Academics at higher institutions are expected to conduct research critical to effective teaching,... more Academics at higher institutions are expected to conduct research critical to effective teaching, knowledge production, and community development. However, in Africa, research seems to be more motivated by promotion than by problem-solving initiatives. This has left a gap in effective teaching at the higher education level since most academics appear to be more interested in research than teaching, as their career advancement depends on the former. According to evidence, research motivated by promotion contributes far less to effective learning and critical understanding than research-driven by problem-solving initiatives. This disparity appears to be impeding African universities' ability to contribute successfully to the global knowledge economy. Despite this, Africa's university system is affected by a lack of funding, administrative bottlenecks, outdated teaching techniques, and a lack of research capabilities. To address these problems and produce knowledge critical to Africa's future, most African institutions, including those in South Africa, have developed several research entities, scholarships, fellowships, and training programs. These platforms allow academics to conduct research, teach and engage in community service to address social issues and provide value to students. Although these programs are commendable, their contributions to effective teaching and critical knowledge in Africa raise concerns, which have received little attention. The article investigates how research stimulates effective learning and knowledge critical to Africa’s development, using David Easton's theoretical input-output nexus, structural-functionalism and qualitative research design drawn from expert opinions interviews. The findings deepen understanding of the extent of contributions of research to effective teaching and critical knowledge. The results also provide approaches for university lecturers to improve research uptake, quality teaching, and critical knowledge. It concludes that a balance between research and teaching would rapidly enhance Africa’s knowledge production for its development.

Numbers of studies have argued in favour of Christianity, Islam and other dominant cultures, which have informed most developing communities’ ethics. This chapter identified factors responsible for the erosion of ethical and childrearing values in African and proffered paths of building on the values and cultures towards rejuvenating general ethics within the continent. Secondary sources of data and content analysis were adopted. It recommended among other prevailing variables that the African families and communities should make use of science positively, in order to invent her lost cultures and values, which will constitute the African Ethics and norms for childrearing.

It notes that owing to the weakness of the Nigerian state and the lack of political will to address the underlying causes of the insurgency in the country, armed insurgents have taken control of many of the country’s extractive processes. This results in massive resource theft and creates an allure for the spread of theatres of insurgency across the country. This has partly been responsible for Nigeria’s abysmal oil production per day and earnings from oil, despite the country's increased production quota by OPEC due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Dwelling on the frustration-aggression and relative deprivation theories, the paper concludes that ungoverned artisanal resource extraction remains a source of insecurity in Nigeria and recommends, among others, that the Nigerian state should develop the political will to address insurgency and its drivers in the country.

It argues that Nigeria as a British colonial creation is essentially a capitalist system that was invertedly created because unlike Western systems, it is a capitalist system that is run by non-capitalists. This implies that in Nigeria, there is a palpable absence of the state which is a creation of capitalists to coordinate other superstructures. This then explains why the political class in Nigeria comprises of fractious groups that are too preoccupied with politics and material survival and as such do not have hegemony. The import of absence of the state and dearth of hegemony in Nigeria is that environmental politics is uncoordinated with cases of Niger Delta and farmers-herdsmen crises demonstrating this reality. The paper concludes hegemony-induced environmental governance can ensure nationalistic values which would treat environmental and related issues with the urgency they deserve.

Growing scientific exactitude on causes and effects of climate change makes humanity’s response to it an urgent and critical need. Nigeria like many countries around the world is facing difficult times owing to the new environmental realities produced by the menace. Responding to climate change requires humanity’s best social, political, scientific, and technological efforts. To achieve this, this paper notes that digitalization can be a veritable climate change response tool in Nigeria. Dwelling on Schumpeter’s theory of innovation and the political economy approach, the paper argues that digitalization holds positives for Nigeria’s hitherto unimpressive climate change response but may not be practicable due to the social, economic and political contradictions that are producing unfavourable outcomes within the Nigerian state. This situation explains why mitigation and adaption efforts have not produced sa...
