Objective: This was done with a view to providing baseline information that will help in the creation of awareness of occupational hazards among cleaners. Methodology: This is a descriptive study that was carried out among 230 cleaners working in a University in South Western Nigeria. Results: The results showed that knowledge about job hazards is exceedingly high among the sampled cleaners. Part of the explanations for this is that most of them had received formal training for the job. Interestingly, having received such training is the only factor that is significantly associated with the level of awareness among the cleaners. Contrary to what one might expect, the older, more experienced or more educated cleaners were not necessarily more knowledgeable about job hazards. Quasi-experimental design with repeated measures was used and it was conducted among 228 adolescents in three public high schools in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The adolescents were grouped into: Control Group; Nurse Facilitated Group; and Nurse-Police Facilitated Group. Rape Discourse Education (RaDE) was conducted for the Nurse Facilitated Group and the Nurse-Police Facilitated Group and data collection was in four waves. Findings showed significant effect on rape myths acceptance (ηp2 = 0.12) more than on other outcome variables and the effect was observed up to a six-month follow-up. Implication for rape prevention education in the school setting is documented.

We also examined the challenges faced by the nurses in the course of communication. The study setting was five private high schools located in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Participants were 10 school nurses and 420 school adolescent girls. Cross-sectional descriptive design was employed using quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Results showed school nurses paid more attention to physical body changes, menarche, and menstrual hygiene as contents of pubertal communication rather than contraception, prevention of sexually transmitted infection, and teenage pregnancy prevention. Materials for communication were reportedly lacking in many of the schools while the school management censors pubertal information. Efforts should be tailored at equipping the school clinic with audiovisual aids and school nurses should be encouraged to give comprehensive pubertal education irrespective of their values and beliefs.

Statistical Analysis Used: Frequency, mean, independent sample t-test, and Pearson’s moment correlation were use for statistical analyses. Results: Among 252 grinders and nongrinders who participated in the study, eye complaints such as foreign body in the eye (59.5% vs 29.0%) and headache (57.9% vs 37.3%) were more prevalent among grinders compared to nongrinders. More grinders had severe eye complaints (12.7% vs 3.2%). Mean eye complaints among the grinders were 6.92 ± 4.83 compared to 3.76 ± 4.37 among nongrinders. Dry-yam grinders exposed to yam powder had significantly more eye complaints and longer duration of complaints (P = 0.01). There was a weak positive linear correlation (0.167) between the duration of exposure to yam powder and severity of eye complaints. Grinders were observed to have a significantly lower VA on both the eyes (P = 0.01). Conclusion: Dry-yam grinders have more eye complaints than nongrinders. Conclusion: This study concludes that the level of knowledge of job hazards among the cleaners is high. Notwithstanding, efforts are still necessary, particularly from public health nurses, for this level of awareness to be sustained.
