OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the perception and image of the nursing profession among nurses working in surgical units. METHODS: This cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted with 216 nurses using the random sampling method between 10 and 30 March, 2022. The study data were collected using an information form, the Perception of Nursing Professional Scale (PNPS), and the Scale for the Image of the Nursing Profession. RESULTS: The nurses' mean age was 32.53 ± 9.16 years (min 21, max 57) and their mean professional experience was 16.44 ± 9.80 years (min 1, max 44). The mean PNPS score was 73.12 ± 9.46, and the mean Scale for the Image of the Nursing Profession score was 171.11 ± 11.16. Female nurses had significantly higher positive perceptions of nursing levels than male nurses. Gender, having a history of COVID-19, marginalization during the pandemic, and perception of the nursing profession significantly affected image perceptions of nursing at multiple linear regression analysis. These variables explained 43% of the total variance. CONCLUSION: Nurses working in surgical units during the COVID-19 pandemic exhibited a good level of professionalism and image perception concerning nursing.

There is no definitive criterion in autism, but there are some important indicators to facilitate early diagnosis. This research was carried out to determine the awareness of female students about autism, to determine the lack of knowledge of women about autism and to determine the factors affecting it. Turkey's Eastern Black Sea Region Gumushane, Trabzon, Rize, Artvin, Giresun, including the Eastern Black Sea which are thought to represent the best of the Region 5 provinces that agree to participate in research studying at university in 2604 has reached female students. The average age of the students is 20.81 ± 2.79. It was determined that 72.5% of the students had information about autism, 28.9% of the respondents had information about internet autism from internet, 24% from written skies, 23.3% from formal education process, and 13.4% from television. In our study, it was found that 67.5% of the students stated that the mother was exposed to radiation and / or toxic agents during pregnancy, 66.3% said genetic factors, and 57.8% stated that the mother used drugs as a cause of autism. It is recommended that community-based awareness programs and other media platforms such as radio, print and social media be encouraged in order to increase mass awareness on autism. It is recommended that autism researches should be conducted in large samples by increasing the number of awareness campaigns on autism and strategic plans on autism should be made in line with the results.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chewing gum on dry mouth, interdialytic weight gain, and intradialytic symptoms in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: This prospective randomized controlled single-blind study was conducted with patients who had been treated for at least 6 months with sessions 3 days a week for 4 hours at two HD units. Patients were randomly allocated to chewing gum group or the control group. In the chewing gum group, gum was chewed for 10 minutes six times a day, and when the patients felt mouth dryness or were thirsty. In the nonchewing gum group, gum was not chewed. The patients were followed-up for 3 months. A total of three saliva samples were taken before starting treatment at the first, 12th, and 36th HD session. Data were collected with the "Visual Analogue Scale (VAS)," "Hemodialysis Patients Fluid Control Scale," "Dialysis Symptom Index," and "Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale" at baseline, week 4, week 8, and week 12. Findings: The study was completed with a total of 44 patients consisting of 22 patients in the each group. The second and third month VAS values (xerostomia) of the patients in the chewing gum groups were statistically significantly lower than those in the control group (P = 0.014, P < 0.001, respectively). The third month salivary flow rate in the chewing gum group was higher than the values in the control group patients (P < 0.001). Discussion: It is anticipated that this study will raise nurses' awareness of dry mouth and encourage future studies on interventions to increase the salivary flow rate to prevent or treat dry mouth.

Methods: The sample of this cross-sectional and correlational type of study consisted of 618 nurses calculated with the snowball sampling method. The data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researchers, the state anxiety inventory, and the trait anger and anger expression scale and was conducted between May 10 and 20, 2020 using an online questionnaire form. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to evaluate the data. Results: The mean age of nurses was 34.98 ± 8.36 years (min: 20; max: 53), 87.4% were women, and 81.7% experienced a high level of anxiety. The anger scores of the participants were found to be 20.04 ± 4.43, the anger-in score was 15.55 ± 3.34, the anger-out score was 14.01 ± 2.87, and the anger control score was 22.93 ± 3.6. Being married, the presence of chronic disease, living in the Marmara region, working shifts, presence of an individual over 65 years of age at home, and having a COVID-19 test were found to be risk factors that significantly increase nurses' anxieties. A significant positive relationship was found between the anxiety scores, trait anger (r = 0.249, p = 0.000), anger-in (r = 0.174, p = 0.000) and anger-out (r = 0.205, p = 0.000) scores of nurses, and a significant negative relationship was found between the anxiety scores and anger control (r = 0.249, p = 0.000) score. Conclusion: The study revealed that in the COVID-19 pandemic the anxiety levels of the nurses were high and that the high anxiety level negatively affected the style of anger expression, but the nurses were successful in maintaining anger control. In line with these results, it is important that nurses develop effective coping strategies to reduce their anxiety levels and that they receive increased levels of support in managing anger expression.

Gereç ve Yöntem: Araştırmada nitel araştırma yaklaşımlarından durum çalışması deseninden yararlanılmıştır. Durum çalışması, bir olguyu, bir durumu derinlemesine inceleyen bir araştırma yöntemidir. Çalışma grubunu 26 hemşirelik son sınıf öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Veri toplama aracı olarak; bağımsız kelime ilişkilendirme testi ve yazdırma–çizdirme tekniği kullanılarak, katılımcıların “psikolojik şiddet” kavramıyla ilgili bilişsel yapılarında ayrıntılı veri toplanması hedeflenmiştir. Çizimler ise öğrencilerin mevcut bilgilerini, inançlarını kelimelere bağlı kalmaksızın ifade etmesini sağlar. Elde edilen veriler içerik analizine göre değerlendirilerek kategoriler belirlenmiştir. Bulgular: Elde edilen bulgulara göre hemşirelik adaylarının psikolojik şiddet i...

Yarı deneysel ön test on test kontrol gruplu çalışmanın evrenini bir devlet üniversitesinde öğrenim gören Psikiyatri Hemşireliği dersini alan 104 öğrenci oluşturmuştur.

A cross-sectional research conducted in East Black Sea Region of Turkey was held in June-December 2019 in three hospitals in the area. 101 operating room nurses participating in the study constituted the sample of the study. Personal Information Form, Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and Communication Skills Scale-Adult Form (IAS-SF) were collected. SPSS 23 package program was used in the analysis of the data. The average age of the nurses in the study is 35.73 ± 7.35 and 73.3% are women. It was determined that 84.2% of the nurses had not heard of alexithymia before and 69.3% did not receive training on communication skills. It was found that the nurses were moderately alexithymic and there was a negative correlation between their alexithymia scores and communication skills scores (r:-0.48, p = 0.04). The relevant conclusion was reached to increase the awareness of operating room nurses with unknown alexithymia and to complete their communication skills. By organizing trainings on these issues, it can be ensured that the communication of nurses with patients and team members is maintained effectively.
