on Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy and the principles of Holistic Education, this paper illustrates how the learners were encouraged and guided to do research and fieldwork with the purpose of taking action in society. Likewise, it explains how the TSA project generated an innovative methodology to accomplish students’ transformation into social reformers. In this regard, this research shows that learners can definitely develop language skills while becoming critical citizens.

In order to achieve this main goal, the teaching-learning process should incorporate principles from the Humanistic, Constructivist and Holistic approaches which stress the importance of designing learning experiences. As research states, learning should be a process of comfort, pleasure and motivation for students to become independent and successful life-oriented learners.

It was derived from the experience of the instructors in the Training Program for English Teachers in Elementary School (PROCAPRI, in Spanish), an outreach program of the Universidad Nacional. This approach sets a challenge for teaching and learning that stimulates practitioners to exert an extra effort, triggers development of creative skills for successful achievement of different kinds of knowledge, raises nonverbal communication skills to the relevant position that the other language skills hold, and fosters implementation of implicit and explicit techniques to suit individuals' multiple cognitive processes.
