This 3D polymer is a promising adsorbent for large-scale application, since it is a low-cost material made from agricultural waste and showed exceptional performance. The synthesis of the network polymer involved the carboxymethylation of OISW and curing of the carboxymethylated OISW at an elevated temperature to promote the formation of ester linkages between OISW’s components. FT-IR, atomic force microscopy, and thermal analysis were performed on the crosslinked product. The adsorption efficiency of the crosslinked carboxymethylated OISW toward Pb(II), Cu(II), and other toxic metal ions present in sewage was evaluated as a function of adsorbent dose, temperature, pH, time, and initial metal ion. The percentage removal of about 20 metal ions present in a sewage sample collected from a sewer p...

In the current investigation, we developed new cellulose acetic acid derivation/zeolite fiber as an effective technique to eliminate erythromycin (ERY) from wastewater. The number of interchangeable sites in the adsorbent structures and the ratio of ERY to the three adsorbents were identified as the main reasons for the reduction in adsorption as the initial ERY concentrations increased. Additionally, for all adsorbents, the pseudo–second-order modeling showed better fitting for the adsorption than the pseudo–first-order modeling. However, the findings obtained in the pseudo–first-order model were still enough for explaining the sorption kinetics of ERY, showing that the surface displayed all chemisorption and physi-sorption adsorption processes by both adsorbents. TheR2for the second order was very close to 1 for the three adsorbents in the case of pseudo–second-...

Olive industry solid waste (OISW) is a by-product generated in the process of olive oil extractio... more Olive industry solid waste (OISW) is a by-product generated in the process of olive oil extraction. It is a lignocellulosic material consisting of cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin and other extractives. In this work, a process for hydrolyzing the OISW into its monomers glucose, the precursor of bioethanol was developed. The hydrolysis process involves two stages: in the first stage the OISW was activated by treating it with a material that opened the cellulose structure and made it more accessible for chemical reagents. Several activating materials were evaluated among them are water, NaOH, Ca(OH)₂ and acetic acid. In the second stage, the OISW was subjected to an enzymatic treatment which hydrolyzed it into sugar. A combination of the two enzymes cellulase (endo-1,4-β-glucanase) and β-glucosidase was used in the hydrolysis. Best hydrolysis results were obtained at enzymes dose of 15.0 mg of cellulase and 20.0 mg/g of β-glucosidase per one gram of OISW at 45 o C and a pH of 4.8. A yield of 85.02% sugar was obtained from the hydrolysis of 10% NaOH pre-treated OISW under a positive pressure of air. Whereas, hydrolysis of cellulose extracted from OISW by the Kraft pulping process and bleached using DEHP beaching sequence produced about 95.30% sugar.

In this study we demonstrated that curcumin with heterocyclic moiety can function as an anticancer agent in a human. A new series of curcumin-based benzodiazepines, diazepines and diazoles were prepared using a simple one pot process. The process involved a condensation reaction of curcumin with various 1,2 diamino compounds and hydrazine. The structures of the prepared heterocycles were identified by the spectroscopic methods FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The in vitro anticancer activities of the synthesized curcumin-based heterocycles against HeLa cancer cells were evaluated by the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The viability of HeLa cells was reduced in the range of 4.48- 14.57% within the studied concentrations. Curcumin-based diazepine 6 showed the highest cytotoxic effect on the HeLa cells at all concentrations. it reduced the via...

This occurs at a temperature known as thermal gelation point. Polymer precipitation causes a significant drop in the shear viscosity. This could be a disadvantage in a hot environment or in applications were heat is applied. In this work, a hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) was formed that undergoes thermal gelation with no polymer precipitation and with enhanced rheological properties. The target HPMC was prepared from wood pulp with a low content of carboxymethyl groups. The produced hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (CMHPMC) derivative showed unique physical properties that are not achievable with typical hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. The thermal gelation temperature of an aqueous solution of CMHPMC was increased from 55 °C for commercial HPMC to 85 °C for CMHPMC. A substitution level of carboxymethylation that...

The epoxy monomers were triglycidyl-2-aminophenol, triglycidyl-2-aminothiophenol, tetraglycidyl-1,2-phenylenediamine and tetraglycidyl-4-methyl-1,2-phenylenediamine. The characterization of the epoxy monomers was carried out by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Rheological properties of solutions of the epoxy monomers in ethanol were evaluated using an advanced rheometer. The effect of solution concentration and temperature on the viscosity of the epoxy solution was evaluated. The shear rheology study at various temperatures of the epoxy resins solutions in ethanol was carried out on solutions with concentrations ranges form 0.5 to 5 wt% and temperatures (20–70 °C). The results revealed that the tetra-functional epoxy resins behave as Newtonian liquids and its viscosity is independent on the shear rate. However, the solutions of tri-functional epoxy resins ar...
