The article focuses on the set’s second song, [GA1] titled “Serenade,” seeking to investigate the structural conditions that afford its hermeneutic association with this context. To do so, it borrows its critical apparatus from Mikhail Bakhtin’s literary theory, and particularly the notions of heteroglossia and dialogism, intersected with the concept of markedness, as it has been appropriated to musicology from structural linguistics by Robert Hatten. The analysis demonstrates the song’s heteroglot disposition, evinced by the stylistic opposition of its two comprising sections, the first unmarked and the second marked by readily identifiable tokens of Russianness. In particular, it concentrates on the song’s tonal duality, re-conceptu...

Apart from, but not contrary to his belief in the inherently abstract nature of music, Adamis considers the symbolic qualification of his music’s semantic content commensurate with the historical or cultural distance from the shared frame of reference that defines its symbolic dimension. In terms of compositional practice, the abstract inherence of Adamis’s music is allowed to emerge not through the deployment of automated procedures upon semantically sanitized musical material but through an attempt to incorporate material and procedures from his Byzantine and Greek traditional musical inheritance. The structural means effectuating this attempt pertains primarily to the centonization of idiomatic melodic formulas...

However, given the non-linearity and multi-directionality of the actual creative praxis, the relation between these two roles as heuristic categories need not be considered so much oppositional, as dialectical. Investigating the cognitive mechanisms involved in the ongoing creative process within the context of this dialectical relationship can help us gain some insight into both perspectives, while eschewing the elusiveness of their precise demarcation. The case study presented in this article constitutes such an attempt. By adopting a CBT approach, it offers an interpretation of the creative thinking behind the 2001 short film Copy Shop, informed by ...

The role of family, friends/peers and music teachers is examined, as well as those aspects of personality, which are related with career choices and professional development. Data analysis of 20 semi-structured interviews led to the following conclusions: regarding the environmental factors, family, friends/peers and teachers seem to bear in an ongoing and multifaceted way upon facilitating or complicating the process of professional decision-making. The role of personality appears more crucial in the development towards a music career. An interesting corollary of the study is the conspicuous absence of career guidance and counseling services from external supporting influences. A planned and systematic provision for professional career guidance and counseling is recommended, as a means to offer a firm and informed support to graduate music students of both secondary and higher education in Greece.
