We present the Virtual Network Engineering Laboratory, which creates a high-fidelity, multi-platf... more We present the Virtual Network Engineering Laboratory, which creates a high-fidelity, multi-platform, remotely accessible environment where students obtain hands-on experience in network engineering and operation and in cyber defense and infrastructure protection. The facility focuses on access to real equipment in a realistic yet isolated setting. isolation allows for a broad variety of activities without danger to the surrounding operational networks, and it allows the students to learn from mistakes on equipment that is both real and well protected. The Laboratory supports fine-grained, detailed instrumentation of user activities and allows for experiments on a wide variety of real networking equipment. Real equipment is emphasized over simulation for the sake of (a) fidelity of both intended and non-intended modes of operation, (b) extendability to other protection domains such as cyber physical systems, and (c) instrumentability of student-system interactions to support run-tim...

Es allí donde surge la ética como creación de valor, en razón de la transparencia de las conductas empresariales que benefician a toda la comunidad y a la empresa misma, además de evitar las consecuencias jurídico-legales que conllevarían su no práctica.

Los laboratorios han sido utilizados como un mecanismo de apropiacion del conocimiento, un puente... more Los laboratorios han sido utilizados como un mecanismo de apropiacion del conocimiento, un puente entre la teoria y la practica real. Con el tiempo estos han adquirido mayor relevancia, debido a que el mercado exige de los futuros ingenieros una formacion mas acorde a las necesidades propias del sector y con menor tiempo de adaptacion a los retos del entorno laboral. La facultad de Ingenieria Aeronautica de la Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana centra su modelo pedagogico en la metodologia CDIO (Concebir – Disenar – Implementar – Operar). La cual permite una mejor apropiacion del conocimiento ya que estimula la interaccion con un entorno real, que permite corroborar las teorias y conceptos adquiridos durante el recorrer de los cursos. El comite del curriculo de la facultad realizo un estudio sobre la importancia de los laboratorios y proyectos finales de cursos en el fortalecimiento de los conceptos y el aprendizaje. El objetivo principal era definir la percepcion del estamento discente de la facultad, sobre la efectividad de estas estrategias metodologicas en su proceso de aprendizaje. En este analisis se compararon la percepcion de los estudiantes que estaban en fase practica profesional, con aquellos en tomaron cursos academicos que se encontraban en transicion entre una formacion netamente teorica y una combinacion teorico-practica. Se encontro como resultado una percepcion favorable y una mejora considerable en el aprovechamiento de los cursos por parte de los estudiantes. Esto conllevo a alteraciones en la malla curricular del programa, elaboradas dentro de un proceso de transformacion que esta siendo implementada en la actualidad. El punto central ha sido disenar cursos teorico practicos, que permiten al estudiante contrastar sus analisis numericos, con analisis experimentales; bajo condiciones controladas y en algunos casos reales como practicas de vuelo en aeronaves de instruccion.

Sperm whales are present in the Canary Islands year-round, suggesting that the archipelago is an ... more Sperm whales are present in the Canary Islands year-round, suggesting that the archipelago is an important area for this species in the North Atlantic. However, the area experiences one of the highest reported rates of sperm whale ship-strike in the world. Here we investigate if the number of sperm whales found in the archipelago can sustain the current rate of ship-strike mortality. The results of this study may also have implications for offshore areas where concentrations of sperm whales may coincide with high densities of ship traffic, but where ship-strikes may be undocumented. The absolute abundance of sperm whales in an area of 52933 km2, covering the territorial waters of the Canary Islands, was estimated from 2668 km of acoustic line-transect survey using Distance sampling analysis. Data on sperm whale diving and acoustic behaviour, obtained from bio-logging, were used to calculate g(0) = 0.92, this is less than one because of occasional extended periods when whales do not ...

La artrosis es una enfermedad degenerativa, de caracter no inflamatoria, que afecta a las articul... more La artrosis es una enfermedad degenerativa, de caracter no inflamatoria, que afecta a las articulaciones, incluyendo la articulacion temporomandibular (ATM). Se caracteriza por la destruccion del cartilago articular, seguida de su posterior remodelacion. Este proceso de destruccion/remodelacion se produce de manera anormal, generando procesos de neoformacion. La incidencia de la artrosis de la ATM aumenta con la edad y su prevalencia abarca un rango del 22 al 38% en una poblacion de entre 20 y 90 anos. Esta enfermedad puede causar dolor y disfuncion osea.

HTTP adaptive streaming has become the dominant solution for broadband streaming delivery. Essent... more HTTP adaptive streaming has become the dominant solution for broadband streaming delivery. Essentially, the server delivers small chunks of content in response to queries from a player, that can alternate between different qualities of content depending on its rendering capabilities and the network condition. In this paper, we highlight that the frequent switches of this popular delivery mechanism are deemed to interfere with the payload modulation of bit-stream video watermarking systems. We then propose a generic strategy to cope with such transmission and showcase its efficiency in practice with a watermarking system that operates directly in the H.264/AVC CABAC bit-stream. Eventually, we evaluate the robustness of the proposed solution against standard attacks.

Bibliographic digital libraries play a significant role in conducting research and, in the past f... more Bibliographic digital libraries play a significant role in conducting research and, in the past few years, have started to move from closed to more open social platforms. However, in this, they have faced challenges (e.g., from Web spam) in maintaining the level of scholarly precision-the ratio of relevant citations retrieved by search. This paper describes a hybrid approach that uses online social collaboration and reputation based social moderation to reduce the cost and to speed up the construction of scholarly bibliographies that are comprehensive, have better quality citations and higher precision. We implemented selected social features for an established digital humanities project (the Cervantes Project) and compared the results with a number of closed and open current bibliographies. We found this can help in building scholarly bibliographies and significantly improve precision outcomes.

Current progresses in home automation and service robotic environment have highlighted the need t... more Current progresses in home automation and service robotic environment have highlighted the need to develop interoperability mechanisms that allow a standard communication between the two systems. During the development of the DHCompliant protocol, the problem of locating mobile devices in an indoor environment has been investigated. The communication of the device with the location service has been carried out to study the time delay that web services offer in front of the sockets. The importance of obtaining data from real-time location systems portends that a basic tool for interoperability, such as web services, can be ineffective in this scenario because of the delays added in the invocation of services. This paper is focused on introducing a web service to resolve a coordinates request without any significant delay in comparison with the sockets.
