Araştırmada Sosyal Bilgiler 6 ve 7. sınıf öğretim programında yer alan coğrafi kavramların (Bölge... more Araştırmada Sosyal Bilgiler 6 ve 7. sınıf öğretim programında yer alan coğrafi kavramların (Bölge, coğrafi konum, çevre, harita, ölçek, turizm, iklim, doğal kaynaklar, nüfus, göç, afet ve yön) sekizinci sınıf öğrencileri tarafından nasıl algılandığının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, öğrencilerin her bir coğrafi kavrama ilişkin geliştirdikleri metaforlar, çizdikleri resim veya karikatür ve o kavrama ait öğrencilerle gerçekleştirilen yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler incelenmiştir. Nitel araştırma deseninde tarama modelinde gerçekleştirilmiş olan araştırmada, üçgenleme (metot üçgenlemesi) şeklinde veri toplamaya uygun olarak ifade edilen nitel araştırma teknikleri (mecazlar yoluyla veri toplama, yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme ve doküman analizi) birlikte kullanılmıştır. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using cartoons in teaching environmental ... more The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using cartoons in teaching environmental problems in "Bridges between Countries Unit" existing in Social Studies Course for 7th grades on student academic success. Working group of the study consisted of 13 students of 7th grade, who were in experimental group, from Mehmetcik Primary School in Mamak, Ankara and 19 students of 7th grade for control group. A 20-item multiple-choice test was used to gather data. The data was analyzed by SPSS package program. Results indicated that the use of cartoons in teaching environmental problems increased students' academic success.

Silivri, a district within the borders of Istanbul, is an open area against the natural disasters... more Silivri, a district within the borders of Istanbul, is an open area against the natural disasters such as earthquake and flood. The district is located on the second and the third seismic belts. In consequence of the flood which occurred in 2009, many dwellings were damaged and this flood disaster caused many losses of lives. The housings, within the floodplains, increased between the years of 1980-1990. In this process, there is almost no free space between Highway D-100 and the Sea of Marmara. Concordantly, Silivri was imprisoned within this narrow space in this period. When we look at the 2000s, we see dense housings in the floodplains of Boğluca Stream. In this period, the first of the two big flood disasters has happened in consequence of overflowing of Tuzla and Boğluca streams in 2007. The second one has happened in 2009 and caused financial losses as well as losses of lives. In this study, the risk analysis of the occurring overflows and the risk of changing into natural disasters of these overflows taken place in the district will be investigated while the risk analysis belonging to the overflows occurring in the district is carried out by benefiting from the methods and the techniques of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). In the scope of the study, the aim is to determine the extents of the overflow risks and the areas-at-risk in the district, to identify the places which may be affected most by an overflow within those areas that are under the risk and correspondingly, to reveal which measures might be taken against these disasters. In accordance with this study, the maps regarding overflow risks are formed by benefiting from physical maps, slope, aspect, and the principle of superposition. As a result of the examinations that has been made, it is determined that Tuzla and Boğluca streams have affected the housings in the area between the Sea of Marmara and Highway D-100 in consequence of the sudden overflows. These streams have to be reformed and closed for zoning of the areas which are not suitable for settlement. In this context, it is necessary to do the required planning.

The study seeks to explore prospective teachers' reasons for choosing teaching as a professio... more The study seeks to explore prospective teachers' reasons for choosing teaching as a profession. A total of 439 students studying in Gazi University Gazi Faculty of Education, Department of Elementary Education in 2010-2011 academic year participated in the study. Results revealed that prospective teachers' perceptions on reasons for choosing teaching as a profession varied significantly depending on their having a teacher relative, the department they are studying in, and department's order of preference in University Entrance Exam. Research findings gave rise to the need for further research to examine the reasons of prospective teachers for choosing teaching as a profession.

The study group consisted of 242 sixth grade students from 6 different public schools located in the central district of Karabuk Province in the spring semester of the 2012-2013 academic year. The research data were collected via the forms prepared by the researcher containing the statement, “Weather event… is like… This isbecause; …” and the pictures/cartoons which the students were asked to draw in regard to the concept of “Weather Event”. The qualitative research method and the phenomenological design were employed in the study. The data were analyzed through content analysis. Results revealed that the students produced 34 metaphors in regard to the concept of weather event. These metaphors were divided into 5 different categories. The purpose of the present study was to examine the problems that prospective geography teachers ... more The purpose of the present study was to examine the problems that prospective geography teachers encounter during teacher practice lessons and their solution suggestions to these problems. This study was designed in descriptive survey model. A total of 140 prospective teachers from all final-year geography students studying in Karabuk University Faculty of Letters Department of Geography and also studying in pedagogical formation program participated in the study. Results revealed that the most encountered problems during teaching practice sessions were transportation to schools, the high number of prospective teachers in practice schools, limited facilities of practice schools, and the lack of supervision. Some of the solution suggestions for these problems were providing collaboration between university and practice schools, choosing practice schools that were close to the places in which prospective teachers dwell, increasing the frequency of supervision and the number of practic...
