Research paper thumbnail of Assessment of Vehicular Traffic Congestion in Yenagoa, Nigeria

The aim of this paper is to assess vehicular traffic congestion in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeri... more The aim of this paper is to assess vehicular traffic congestion in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Traffic congestion is akin to major cities of developed and developing countries, the bane of urban life. The gravity model provided the theoretical foundation for this study, while a survey design involving volumetric count of vehicles and administration of questionnaire to 400 road users along major roads in Yenagoa was also used. The immediate causes of vehicular traffic congestion along major roads and conflict points in Yenagoa are: poor state of the roads, road side trading/market, inadequate public mass transit vehicles, road capacity, and poor traffic signalization. Generally, the effects of vehicular traffic congestion on road users include road traffic crashes and accidents, exposure of commuters and pedestrians to ambient pollutants with attendant health implications, parking problems, effects on aesthetics of buildings and the environment and encouragement of street trading. The result of the regression model revealed that the extracted components explained 0.614 (61.4%) of influence on vehicular traffic congestion in Yenagoa at 0.05 significance level. This study recommends an efficient transport planning system, the pull and push measures of traffic management such as introduction of mass transit and encouragement of off-street parking at affordable price. 1.0 Introduction Urban traffic congestion can be attributed to many factors such as rapid urban population increase, economic growth, increase in numbers of cars and numbers of persons using cars, low capacity of transport infrastructure, road layout, under investment in road infrastructure, poor traffic management, inadequate provision for on-street parking, signal and equipment failure, nonadherence to traffic regulations, poor urban planning, rapid expansion of city boundaries, poor public transport system, increased use of private cars, car accidents, special event gathering, road works and bad weather (Institute of Transport Engineers, 1989

Research paper thumbnail of Transportation Infrastructure for Regional and National Development: Case of the Proposed East-West Coastal Road

American Journal of Medical Case Reports, Apr 9, 2021

Transport is the cornerstone of civilization, an essential part of human activity. Road transport... more Transport is the cornerstone of civilization, an essential part of human activity. Road transportation in particular plays a significant role in the economic development of any nation, for high proportion of economic activities are dependent on an efficient network of roads. The Nigerian Coastal zone sprawls over a total of nine coastal states and stretch inland for a distance of 15km in Lagos in the West to about 150km in the Niger Delta and about 25km east of the Niger Delta. Coastal Roads constitute a major segment of national road network in countries with vast shorelines like Nigeria. The East-West Road undergoing reconstruction and upgrading is currently the most southern road running through the Region. It is about 40km from the coastline on the average, leaving a vast section of the coastal communities inaccessible by road transport and has naturally slowed down development and business expansion. The conception and proposal to construct an East-West Coastal Highway is thus a welcome development. The 704km highway with about 106km of spurs connects over 1,000 communities and serves as a strong east-west spine from Calabar towards Lagos, with several north-south ‘ribs’ connecting growth poles. The paper contributes to an understanding of the human environment of proposed project from a specialist perspective on impacts’ assessment study. Beneficiaries, prevailing baseline conditions and recognition of associated positive benefits including regional-national integration if implemented are discussed. High expectations await the coastal road execution and Government and her agencies should not tarry too long in doing the needful.

Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, Nigeria has continued to witness an unprecedented increase... more Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, Nigeria has continued to witness an unprecedented increase in both population and economic activities since 1996 when it became the State capital and headquarters of Yenagoa LGA. The effects of population growth on demand for housing land in the study area was investigated with study objectives including understanding the population growth characteristics; housing need/demand and supply; demand for housing land, effects of increased population on land consumption; prediction of future pattern of land consumption and recommending appropriate theoretical model(s) of urban development. The study utilized an exploratory, descriptive survey method: 430 households from 17 communities within 5-10km radius of Yenagoa urban were sampled. Empirical findings confirmed an increasing population of the Yenagoa urban area over the years: >80,000 in 1996, 130,000 in 2006 and >211,000 in 2016. By 2026, the population should have grown to >343,000 using a medium growth variant of projection. There is also a strong correlation between increasing households and demand for separate units of accommodation. The availability of enough buildable land to accommodate the growing population was theoretically, confirmed to be affirmative although several development constraints seem to negate the possibility. The continued concentration of development of all types in the Yenagoa capital city may after all not be the best urban development pattern. The adoption of the growth pole strategy, establishment of 'new and satellite towns' and provision of serviced lands are recommended as sustainable urban development strategies that could ease the population growth challenge.

Research paper thumbnail of Assessing and Providing Water for Small Communities in the Niger-Delta, Nigeria -A Water Supply Situational Study in Kpite-Tai in Ogoniland, Rivers State

American Journal of Water Resources, 2020

A Development Needs Assessment study carried out in Ogoniland found availability of social infras... more A Development Needs Assessment study carried out in Ogoniland found availability of social infrastructures, including those of potable drinking water inadequate; barely a quarter sources water from functional community boreholes. The source of water for majority of the resident population are varied but susceptible to contamination; shallow hand-dug wells, ponds, isolated freshwater streams with few private boreholes. The Kpite-Tai community, one of several communities in Ogoniland exemplifies this lack and dependence on irregular source of water. A detailed development-driven study geared towards providing a sustainable water project for the population, using a group of communities was commissioned. The study mandate included among others: determining reliable estimate of community's population, the population density of the area, availability and access to potable water infrastructure (source(s), accessibility, distance to water source, the quantity used by households, for what purposes/uses, and most recent water intervention in community and from which agency/organization). Both the qualitative and quantitative socioeconomic data collection approaches were utilized involving rapid appraisal methodologies. The paper presents some aspects of the results of the study.
