O Óxido de cromo estava na forma de filmes ordenados crescidos epitaxialmente sobre um cristal de Pd(111) enquanto que o SrTiO3 consistia de cristal dopado com Nb cortado segundo a face (100). A detailed investigation concerning the atomic structure of Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>... more A detailed investigation concerning the atomic structure of Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and Pd/Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> ultrathin films deposited on a Ag(111) single crystal is presented. The films were prepared by MBE (molecular beam epitaxy) and characterized <i>in situ</i> by LEED (low energy electron diffraction), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and XPD (X-ray photoelectron diffraction). Evidences of rotated domains and an oxygen-terminated Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>/Ag(111) surface were observed, along with significant contractions of the oxide’s outermost interlayer distances. The deposition of Pd atoms on the Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> surface formed a four-monolayer film, <i>fcc</i> packed and oriented in the [111] direction, which presented changes in monolayer spacing and lateral atomic distance compared to the expected values for bulk Pd. Apresentamos uma proposta simplificada de determinação da Unidade Astronômica (UA) através de dad... more Apresentamos uma proposta simplificada de determinação da Unidade Astronômica (UA) através de dados experimentais obtidos pelo registro do trânsito de Mercúrio em frente ao Sol, de fácil desenvolvimento junto a estudantes da última fase da educação básica. O registro do trânsito foi realizado durante uma sessão de observação astronômica realizada em uma escola brasileira e, também, em cooperação com uma instituição internacional. Esta atividade mostrou que, apesar da pouca distância entre os dois locais de observação, em relação ao planeta Terra, o registro do trânsito de Mercúrio de 2019 permitiu determinar o valor da UA com uma boa aproximação. Os trânsitos de planetas possuem importância didático-pedagógica, podendo ser utilizados por educadores na educação formal como elemento motivador. A atividade permite conhecer e aplicar dados experimentais, desenvolver conhecimentos como construções geométricas, trigonometria, razões e proporções, as Leis de Kepler do movimento planetário,...

Recent works suggest that the surface chemistry, in particular, the presence of oxygen vacancies ... more Recent works suggest that the surface chemistry, in particular, the presence of oxygen vacancies can affect the polarization in a ferroelectric material. This should, in turn, influence the domain ordering driven by the need to screen the depolarizing field. Here we show using density functional theory that the presence of oxygen vacancies at the surface of BaTiO3 (001) preferentially stabilizes an inward pointing, P-, polarization. Mirror electron microscopy measurements of the domain ordering confirm the theoretical results.

There is still limited knowledge how the properties of these materials are influenced by different chemical routes. In this work, we investigated the effect of heat treatment over cytotoxicity of cobalt and niquel ferrites NPs synthesized by sol-gel method. Then the samples were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Analysis (FTIR), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The average crystallite sizes of the particles were found to be in the range of 20–35 nm. The hemocompatibility (erythrocytes and leukocytes) was checked. Cytotoxicity results were similar to those of the control test sample, therefore suggesting hemocompatibility of the tested materials.

The temperature-dependent ferroelectric properties of super-tetragonal mathrmBiFeO3{\mathrm{BiFeO}}_{3}mathrmBiFeO3 are... more The temperature-dependent ferroelectric properties of super-tetragonal mathrmBiFeO3{\mathrm{BiFeO}}_{3}mathrmBiFeO3 are investigated using surface-sensitive low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM). We use epitaxial oxide mathrmBiFeO3/mathrmCa0.96mathrmCe0.04mathrmMnO3{\mathrm{BiFeO}}_{3}/{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.96}{\mathrm{Ce}}_{0.04}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{3}mathrmBiFeO3/mathrmCa0.96mathrmCe0.04mathrmMnO3 bilayers grown by pulsed laser deposition on mathrmYAlO3{\mathrm{YAlO}}_{3}mathrmYAlO3 substrates. Ferroelectric, micrometer-scale domains are written by piezoresponse force microscopy and subsequently observed by LEEM from room temperature up to about 950 K. Kelvin probe force microscopy and LEEM spectroscopy reveal that the surface potential is efficiently (g50%) screened by adsorbates that are only released after annealing above 873 ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi 50 K in ultrahigh vacuum. Nesse trabalho nos propomos a estudar a estrutura eletronica e geometrica de ligas de superficie ... more Nesse trabalho nos propomos a estudar a estrutura eletronica e geometrica de ligas de superficie a partir de filmes ultra finos, da ordem de monocamada atomica , crescidos por MBE sobre substratos monocristalinos. Os filmes finos foram crescidos in situ e analizados por XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), PED (Photoelectron Diffraction), LEED (Low Energy Electron Diffraction) e UPS (Ultra Violet Photoelectron Spectroscopy). As ligas de superficie estudas foram InPd, SnPd e SbPd sempre sobre um substrato de Pd(111). Os resultados das medidas PED dos sistemas InPd e SnPd foram interpretadas usando programas tipo MSCD[1]. Foi mostrado que Sn e In em baixa cobertura formam uma estrutura (raiz2 3 x raiz2 3) R 30o ( e o In mostrou uma estrutura (1x1) para filmes com mais de 2 monocamadas, provavelmente na forma de ilhas sobre a superficie do Pd. We present a simplified proposal to determine the Astronomical Unit (AU) through the experimental... more We present a simplified proposal to determine the Astronomical Unit (AU) through the experimental data obtained from astronomical observation of the transit of Mercury. The data were obtained by the observation activity carried out in a Brazilian school and in cooperation with an international institution. This activity showed that despite the short distance between the two observation sites in relation to planet Earth, the 2019 Mercury transit record made it possible determine the value of the AU with a good approximation. The transits of planets in orbit closer to the Sun have a certain didactic-pedagogical importance. The activity allows knowing and applying experimental data, developing knowledge such as geometric constructions, trigonometry, ratios and proportions, Kepler’s laws, geographic coordinates and geolocation, concepts that demonstrate that the activity allows interdisciplinarity with students.
Until now, the quasiamorphous (QA) phase in BaTiO 3 (BTO), SrTiO 3 (STO), and BaZrO 3 was achieve... more Until now, the quasiamorphous (QA) phase in BaTiO 3 (BTO), SrTiO 3 (STO), and BaZrO 3 was achieved by pulling a thick film through a steep temperature gradient. Here, we show that a room-temperature deposited ultrathin film, subsequently annealed in O 2 can also produce a QA phase. The atomic, electronic, and ferroelectric (FE) structure of a QA, ultrathin BTO grown on STO were studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and piezoforce microscopy (PFM). The absence of long-range order is confirmed by in-and out-of-plane XRD as well as Ti 2p XPD. FE polarized domains with good retention have been successfully written into the QA film and exhibit a clear P-E hysteresis loop. Substrate clamping frustrates volume expansion during annealing leading to a QA film. Photoelectron spectroscopy confirms a similar overall electronic structure as for thicker films but with some significant differences. Simple chargetransfer arguments are not sufficient to explain the high-resolution core-level spectra. Ba, Ti, and O all show components associated with a surface region. We suggest that the observation of such a component in the Ti 2p spectrum is linked with the high dynamic charge tensor induced by the large off-center displacement of the Ti ion.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have a wide range of applications in various areas. For health application, c... more Nanoparticles (NPs) have a wide range of applications in various areas. For health application, cytotoxicity tests are used to ensure its efficiency and safety. In this paper, ZnFe2O4, CoFe2O4, Zn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 NPs were synthesized, characterized and their antibacterial properties were evaluated. The Sol-Gel method was used to synthesize the NPs. Their electronic and crystallographic structures were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Analysis (FTIR), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). To perform the antibacterial evaluation, ferrites were dispersed through nanoemulsion to prevent the crystals from accumulating together. Then the evaluation was performed through microdilution in a 96-well plate and diffusion in agar disc in contact with 3 different strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The purpose of this study was to establish the biochemical parameters of the abaxial wall, dorsal... more The purpose of this study was to establish the biochemical parameters of the abaxial wall, dorsal wall and sole of the hoof of the medial thoracic, lateral, and medial pelvic digits of buffalos. The hoof samples were subjected to destructive biochemical analyses to identify the dry material (DM), mineral matter (MM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE) contents. Sulfur (S), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels were determined based on nondestructive biochemical analyses. The parameters of dry material, mineral matter, organic matter, crude protein and ether extract of hoof capsule of the digits of buffalos can be determined by means of both destructive and nondestructive biochemical analysis. In addition, this study revealed that the highest concentrations of DM, CP and minerals such as, K, Zn and Cu are concentrated in the digits that bear the greatest body mass weight, suggesting that there is a positive correlati...

We have studied the surface structure of single-crystal, wide-gap semiconductor β-Ga 2 O 3 (010) ... more We have studied the surface structure of single-crystal, wide-gap semiconductor β-Ga 2 O 3 (010) using x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS measurements show typical spectra for stoichiometric Ga 2 O 3 (010). Annealing in vacuum produced a sharp (1 × 1) LEED pattern, characteristic of the monoclinic structure. The XPD angular anisotropies were collected for the Ga 2p 3/2 and O 1s core levels. Surface interlayer relaxation up to 8% of the bulk interplanar distance and 0.11-0.14 Å rumpling are observed at the β-Ga 2 O 3 (010) surface. At the surface, the oxygen atoms shift toward the vacuum with respect to the gallium atoms. The rumpling decreases to zero and and the interplanar distance reaches the bulk value of 1.52 Å by the sixth atomic layer. The surface structure agrees with that predicted by first-principles density functional theory calculations which, in addition, suggest a significant band gap narrowing of ≈ 1 eV in the surface layer, due to surface states spatially localized on surface oxygen atoms of O II type.

CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) represent promising candidates for biomedical application... more CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) represent promising candidates for biomedical applications. However, in these systems, the knowledge over how various physical and chemical parameters influence their cytotoxicity remains limited. In this article, we investigated the effect of different calcination temperatures over cytotoxicity of CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 NPs, which were synthesized by a sol-gel proteic approach, toward L929 mouse fibroblastic cells. More specifically, we evaluated and compared CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 NPs presenting low crystallinity (that were calcined at 400 and 250 °C, respectively) with their highly crystalline counterparts (that were calcined at 800 °C). We found that the increase in the calcination temperature led to the reduction in the concentration of surface defect sites and/or more Co or Ni atoms located at preferential crystalline sites in both cases. Nesse trabalho nos propomos a estudar a estrutura eletronica e geometrica de ligas de superficie ... more Nesse trabalho nos propomos a estudar a estrutura eletronica e geometrica de ligas de superficie a partir de filmes ultra finos, da ordem de monocamada atomica , crescidos por MBE sobre substratos monocristalinos. Os filmes finos foram crescidos in situ e analizados por XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), PED (Photoelectron Diffraction), LEED (Low Energy Electron Diffraction) e UPS (Ultra Violet Photoelectron Spectroscopy). As ligas de superficie estudas foram InPd, SnPd e SbPd sempre sobre um substrato de Pd(111). Os resultados das medidas PED dos sistemas InPd e SnPd foram interpretadas usando programas tipo MSCD[1]. Foi mostrado que Sn e In em baixa cobertura formam uma estrutura (raiz2 3 x raiz2 3) R 30o ( e o In mostrou uma estrutura (1x1) para filmes com mais de 2 monocamadas, provavelmente na forma de ilhas sobre a superficie do Pd. We present a simplified proposal to determine the Astronomical Unit (AU) through the experimental... more We present a simplified proposal to determine the Astronomical Unit (AU) through the experimental data obtained from astronomical observation of the transit of Mercury. The data were obtained by the observation activity carried out in a Brazilian school and in cooperation with an international institution. This activity showed that despite the short distance between the two observation sites in relation to planet Earth, the 2019 Mercury transit record made it possible determine the value of the AU with a good approximation. The transits of planets in orbit closer to the Sun have a certain didactic-pedagogical importance. The activity allows knowing and applying experimental data, developing knowledge such as geometric constructions, trigonometry, ratios and proportions, Kepler’s laws, geographic coordinates and geolocation, concepts that demonstrate that the activity allows interdisciplinarity with students.
Until now, the quasiamorphous (QA) phase in BaTiO 3 (BTO), SrTiO 3 (STO), and BaZrO 3 was achieve... more Until now, the quasiamorphous (QA) phase in BaTiO 3 (BTO), SrTiO 3 (STO), and BaZrO 3 was achieved by pulling a thick film through a steep temperature gradient. Here, we show that a room-temperature deposited ultrathin film, subsequently annealed in O 2 can also produce a QA phase. The atomic, electronic, and ferroelectric (FE) structure of a QA, ultrathin BTO grown on STO were studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and piezoforce microscopy (PFM). The absence of long-range order is confirmed by in-and out-of-plane XRD as well as Ti 2p XPD. FE polarized domains with good retention have been successfully written into the QA film and exhibit a clear P-E hysteresis loop. Substrate clamping frustrates volume expansion during annealing leading to a QA film. Photoelectron spectroscopy confirms a similar overall electronic structure as for thicker films but with some significant differences. Simple chargetransfer arguments are not sufficient to explain the high-resolution core-level spectra. Ba, Ti, and O all show components associated with a surface region. We suggest that the observation of such a component in the Ti 2p spectrum is linked with the high dynamic charge tensor induced by the large off-center displacement of the Ti ion.

For health application, cytotoxicity tests are used to ensure its efficiency and safety. In this paper, ZnFe2O4, CoFe2O4, Zn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 NPs were synthesized, characterized and their antibacterial properties were evaluated. The Sol-Gel method was used to synthesize the NPs. Their electronic and crystallographic structures were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Analysis (FTIR), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). To perform the antibacterial evaluation, ferrites were dispersed through nanoemulsion to prevent the crystals from accumulating together. Then the evaluation was performed through microdilution in a 96-well plate and diffusion in agar disc in contact with 3 different strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The purpose of this study was to establish the biochemical parameters of the abaxial wall, dorsal... more The purpose of this study was to establish the biochemical parameters of the abaxial wall, dorsal wall and sole of the hoof of the medial thoracic, lateral, and medial pelvic digits of buffalos. The hoof samples were subjected to destructive biochemical analyses to identify the dry material (DM), mineral matter (MM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE) contents. Sulfur (S), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels were determined based on nondestructive biochemical analyses. The parameters of dry material, mineral matter, organic matter, crude protein and ether extract of hoof capsule of the digits of buffalos can be determined by means of both destructive and nondestructive biochemical analysis. In addition, this study revealed that the highest concentrations of DM, CP and minerals such as, K, Zn and Cu are concentrated in the digits that bear the greatest body mass weight, suggesting that there is a positive correlati...

We have studied the surface structure of single-crystal, wide-gap semiconductor β-Ga 2 O 3 (010) ... more We have studied the surface structure of single-crystal, wide-gap semiconductor β-Ga 2 O 3 (010) using x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS measurements show typical spectra for stoichiometric Ga 2 O 3 (010). Annealing in vacuum produced a sharp (1 × 1) LEED pattern, characteristic of the monoclinic structure. The XPD angular anisotropies were collected for the Ga 2p 3/2 and O 1s core levels. Surface interlayer relaxation up to 8% of the bulk interplanar distance and 0.11-0.14 Å rumpling are observed at the β-Ga 2 O 3 (010) surface. At the surface, the oxygen atoms shift toward the vacuum with respect to the gallium atoms. The rumpling decreases to zero and and the interplanar distance reaches the bulk value of 1.52 Å by the sixth atomic layer. The surface structure agrees with that predicted by first-principles density functional theory calculations which, in addition, suggest a significant band gap narrowing of ≈ 1 eV in the surface layer, due to surface states spatially localized on surface oxygen atoms of O II type.

CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) represent promising candidates for biomedical application... more CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) represent promising candidates for biomedical applications. However, in these systems, the knowledge over how various physical and chemical parameters influence their cytotoxicity remains limited. In this article, we investigated the effect of different calcination temperatures over cytotoxicity of CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 NPs, which were synthesized by a sol-gel proteic approach, toward L929 mouse fibroblastic cells. More specifically, we evaluated and compared CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 NPs presenting low crystallinity (that were calcined at 400 and 250 °C, respectively) with their highly crystalline counterparts (that were calcined at 800 °C). We found that the increase in the calcination temperature led to the reduction in the concentration of surface defect sites and/or more Co or Ni atoms located at preferential crystalline sites in both cases.
