Play based learning has both developmental and educational benefits. Many children exhibit increased learning difficulties, inability to solve simple problems associated with socialization and control of emotions, many cases of truancy, and aggressive behavior, compounded with total lack of interest towards learning and as a result the study sought to investigate factors influencing instructional practices on play-based activities in Preschool Curriculum Implementation in Homabay County. The study was guided by social constructivism theory lev vygosky (1934) employed concurrent triangulation research design. The study targeted 1257 Pre-school teachers, 908 key informants (lead teachers) and 8 Sub-county directors. The sample size for both pre-school teachers and lead teachers was 297 and 48 respectively. Though television has been used to play a monumental role in promotion of education and entertainment, children with full exposure to television have been found to perform poorly in class and fail to speak languages fluently. Public confidence in it is in question as many stakeholders have expressed concern about the amount of television and the type of programming to which children are being exposed to. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of television on academic performance and languages acquisition of pre-school children in Tiriki East Division, Hamisi Sub-County, Vihiga County, Kenya. The study involved 40 teachers and 132 parents drawn from 20 pre-schools selected by simple random technique. It employed descriptive survey design and an ex-post facto research design. Data was collected by questionnaires. The study found out that; ...

Play-based teaching and learning promotes positive social skills in children. Today many children are not given time to play and teachers do not integrate play fully in curriculum because many teachers seem not to recognize the relevance of play to children, leading to poor performance of children yet the entire teaching and learning of small children is supposed to be entirely based on play. The study was therefore meant to establish the relevance of play activities integrated in Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) curriculum. The study was based on Descriptive survey design. It involved; 430 teachers drawn from 215 pre-schools (33% of the study population) and 1 Sub-County Program Officer, selected using Simple random sampling and Saturated sampling techniques respectively. Data was collected by a questionnaire, an interview schedule and a lesson observation schedule. The study found out that: Most teachers i...
The use of integration as a pedagogical tool in the teaching of English language and literature s... more The use of integration as a pedagogical tool in the teaching of English language and literature subjects is a priority in Kenya. Despite the inception of the integrated English curriculum two decades ago, not all English language teachers use it as conceived by the curriculum developer, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). The Purpose of this study was to explore pedagogical experiences of teachers in implementing the integrated English language curriculum in Kenya, Kisumu County. Guided by Fuller’s Concern Based Adoption Model (CBAM) theoretical framework, this study utilized Concurrent Triangulation design under a mixed methods approach to establish the level of coverage on components of both language and literature and to determine the integration methods used by teachers of both language and literature in implementing the integrated curriculum. Saturated sampling design was used to select 110 subject teachers, 52 heads of departments and 52 principals currently impl...

The Concurrent Triangulation Design was employed. The sample size comprised 184 respondents who were, 122 lower primary teachers, 47 ECDE teachers and 15 primary school Head teachers. Both Questionnaire and Interviews were used to collect data. The researcher ensured validity of questionnaires through expert judgment that is with the help of lectures from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology. Moreover, the items in the questionnaire were made clearer and also arranged from simple to complex.Reliability of the instrument was tested using internal consistency and a reliability coefficient of 0.892 was reported. The quantitative data obtained from questionnaires was analysed by using descriptive statistics with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.Qualitative data was analysed using the thematic framework. The study finding was that that intellectual development of ECDE learners was effectively assessed by written tests method of assessment. However, on the aspect of emotional development, most participants reported that written tests methods of assessment does not effectively assess emotional development of ECDE learners. Moreover, this study confirms that written tests methods of assessment did not effectively assess the social development of ECDE learners. Finally, most participants disagreed that physical growth andspiritual developments of ECDE learners is assessed well when they are given written tests. The study recommendation is that The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development should come up with clear policies on assessment of ECDE learners so that holistic development is guaranteed during the assessment process.

The theory resulted from attitude research using the Expectancy Value Models. Even though this theory can be applied in studying a number of research cases in Information Systems discourse, it has not been extensively used, and in cases where it has been used, it has mainly set the stage for other theories such as Technology Acceptance Model, Unified Theory of Acceptance and Utilization of Technology and Innovation Diffusion Theory among others. This has there positioned Theory of Reasoned Action as underutilized even though it is a very strong theory to support Information Systems studies.

Lamk), groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) and aimed at collecting information on the incidence of millipede damage, Failure of sweet potato cuttings to establish caused by biotic stress varied from 4 to 33%, A significant but variable proportion of that biotic stress was caused by millipedes, Millipedes of the species Omopyge sudanica were responsible for the loss of up to 84% of the sweet potato cuttings if the crop was planted early in the first rainy season, During bulking hardly any damage was inflicted on the storage roots, When the tubers were stored 'in-ground on plants' during the dry season, millipedes in combination with other insect pests affected up to 86% of the tubers at the onset of the rains of the following growing season, Data on groundnut and maize were taken on plots where in the previous season sweet potato had been grown, Early in the first rainy season, O. sudanica also caused damage in germinating groundnut, causing plant losses of 12-29%. Maturing groundnut seeds were affected for 39%. Millipede damage in germinating maize seeds in the first and second rainy seasons amounted to 34% and 29%, respectively. The species O. sudanica, Spirostreptus ibanda and Tibiomus spp. efr. ambitus were found in the vicinity of the maize seeds but were only found feeding on them during the second rainy season. More research is needed to quantitatively assess economic damage to crop production caused by millipedes.
