By exploring the cases of two famous comic series, one South Korean and the other Japanese – Nambul and Zipang – this essay delves into the triadic structure of non-western colonialism, which has affected popular memory, interpretation, and the representation of colonial history in Korean and Japanese societies. Both the series are alike in that they deal with imaginary war stories, (re)construct alternative history, and present nationalist revisions of historical experiences. Moreover, their view of colonial history involves mourning and melancholia, specific response and reaction toward loss. Their melancholic despair and the mourning practices of the imaginary revision of history in both Nambul and Zipang lead us to focus on the triadic structure of non-western colonialism in Northeast Asia. By introducing the idea of a triadic colonial structure forged between Japan, Korea, and the West, this essay highlights and explain the differences in the sentiments of postcolonial representation.

First, we reveal an uneasy, uncomfortable, and antagonistically complicit relationship between colonial culture, anticolonial culture, and postcolonial state culture. We show that, despite the widely held view that Ilminchuŭi, the official state policy of the Syngman Rhee regime, was a fascist ideology, it was in fact developed from anticolonial ethnic discourses in Korea. In addition, despite its alleged “nationalist democracy,” Ilminchuŭi resembled Japan’s statism. This raises the important question of how it was possible for postcolonial state culture to resemble both a colonial culture and an anticolonial culture. Thus, second, we explain this relationship through the concept of homology. Through its defensive and confrontational engagement with the colonial culture, the anticolonial culture came to share epistemological frames with the colonial culture. This relationship was homological in that the two cultures shared the same origin but had different qualities. We show that, in the context of the change in the regional hegemon from Japan to the United States during the postcolonial era, Ilminchuŭi was born as an unwelcomed synthesis of both.

I n part, this article is an attempt to apply Gouldner's own lessons about the sociology of knowledge to his own work, situating it with respcct to the dominant epistemological unconscious of late 1960s American sociology as well as thc broader historical context of a still-vibrant Fordist inode of societalization. Gouldncr's critique of positivism was limited because he was still partially caught up within the dominant epistemological framework in American sociology at that time, a formation we call mcthodological positivism. With thirty years of hindsight, it is not surprising that contcmporary readers interestcd in following up Gouldner's call for a reflexivc sociology of knowledgc will find certain aspccts of his own program unsatisfactory. We propose an altcrnativc sociology of knowledge based on a more explicit philosophy of scientific understanding. namely, contemporary critical realism. We also trace the vicissitudes of the trope of a "crisis in sociology" which Gouldner unleashed into the world and unpack the tensions between the "western" sociology referred to in the book's title and Gouldner's actual focus on the LJnited States.
